Hi Everyone:

So my ears are healing, left slower than right. ARgh!! My original plan was to save up for a matching stud to the 1.1 carat I already have. This would take till end of 2014. (Poor DH has had about all he can take!) But...of course, I see 1.5 ctw huggies at a great price (preloved) and I wonder if I should "try" to get those now. I've gone through the threads on the huggies. Big thanks to diamondseeker who did the size comparison thread on .65, 1.0, 1.5 sizes.

PROs
1. I can see myself wearing a huggie style earring daily, but of course I might be wrong cause I really won't know until I actually have them. If I love them, maybe I can put off my stud purchase for a couple of years. I can see myself buying these at some point, because I do see them as a classic staple.

2. Price is really good. I've read some threads from 2011, and the prices have sure gone up since then. For the price, I could barely get 1 ctw now. Thus these are more affordable right now, although DH might still have a cow. No, FOR SURE he will.

3. Bling factor - Huggies seem to have impact. I've read posts from people who have bought the 1.5 (diamondseeker) and have been happy with the blinginess and size.

4. I get to wear these right away, after I'm healed up.

Potential CONS - Can those who own both help me with these practical questions?

1. What do you wear more, huggies or studs? Did you think you would wear huggies a lot, buy them, and discover you didn't really like them (or vice versa)? Why or why not?

2. Does IDJ have an upgrade policy? If I buy preloved, I assume I cannot apply that upgrade policy to the earrings I bought. Does anyone know, or should I just call them?

3. Keeping in mind that I love blinginess, do you think I will get DSS on 1.5 ctw, or be ok with it in the long haul? I have read some people loving the 2.0 ctw, and maybe I sit tight and buy 2.0 ctw directly from IDJ and then I can still upgrade. Mind you, for a week I have had a pair of CZ studs, about 1.25 ct (each) in size, and they already are NOT "big" in my eyes. They seemed huge when I put them in a week ago, but now, not at all. Unless I put my hair up, you don't see it. And when I do, I'm like, "eh..." They look proportional to me, but I get NO impact. I'm already thinking I want to end up at 3 ctw, after all is said and done. Which makes me think I should instead put the money into a smaller pair of studs now, and work on upgrading those over time. (Honestly, I think I am afflicted with DSS to the extreme. Argh!! I think I have it pretty bad compared to some people.)

4. Non-returnable. What if I find that they are too heavy for me? Or if it turns out I am allergic to white gold? My freaking left ear is not healing too well. I am waiting for the H2Ocean that I ordered (thanks Distracts!!) and hope that this will clear it up.

5. I will be going to a gem show at the end of the month. Maybe I will score some really good deals there. Wait?? (Prices are really reasonable there, but you don't necessarily get BGD or WF level of cut, I assume.)

I think I'm leaning toward wait. I'm probably just tempted by the price, and b/c I'm on ebay trolling for Marco Bicego gold earrings (thanks to another poster who reminded me that I like his stuff...) LOL!!

I tried huggies, they looked ridiculous on me.
My piercings are angled slightly differently, so my huggies sat at different angles.
I had to return them and go for studs.

Huggies are a great an classic staple, but for me... Nothing beats a pair of studs.
If I read your words well down the line you actually prefer studs and you would buy the studs if you had the funds to buy either the studs or the huggies?
Sooooo... I would wait. Also, it can take a while before your ears are completely healed, so I would not experiment with different earrings but continue to wear the existing set instead.

Don't let anything distract you down the way until you have the funds to buy your studs. In the long run, it will make you happier.

OP,

If your heart is set on studs, then I would advise saving the money and wait.

DK :))

I have both. Huggies around 1.2ctw, studs 2ctw. I wear the huggies much more - they just go with any outfit whereas the studds don't seem to match the super casual look. Also, the studds unfortunately look half of what they really are in my big lobes.

So perhaps you can also consider which compliments your lifestyle and look more.

My vote is studs.. I owned both and just sold my huggies (they were 1.81). I just found that my I felt more comfortable in my studs for any occasion.. be it jeans and a t-shirt or all dressed up with no place to go! I think studs are classic and huggies are great it you already have studs as an option... IMO... only....

You can upgrade studs but not huggies. So I'd pick studs. Some huggies fit weird on ears, or maybe it's some ears don't wear huggies well, as in you can't see the huggies head on but slightly sideways. My description is poor but you should go try on huggies to see if you like them on your ears.

HI:

Take the money you would have spent on the huggies and buy a pair of small upgradable diamond studs. Then when you have enough saved to buy the "matching" stone, trade the pair in for one.

Or for that matter, save every cent toward the one, get a great pair of CZ's and CZ huggies.

I have had both studs and huggies (sold both). But the huggies were bought as a second purchase, not first. I agree with others that studs are more classic and versatile.

Honestly, it comes down to preference. But if you are going to have this pair of earrings forever (and perhaps pass down), then save all your $$ for that purpose/long term goal.

cheers--Sharon

Agree w/ the others that upgradable studs should be 1st on your list! :))

I bought my j-hoops before my studs and wear them a lot! Like studs, they're definitely a staple good for both casual or dressy occasions. Right now I'm wearing my studs more because they're newer, but I wore my j-hoops this much when I first got them so I suspect once the new shiny wears off the studs I'll wear them pretty equally. HOWEVER, I think you personally seem to want studs more?

I think if you have the money for the pre-loved huggies you should get them in them in the meantime. Since you will get them at a good price you can always re-sell them if you tire of them. Or you may just love them enough to keep them. Why not?

I haven't worn my huggies in ages, even considered selling them but then decided to keep just in case. My studs get more wear now but I waited a long time for them (15yr anniversary!) I'd wear cz for now because they're set in gold and should not irritate your ears and save up for real deal.

One word and one word only STUD

Hi Everyone, thanks for the tough love. I'm just itching for some bling. ;)) So I am gonna suck it up and CZ it for as long as I can. Makes sense to hold off long enough to get what I'm really after.

But just one more question. I think I will want to go bigger than 1.1 per ear. Should I get smaller for both sides through WF or BGD, and then plan on upgrading both? If I only get one to match the one I have, then I am not sure what I will do when I want to upgrade.

Well, maybe I just plan on being ok with 1.1 and then get jackets. But, DARN IT, I love the look of the 1.5 on each ear. I guess I will keep wearing these and see later if I end up feeling like these are REALLY small. Darn that DSS....

Buy the matching stone from a place with great upgrade policy. When you're ready to move on to 3ctw, you can try selling your original stone to the vendor or on Preloved. If prices go up significantly, the vendor may give you decent credit towards your total purchase price.

I got my studs from WF so maybe you should get upgradable studs from them, also, so they'll match perfectly. BTW, have you seen donnabrsd's studs? I think they're the ultimate size you're looking for:

mom2boys, thanks so much for this link. This is perfect. I don't know if my ear looks like donna's but I do want the end result to look similar to hers, same proportion of stud to lobe/ear size. Just like her, I don't want to be unable to see the bottom part of my ear.

Yeah, it does seem to make sense to me to get a matched pair. I can't sell my original stone from my e-ring, if I wanted to upgrade beyond a 1.1. So I should do it together, which would mean buying them together.

Ok, this is making more and more sense. Gee, I'm so glad I didn't buy any real diamonds the first time out. These fakies really help me get right to the DSS and see what I want. Maybe it will change again in a year or so. Who knows, but at least now I definitely feel I have more direction.

Thanks so much!!
