I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

DS, when I watched Jon's new video on the new cutting style of the J VS stone, it seemed to me that the 'flower' under the table was not as pronounced. The facets under the table seemed to blend in with the rest of the stone better. I liked what I saw from that video!

Can't wait to hear all your thoughts about the two stones. Size may win this game!!

Just thinking the same thing! Saturday delivery is usually before noon. I think I am more excited for you to get your diamonds than I was to get my rock!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

If she was at a rehearsal dinner last night, she might have had to dash off to a wedding today!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

Good point MissGotRocks!

Bummer......I know, I am bad!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

I am here! The diamonds are here! I have just been taking and resizing pictures. It will take me a little longer. I do have to start getting ready for the wedding at 2:30 EST and will probably not be home until 10:00-10:30 tonight. I am resizing some pictures now and will post in a few minutes. I had to hurry so these aren't the greatest pictures. It will take me a few posts to discuss all the characteristics and what I think about them. They are gorgeous, of course!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

I think I will start a new thread for the two AVR's, just so it will be easier to find that on page 8 of an older thread! I'll post the link here as soon as it is done. I just need to make about three posts to get the pictures in.

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

Update: saw those two diamonds, one was too big and lower in clarity than I wanted and the other was smaller and lower color than I wanted. Then the diamond that was the subject of this thread was returned to GOG because they wanted the larger diamond! So, as of today, I have the 1.81 ct. I VVS1 stone back with me to reevaluate if I can deal with the color since no higher color ones came in.

The diamond is still gorgeous, the perfect size for me (7.8mm), the perfect facet pattern/cut, but it is a borderline I-J color. My inclination is to think that if I had the right setting that I would be able to embrace the warmth in the stone. I cannot get a nice setting while having the idea that I want to later upgrade, so I need to decide if this is a forever stone. I am checking it out in different lighting to really get to know how it looks in all environments. In daylight it faces up white, but I can see the warmth in other lighting. I really want it to be "the one", though.

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

Just don't talk yourself into it if it's truly not what you want. There will be other stones even though it may take time. There can be nothing worse than having a stone that you really are unsure about. Then you'll be stuck in paralysis about spending the money for a nice mounting. I'd truly rather have nothing and be waiting to find the perfect stone than have something that just creates angst.

Did you take any more pictures of the stone?

I know. Keep reminding me of this until I say I am 100 percent sure. It is so hard to know without seeing it in a setting. Ugh! I feel like I am back where I started.

No, I haven't been able to take pictures because we are traveling to the mountains. I did bring the diamond with me, though! We have to go in a casino tonight because that is where all the restaurants are and I hope I can sneak a peak at it in that lighting! Haha!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

I just got back from single stone trunk show. Ari went outside with me and showed me a loose stone and a stone that was set in a ring. Both stones were graded as L-M color, but let me tell you, the stone in the setting looked so much whiter and gorgeous! All I notices was the gorgeous facetting. You may be bothered by the I or J color, but I don't think it's really noticeable once set in a setting of your choice. Another thing I learned today is that an old stone looks really good in an antique style setting. Aw, the OEC melees were gorgeous! I hope you can get a stone that you truly love, diamondseeker!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

I don't mean to be a naysayer or rain on your parade. I know that you would love to have one of these AVR stones in a nice setting. However, you have a nice ring for the time being and settling for something that you're not crazy about just doesn't make sense. I know it's hard to get color/clarity/size in one stone but you weren't willing to sacrifice on clarity - something you couldn't really see with the naked eye - so I'm not sure you'd be any more comfortable on the color issue. I'm sure the stone is lovely and would make a lovely ring but it's no good if you have to hide the sides with a setting or only view it from certain angles so the tint doesn't show.

Weather permitting next week - take it to a couple of jewelry stores and try sitting it on a mounting. Look at it against the metal prongs to try and determine how much color you can actually see. I assume you have a temporary holder for the stone. Wear it around in your living environment at different times of the day and at night as well. If it is not satisfactory in these places, chances are you won't be happy with it in the long run.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for you that you love it and I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that you have enough strength to send it back if it's not a forever keeper!

