I BROKE MY STONE

Hi TL! - hopefully you can see the ''fuziness'' here
Well, I think in this case, the dark body color might be a blessing. Once it''s set, it will go darker, and that imperfection might not be so noticable.

Well that is disappointing. Perhaps then you could have it embedded in the floor at the spot where it dropped. Or if that is inconvenient, in the wall or framed at eye-level by the spot where it dropped. It looks large. You could have it "set" and made into the button of your doorbell!

Haha:) its the worst thing that could have happened right?

TL- We do have some cutter here in Singapore (though I don't think that they are precision cutter). I might just try my luck to see if they can handle this.

eta: Can anyone tell me why I could not find the part that was chipped?? It just appeared to have disappeared??

I suspect it would need a complete recut. I saw that stone in his listing and he did some fancy design on it, and if you give it to a non-precision cutter, they might end up making it look worse, or more boring. Honestly, I don't think it's too bad face up, and if you were to bezel it, weil, that fuzziness wouldn't be that noticable at all. You would still have some nice sparkles. The dark body color really helps to hide the imperfection well. If that were a much lighter toned stone, it would be much more noticable. Good luck on whatever you decide, but honestly, I wouldn't invest too much in this stone. Set it in some silver and enjoy it.

Personally, if it were me, I would just get another from Uli if that imperfection bothered you too much. I find his cutting, polishing, design, and facet meets to be quite excellent, and I wouldn't want someone else to redo it. It just wouldn't have the same appeal to me as I find his pieces to be unique works of art. Each lapadary has their own style, and asking someone else to fix another person's work might have adverse affects, as much as I like various precision cutters. For example, I wouldn't ask Barry to fix a Gene stone, or vice versa. JMO.

Oh, I am so so sorry. How upsetting.

Big hugs!

Hi CT,

Understand that I''m calling this from 30,000 feet but if I''m not seeing any facets other than the mains meet at the girdle, then a recut of the pavillion and girdle might work here. From the pics I can only see the 6 mains on the pavillion and no others so that''s 6 facets that would need work on that end. Of course the 6 on the girdle would have to be re-worked also. Can''t really tell the depth of the damage and that would have an effect on how much would be ground off to get rid of it so I can''t really say what the yield would be. All that being said, I still think there''s still hope for a re-cut that would, for the most part, preserve the integrity of the design.

TL''s suggestion of a bezel mount is also a good way of dealing with it. The damage would still be there but its effect could be minimized with the right mount.

Laila- Thanks:)

Pete- thanks for the reply, I understand that its hard to visualize, but after all this Q&A I have a better understanding to what the available options are:) will keep you guys update on the outcome!

If you decide not to recut it and go to glue it back, note that superglue does not have that high a refractive index that I am aware of. A place that does antique glass repair will have Hxtyl. Hxtyl is optically clear, has a higher RI (around 1.52) and is an epoxy. The negatives are that it takes more than an hour to get tacky, and 5-7 days to cure. While I have Hxtyl, I don't do repairs. Managing expectations are not what I want to work with at the moment.

I think Uli was giving worst case scenario. But recutting the pavilion to remove the break would probably mean doing the girdle smaller, and then having to rematch the crown. It will lose weight and size.

On a repair cut, it will be getting close to the same $ as getting a new one from Uli is my guess. That material is not $$$ (not a $1000/ct for rough like good Tsavorite).

I have broken 4 including my prize 3.5mm Hogg Mine aquamarine that I found. I get it.

Well s#*%, Chic, I''m so sorry. It just sucks but you have the right attitude going about this.

Andrew Gulij does a lot of gem ''fixing'' and he does do concave cuts, Gemfix, you might ask him. I have bought many stones from him and he is a very kind man and not one to take advantage.

My heart dropped when I saw the picture; my gut feel told me that the stone is a total goner. I’m so sorry. I always ALWAYS open the gemstone case on a padded (clothed) table which is situated on a carpet in case the stone bounces off. Also, when opening the case, slowly pry it open rather than muscle it open to lessen the risk of flying gems. If you can’t see the damage face up and Uli thinks it’s safe to be set, I’ll leave it alone and just set it in a pendant to prevent worsening the damage.

good luck

I really appreciate the replies (angesg, chrono, gsellis, stoniegrl) I will hope to get it repaired (if it can be) Will check out with Gemfix soon:)

I''m crossing my fingers for you - hope everything turns out well in the end.

Well I still think it stinks but I think PS has come up with some good options for you. I would bezel it into a pendant setting. That way you''re spending very little money on it. HTH

Thanks virgoruby, stone hunter!

I do understand having it bezel is one of the most cost effective option. I just feel really uncomfortable wearing a flawed piece

, well maybe the flaw is not really visible, but I know its there
