In the final analysis on these bouquets (b/c hey, it wouldn''t be a true experiment unless I follow up on everything and then try to replicate the study next week

):

I stored everything from Sunday at noon until Monday night around 10pm, so about 34 hours, stored in the semi-dark and chilly underground parking garage at my apartment complex. It will be a little bit warmer in May but I tell you the last 3 days in So Cal have felt like May anyways, so this is a good simulation for the real thing.

1) the roses look magnificent--honestly, they look better now than they did 2 days ago when I made the bouquet!!! They have opened up as full as possible and all the little brown edges that were there before seem to have disappeared (I suppose they are hidden b/c some of the petal edges are curling back)

2) the hydrangea in the centerpiece did not fare so well. Two of the stems totally wilted but one of the stems is still healthy and great looking. I don''t know if the healthy one just had a wetter spot to sit in the oasis? I know that I may not have saturated the oasis and maybe the wilted ones just hit a dry patch?

I definitely have to try again with the hydrangea and find a way to make all the stems live overnight. Back to the drawing board...

I think the heat here in L.A. is unbearable right now, only because when I leave for work at 6, it''s freezing! Maybe because hydrangeas have so many blooms per stem, it needs MORE water? I dunno, I grew up with a greenhouse, and my thumb is so far from green it''s purple! My dad is a plant man, want me to ask?

Oh, Amber yes! Thank you! See what your dad says! I always wanted a greenhouse!!

i had done hydrangeas in my own wedding in July, and they need alot alot of water to keep them hydrated. Cut the stems at an angle and keep them in water for as long as possible. Don''t wrap the ribbon onto the stems for bouquets until the morning or wait as long as possible before having to do it. Also, try not to let water drip onto the flower petals. That will cause the flower petals to brown quicker, so don''t mist them the night before or anything.

As for timing to get flowers, I found that if the ceremony is on Saturday, then go to the LA flower mart on Friday Morning, it opens at 8am and get there then so you can get best pickings for the public. Bring one of those hand pull carts to carry all your flowers or some guys to haul them out to your car.

But I LOVED doing the flowers myself. Saved a ton of money and felt more special knowing that you contributed to your special day!

Tulip, those pictures are beautiful!!!

I agree with Tulip, and my dad is currently looking for more info on preservation. Tulip, those are stunning flowers!!
Selflove, it was pretty cool having the greenhouse, I always had fresh orchids and things like that. I''m going to use some of my dad''s flowers in either my hair (a nice orchid would be nice, I think) or my bouquet. My dad is one of those people who can grow anything from a dead stick. It''s amazing. I buy a potted flower plant at Trader Joes, and it dies in a week. I killed a CACTUS, for crying out loud.

Tulip--your bouquets are gorgeous! They look so professional! Thanks for the advice on the hydrangeas. I think going to the market on Friday is a good idea and then either Friday night or Saturday morning we''ll make the flowers. Like you, I think it seems more special knowing we did the flowers ourselves.

HMG--Have fun practicing with the flowers! With the right tools, it''s so easy.

Amber--LOL! I killed a cactus once too, but I tell myself it wasn''t meant to be b/c I dug it up from the side of the road in Texas. That cactus really didn''t want to go live in Minnesota with me, so it committed suicide.

I think it woudl be so special and sentimental to wear your dad-grown flowers on your wedding day!