Oh how fun that must have been! That is fantastic that you were able to compare a lower color in and out of a setting! That is exactly what I was thinking, but I am not sure of a setting yet. Did Ari let you take pictures??? A SS trunk show would be so fabulous!!! Did you find anything for yourself? Thanks so much! I would love to settle on a forever stone, believe it or not!!!

Thanks as always,MGR! I have no decent jewelry stores nearby, but they did send back my Leon mounting and I did sit it in that. I know that I probably wouldn't be happy with this color if it was like my current ring, but I do think it has to have some kind of antique style setting. And it really isn't just to cover the sides because there is a warmth from the top, too, in certain lighting. It isn't bad, it is just different from my rb. But I agree with you that I have to not have reservations if this is to be my main e-ring. You should be proud of me that I have graduated beyond the 7.6mm stone that I thought was too big, though" I really do like the size of this one and I think I could go to 8mm maybe but that 2.19 was just too big, unfortunately, or I probably would have forced myself to deal with the clarity. That stone and this one are twins in cut which I do love!

You have come a long way in terms of size DS - slow, baby steps but you're getting there! I think we all just want you to be over the moon happy with whatever you choose - anything shy of that just won't do!

Thanks MGR! You are a good friend!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

The trunk show was so much fun! WF is holding my stone until I send the payment for the Vatche Caroline. However, after seeing all those gorgeous settings from Single Stone, I don't know what to do...

Ari actually suggested that I send my newly purchased MRB for recutting for OEC, but I don't think I want to do that. He said recutting a diamond costs $400/carat. Ari was very nice and he even took a picture using my phone so that I could email my husband right away.

Although I loved all the settings he had, I thought the loose stones were a little overpriced.

I just can't wait to see which AVC you'll up picking in a beautiful setting!

Did you know my daughter has a WF diamond in the Vatche Caroline setting? I think it is a great, classic choice that will never go out of style! And it will go with almost any kind of band.

I would definitely not advise recutting a WF stone! I think it would be detrimental to cut an ideal cut stone into a less than ideal cut stone! Back when someone did that, I asked Jonathan at GOG about it, and he said the pavilion angle needed to be over 41.something to recut into an ideal cut OEC/AVR. My current stone was 41.0 but he said that would not work unless we lost a lot of weight. So I am glad you are being cautious about that idea.

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

Of course! How many times did I go back to your old thread and look at all the pictures? I admire both you daughter's and your wedding sets! Actually, I was torn between the setting the you have (Tiffany repro) and the Caroline. My wedding band is the half eternity channel set band from Tiffany, so I think the Caroline will go well with that ;)

Now I really think old cuts are beautiful and the AVCs and AVRs are like the perfect diamonds! Almost all the old cut stone I saw today were not perfect, I mean, did not have great symmetry like AVCs or AVRs. Considering the price and everything, I think getting an AVC in I or J color is a really smart choice and you will enjoy wearing it. I don't want to say that you should get an I color if you're not comfortable with it, but I color old cut stone do not look tinted at all when set! Also, I was not drawn to higher colored OECs... They are beautiful, but did not have much charm in my opinion.

Ah, how about that! I honestly still love exactly what I have, and that Tiffany band would certainly be a great choice for either ring! MissGotRocks has that band, too! I am like you in that I love the classic pieces, but I also love the antiques as well. But I have become particular about cut from being on here and seeing the superior performance of the diamonds, so I just prefer the AV stones since I think great cut old ones are hard to find. And I do agree that a little color is less of a problem in an antique or antique style stone. I think this might be easier if I was certain about a setting but that is even harder for me to decide!

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

DS my gut is telling me to tell you to wait :)) MGR is right -- you have a gorgeous ring on your hand. If diamond prices go up, well so will the value of your own diamond on resale, so that's not such an issue IMHO. Wait. My diamond faces up like an I-J stone and I do not like to pair it with diamond bands because of the contrast. But you like to wear diamond bands! Wait for a very high I or even an H. Or an I with fluor. It takes time! But it will be worth it.

