I had an I diamond appraised today, and was told that it was a K.

It''s beautiful! It will certainly draw eyes everywhere you go. Congratulations and enjoy it!

Thank you all for the compliments. You don't see any colour, do you?

dtnyc,
I live in the East 60s, and my office is right near yours.

Harriet pics are sooooo dependent on the lighting conditions the pic was taken under (and the camera settings) that what we tell you we see is meaningless.

Color can only be evaluated in person under controlled lighting.

I can show you pics of a D that look very yellow because the person took the pic under a normal light bulb but did not set the camera for this.
Most people don't even know they can set cameras for different sources of light.

There is lots of proof of this in the Show Me The Ring forum.
There are plenty of yellow-looking DEFs over there.
It is just the photography.

It surprises many people to learn that different light sources have different color.
Typical fluorescent is more blue-green.
Standard light-bulbs, or incandescent, is more yellow.

The reason this is not intuitive is our brain compensates very quickly and cancels out the color of light sources in person.
A white T-shirt "looks" just as white to us under fluorescent or incandescent light, or outside in sun or shade or at sunset.

Unlike our brains, cameras don't automatically compensate and will show a yellow or a blue cast if they are not "told" what kind of light is being used.

Kenny,

Does that mean that the WF-taken pictures say nothing about colour?

No pics from anyone "say" anything definitive about the color of a diamond.
Laboratories do not use pics to grade diamonds, and you should not use them to make buying decisions about color either.

Color evaluation can only be made in person under controlled lighting.
Even the color of your shirt or the walls or the blue sky can be picked up by the diamond.

Anyone can manipulate any diamond pic to make it appear to be any color, or have a lack of color.

That said, I have 100% confidence in the integrity of WF.
Just because technology makes it possible to misrepresent something, that doesn't mean that is happening.

I don''t see any color in it- but I would love to see it in person.

I work at 9 W. 57th.

What a conincidence! My fiance used to work for BofA. I''ve spent so much time waiting for him in that lobby.

I apologize for not reading all 17 other pages- but is this ring your official e-ring?

I think it would make a unique pendant.

Ha! great minds!

Any pendant design ideas?

So Harriet, it''s been a few day. Are you loving it? Thoughts?

I think so, though there's a faint tint from the side. When does shrinkage set in?

have pictures been posted? i missed them.

Go back starting with the very last post on page 16. (There are other pics higher up on that page but they''re not Harriet''s ring.

hmmm.... "I *think* so"? I''d want more than that from a 40+k purchase.... be honest, what don''t you like about it? is it too big?

Harriet, I think it''s gorgeous. I hope you love it too.

shay

Never let hot air from your blow dryer touch your diamond and it won''t shrink.

Harriet, that is a big purchase, "I think so" is worrisome, "hubba hubba" would be ideal. Is the color bothering you? Although the specs are great, YOU are the one who has to love it with your own eyes because YOU are the one who has to look at it every day. Don''t spend the $ if you aren''t completely happy with the purchase. Don''t feel like you are being forced to keep it because everyone is giving you the impression that you would be crazy not to keep it. There ARE other stones out there, and more coming down the pipes. Have you tried comparing it to other stones? You could walk into Tiffs (or somewhere like that -I suggested that b/c at least you know the cut will be decent so that wouldn''t be a factor) just to compare to see if you preferred less color, or even colorless - or it may just make you feel better about the one you have!

It took about 2 months for me.

I''m not sure why you''re asking though. Has it already set in
23.gif
, or do you want it to set in?

Sorry for the hesitancy -- that's just my manner of speech. The tint doesn't really bother me. The ring faces up fiery white, and the arrows are clearly visible.

Cehrabehra,
Is there such a thing as "too big"?

yes, there is! Not everyone is going to experience it but sometimes big stones make us feel uncomfortable, pretentious, vulnerable, inconvenienced, not worth the $$ after all, self-conscious.... and while those are not common here and not often discussed, it is certainly possible to feel some or all of those things. If it is always catching on things and that irritates you, if you feel the urge to hide it, if you feel like a crime target, if you feel guilty that the $ could have gone elsewhere now that you''ve had it and it isn''t all you hoped it would be... yes, a diamond can be too big. And for everyone one person who feels those things there are scores of others here who will gladly take the rock off their hands LOL In all seriousness though - yes, a diamond can be too big, particularly if it is something worn daily.

CB you surely hit the head of that nail! There are SO many places my ring is "too big"... subway, work, gym... while I love my ring and its size, it can be a liability at times, though this is mainly because I am a guy... EVEN in NYC!

CE, I also am a little concerned that my 2.26 will make me feel uncomfortable in these ways, fortunately asschers face up small.

Just last week someone at work noticed my round, which is just under a carat, and said, "Wow dude, that's a huge diamond."
