HUGE Yellow Sapphire

The RI for lab created sapphire is the same as for natural, so unless it measures 1.76 to 1.78 , we can be certain it is not either a natural or lab created sapphire.

There are indicators that this is not a sapphire:-

1. The size - whilst not unknown, it would be highly unusual to find an untreated (or even a treated) yellow sapphire in this size.
2. The lack of inclusions - you can see that it's eye clean in the photos - that in itself is a fairly strong indicator that this is either a different gemstone or synthetic.
3. The colour and the fact that it's very even, no zoning or other variant.

Citrines can be found in very large sizes and are not terribly expensive. My guess is that this is Citrine.

In your photo labelled sapstamp2, you can clearly see the stamp on the bale says 14kt so I think it's fairly safe to say that this is a gold setting.

Thanks! Citrine seems to be the consensus. When I go in to get my e-ring cleaned and checked I'll ask my jeweler (an AGS certified gemologist) to do an ID on the stone. Also, not to be rude, but if I could have clearly seen the stamp, I probably wouldn't have asked other people what it said.

Sorry - I didn't mean to be condescending about the stamp. To be honest, I couldn't read it for ages but then suddenly it became clear but I'd stared at it for ages before realising what it was! You can't work it out in one of your photos but the other is much clearer. I find it's far easier to see in a photo than real life. My hubby bought me an antique bracelet for last Christmas and I just couldn't read the stamp at all. I took photos of it and it was much easier to see and eventually I worked it out, so you're definitely not alone!

So, IS it a citrine?

That's okay! I would expect eyes to have better acuity than a camera, but for whatever reason it really is much easier to read in a photo...though I still think I'd have trouble without help.

I'm going to the jeweler Saturday to see about maybe sizing my ering, so I'm going to drop the big yellow thing off and see what he says. He has a gemological lab and does gemstone id's there, but he probably won't be in himself on saturday so I'll know next week for sure. My dad says he thinks he remember my grandma saying the stone was from latin america, so I think that tips the scales even further in the direction of citrine, and definitely not sapphire. Even though it's not valuable, it's still very pretty and it was my grandma's. The only thing I'm hoping it's not is a synthetic sapphire, but I don't think that's likely the case.

I like how savvy we all are around here - this is the perfect name for it and we all know what stone you're talking about!

I agree that the camera has better magnification that our eyes. I have to loupe my ring to read the hallmark but the camera picks it up easily.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of your wisdom. Finally got it to the AGS gemologist at my Jeweler and found out it is, indeed, a citrine. It may not be a sapphire, but at least it's not glass!

Fewf. Now that that's settled...its a lovely stone and looks very nice on you!

Enjoy it. It's still a natural stone, albeit heated, but that's common for almost all citrines.