You bring up a good point (as usual), Dreamer. I definitely would be wearing a band with this ring and I can see the color contrast with my Tiffany band. When I had on the new stone with my other ring, I asked my husband what he thought and he said that my G stone was brighter. He knows nothing about the details of either stone, so his observations aren't based on any presuppositions. I asked him if the new stone looked bad in comparison and he said not bad, just different. I think I need my main ering to be whiter than J (and i am quite sure this stone would be GIA J). I think if I had an a secondary antique ring, it could be any color. I am just not sure I want my largest main ering to be a color that won't work with diamond bands since I already have a band I want to continue using. Ironically, I also have no desire for a really high color, either. H would likely be perfect unless as you said I could find a high I or I with fluoro. Ugh....

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

How's about the slightly larger table, are you ok with it now? I have a J ering that I wear with an F-G color stones eternity band. I can tell you, I hate the look. But I love my band and also love the stone, only seperately not together, even though I still wear them together till I can make other plans.

Yes, after seeing the new style cut I decided I like this table better. Thanks for the feedback on your ring and band. That is an important factor for me, too.

This is interesting. My OEC is an EGL I and a GIA J (according to Dave Atlas). I don't at all see the color difference between my stone and the higher color melee in my diamond bands. What I don't care for, however, is the look an old cut center stone paired with modern cut melee. This bothers me more than any color difference. Maybe I'm not as color sensitive as I thought I was.

I am wondering if color is less apparent in larger stones or something. I can't remember the color of your rb, but I think that is what makes this hard for me because there is a big difference in some lighting and in others, not much at all. That is why I am going to take a few days and see the lighting I see the diamond in most before making a decision.

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

My husband also thinks G color diamonds are brighter than diamonds in the I-J range. I think that is objectively true, now having owned so many diamond :rodent: White light return looks brighter in absense of any modifying tint. Or something.

I should clarify -- I would not likely wear my ring with MRBs in a band. But sigle cuts are different. Single cuts are less bright than MRBs in those teensy sizes. At least, the true antique ones are less bright. And I think you see more body color. Those two things make single cuts a nice compliment to a more tinted diamond, like mine, I think.

When you want something special and unusual, you have to wait sometimes! I was not looking for an 8mm diamond the whole time, but it took a very long time to find mine in terms of pure hours spent looking ::)

Demelza's RB is a G color too! I have compared her I-J diamond to her G in person, and whole the tint is noticable, it does not bother me at all. I picked the OEC in a taste test :halo:

Dem: Your bands you have paired with your OEC are all single cuts right? I think its not the color of the smaller diamond band that I don't like with J color stone, but it is the quality of the light return. The little white (sparkly) dot syndrome. Pairs well with less tinted MRBs, but to my own eyes, not as well with J color RBs or old cuts. Single cuts are a different story, though.

Re: I am in LOVE with an August Vintage Round (AVR)!!!!!!!!!

Dreamer, part of me thinks that if you and Dem are happy with J color, then I should be, too! I am thinking the difference is that both of you bought your diamonds in a setting and could see the whole package. That is my disadvantage.

I just asked my artist daughter what she thinks about the diamond since she saw it for the first time (her cross country team came in first place in the regionals today!!!) and she said she likes the facets better on the AVR but she likes the color better of my current diamond.

While I fully realize that my opinion is the only one that really matters, it is interesting to hear the opinions of those around me who know nothing about diamonds.

No, it hasn't only been single cut bands. I also have a Kwiat pave band I've worn with it a few times, but I agree that the quality of the light return just doesn't work with my OEC. I don't notice the difference in color (melee in that band are F-G) so much as the difference in cut.

Well, there certainly aren't any "shoulds" here. There's nothing wrong with not being okay with the color. If you were to purchase this 1.8 AVR, would you still keep your MRB? Reason I ask is that I think just having a G color MRB makes me feel more okay with the color of my OEC. It's purely psychological because I vastly prefer the appearance of my OEC to my MRB and, if I had to choose just one, I would pick my OEC any day of the week. But I still like knowing that I have a G color stone even if I never wear it. It's silly and I am seriously thinking about selling my MRB, but I do think having both is really the best of both worlds if you can swing it.
