I googled my GIA number and found out my diamond is from Adiamor....

Then why didn't you buy it from Adiamor?
I didn’t know about Adiamor at the time! Actually I knew a lot less at the time!! Doesn’t it seem shady?? Or maybe this is normal practice

Who did you buy from?

You probably got it from a drop shipper and they both had access to the stone, and the store you bought It from called it in and then sent it to you.

I actually bought it parcel and stone which I found from rare carat . Not sure if you guys have heard of them. It’s like a kayak for diamonds. (My fiancé who’s into start ups and stuff actually bought it)

Interesting/ I didn’t really know how online shopping worked, but the guy there was super cool and sent me pics and videos of it which I thought was in-house at the time , but now I see the videos could have been made from someone else. I shouldn’t have said shady because the guy was really truthworthy and highly recommended (by rare carat) which is a legit company

Did you purchase it pre owned ? Or new ? Or it was advertised as preowned but you have paid retail price for it ?

No it wasn’t preowned (as far as I know! )
Just an online retailer or wholesaler (not sure which one)

Retailer. A wholesaler is B2B.

Are you still within the return period by chance?

Funny you mention this. I was just responding to your other thread about seeing the arrows and you linked the Adiamior site. Curiosity got the best of me because I was curious the angles of your stone to see how well cut it was. Yes, I was being nosy, lol. Actually envious....3.40cts. :eek2:

Lol I’m a bit of a size queen ( I def gave up clarity and color but I’m ok with it! )

I wish I came to this board and read up for awhile before I purchased! There is so much good info here! I did most of my research on reddit before and it didn’t really help much.

Yes it is common practice. p&s did not buy it from Adiamor, they got it in from the actual wholesaler. If you look at rare carat you’ll see the same diamonds listed multiple times. My diamond was listed by Adiamor and BN. At BN it was listed for $18k more! Thankfully I purchased it from Adiamor. Sorry you paid the higher price.

That makes more sense! Thanks for explanation! :)

For those reading this and buying from virtual inventory (aka drop shipper) in the future, this is good to know.

You can go places like rare carat and put in parameters to see if others are listing the same stone. Assuming they are, you can talk to certain vendors and sometimes obtain additional images, etc that others can't, or won't. Also, you can use the price data you discover to negotiate a better price for yourself. Most places will price match to get the sale as they realize a smaller profit is better than zero profit and in that case they have no unique product to offer you so they must compete on price, or risk losing your business altogether.

Effectively, this additional layer of research and findings puts leverage in your favor on multiple facets.

Also, if you have a vendor you already have an established relationship with, THEY can often call in the diamond for you if you give them the GIA number. That often leads to your favor both in terms of strengthening the relationship and getting a better price.

Did you pay more, or pay a lot more?
If you got it from a local jeweler, you should expect to pay more because you can see the diamond in person, they helped you pick it out, and they will clean it and advise you on mounting, etc.
If you got it from another online vendor, they vary from bare bones to high service. Higher cost doesn't guarantee high service, but lower cost always means less service.
Finally it's not at all clear that Adimor could have gotten that diamond and sold it to you at that price. They are working with a national database and there are always stones in there that aren't available.
BTW a common scam (Adimor is not a scammer!) is to tell you "I can get that 3.40 carat for you for less!" and then come back and tell you it's no longer available but that they have a nicer stone for the same price.

I see your big picture point of view, but there exceptions.

I was very happy to work with BGD and DK on my girl's setting. Neither was local. In fact, the closest was 8 hours away. Both provided excellent support during the transaction and if I have any issues will be there afterwards to take care of me as well. Can I drop by for a cleaning. No, that isn't convenient but that's not really a major issue either.

If I lived in Houston or LA where these were located maybe I'd agree more with your statement. But my experience has been the local jewelers I've found has not been at their caliber on any level, and I sure as hell wouldn't pay a premium to use them over either BGD or DK.

I do not support businesses just because they are local. They must earn it by providing me excellent product, knowledge, customer service, etc. When those elements line up I'm not worried about buying at the lowest cost, but it's funny how those places always seem to have FAIR prices for what they offer because they treat you as a CLIENT and not a CUSTOMER. The difference being a client is a long term relationship where both parties find mutual respect for one another. A customer is just today's sale that happens to walk through the door with no regard for tomorrow and is always based on maximum profitability of the seller.

So really, lower price doesn't always mean lower service. It may just mean the "other guy" is more greedy and demands higher profits, or that the "other guy" hasn't found a way to be as efficient in his processes; therefore, driving up his costs and making him less competitive with the more efficient vendor.

I'm being a bit dramatic as I think the price difference was only $1K. Which is not a TON, but since I was a SUPER easy client and had no real added value in getting it from one place or another, It's still a bummer as the $1K could have gone towards my setting :)

Also, the reason I wanted a "great deal" was because we actually ended up returning my first ring (as I was VERY unhappy with it) so I told him I could "do better" meaning quality/price so every penny counted (as far as my ego goes) - i know, i know - i'm the worst!

Small price to pay to learn alot though! I'll know better for my upgrade one day!

o_O o_O o_O

Future upgrade? LOL, what is the end goal? Many would die for a 3.40ct.

As far as the money goes, it's a sunk cost meaning you will never get it back so be happy with your ring. That said, never apologize for wanting maximum value for your dollar. What's done is done here but now you are better prepared for when upgrade day comes. :cool2:
