So I am now officially engaged...with everything but the ring!

Things are a little tight right now, and my fiancee has given me a budget of $3000 to make my engagement ring.

I know I want a gemstone ring and a setting with some kind of diamond accent, but other than that I am lost. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think doing something with a sapphire would be great. I''ll have a look around for ideas. Do you have any ideas of what you like [color, new, antique, simple, pave, etc.]?

Also, did you see the thread about the $20,000 taste but the $4000 budget. You might find some ideas there too.

my opinion: $2k on the absolute best color stone you can find. $1k max on the setting.

a really fine color gemstone can stand on its own. keep it simple: its your e-ring. if you want something more expensive and or flashy with a lot of diamonds, celebrate an anniversary with such a new e-ring.

much will also depend on whether you want to wear your e-ring 24/7 and also what color you like. sapphire comes to mind......... eta: spinel also comes to mind!

if you're not locked into wearing an e-ring 24/7, then the door of possibilities has just swung open.

and don't forget that whatever you decide, you'll probably want a wedding band to fit and go with your ring........depending on what you do with your e-ring, you make have to pay for a custom wedding band. check with your fiance and make sure the budget of $3K max doesn't include the cost of a wedding band. if it doesn't, what is the budget for that........

congrats on your engagement!

I''m in a similar position, although I couldn''t get my bf to be quite that detailed with a budget. (We eventually agreed on something between an X-box 360 and a down payment on a condo

). I would definitely suggest you look at spinel. They''re quite hard, they''re quite sparkly, and they come in the most gorgeous colours you can imagine. They aren''t hugely expensive unless you''re looking for perfect, perfect fire engine red, so if you''re open minded you can get a stunning stone that fits your budget.

Check out www.multicolour.com for ideas. I haven''t dealt with them so I can''t recommend them on those grounds, but as a source of ideas, they''re great!

I ended up moving away from spinel at least temporarily in favour of a lovely little padparadscha sapphire I found at The Natural Sapphire Company - I blame PS. I get to meet it this Friday, to see if I love it as much in person. Very excited! But if I hate it, I''m probably going right back to spinel.

Keep us posted - I want to see what you end up with!

How about a beautiful "mandarin" spessartite garnet? This stone is notorious for making people who hate the colour orange FALL IN LOVE with it! For $2,000 you can get a spessartite that looks absolutely phenomenal. It''ll literally glow from across the room, always reminding people that the love you and your fiance share is aflame, just like the fiery stone itself :)

If you like pink, check out some of the new-ish HOT PINK mahenge spinel from tanzania. Absolutely incredible colours. They glow like nobody''s business.

If you like green, a merelani mint garnet is another good idea. Mint garnets are painfully rare in a NICE light bluish-green (most are yellowish-green, yuck) in sizes over 1 carat. Once you see one that is well-cut in that perfect colour, you''ll know why I am suggesting it. With well-cut mint garnet, there simply is NO light source that makes it look anything other than spectacular. If cut with a higher-than-average crown, it will also show some nice dispersion in sunlight.

My personal preference is a 3-stone ring with a colored center. There are some gorgeous ones out there, including this site.

If you like the idea of antique-style rings, there are a lot at faycullen.com that are well within budget. However, review their customer service policies before buying to make sure you're okay with them (some people have brought their policies into question on here).

What's nice about their website is that they provide handshots of their rings 90% of the time.

Here are a few:
Round sapphire ring, $1350
Cushion ceylon sapphire ring, $3100
Emerald-cut sapphire w/ diamond halo, $2000
Round sapphire ring with fancy halo action, $2340
Round sapphire w/ diamond halo, $2080
Ruby w/ diamond halo, $1950
Emerald-cut aquamarine w/ diamond halo, $2275
Round sapphire w/ diamonds in the band, $1950
Round green garnet w/ diamonds in the band, $3100
Round sapphire w/ fancy halo action, $2600
Round ruby w/ fancy halo action, $2730
Princess sapphire w/ diamonds in the band, $2340

If you are interested in a diamond center at all, there are lots on there (with colored stone accents).

That green sapphire is to die for! I

Ohmygosh, what FUN! Do you like pastel colors, true colors, juicy citrus or deep colors?

Here''s a fun .96 ct geenish-yellow diamond ring (1.87 tcw) that just stretches your budget a bit. Okay - a big bit, at $3785. This may not be your ring... but it''s a pretty little set up for a gemstone.

i second this motion

I love red stones and diamonds :) YUMMY :)

After talking some more, my fiancee has told me that I can go up to $4000 if it includes the wedding ring...what does everyone think about this?

This Spinel that Gypsy suggested from JL White gemstones:

And this platinum setting from Facets/Signed Pieces:

Also, does anyone know how much it would cost to have a gemstone like that set into a setting like that? Thanks so much![/b]

That would be a gorgeous set! I''d photoshop it for you but I don''t have the right computer today. Maybe someone else could? You''d have to have the head changed to fit the spinel, but I wouldn''t think having a jeweler set the spinel would be more than a couple hundred dollars.

East-west or "reggler"?

These prongs look huge... and I''m pretty sure they''re not in the right positions, but...

Thanks! But I think I now see where the prongs should be on the N/S. I''m going to try again.

Ohhh, I really like that! I think I like it best E-W.

Good choice of settings, the whole look is very classic.

This is very rough (and I used double claws), but should they be here?:

Looks great! It''s shown as a wedding set, though, so one of the rows of diamonds is actually the wedding band.

I recommend that you contact Jeff White directly and ask about getting a stone custom cut for you... I have been talking to him over e-mail and he is soooo nice and informative, and his prices are so reasonable for the qualty of his work. For an e-ring, it could be so fun to be involved in the process of choosing the rough, and then you can get whatever cut you like! Jeff does the most amazing royal asscher-type stones (this one pictued is in pink spinel, neatfreak just bought one in blue sapphire). But he told me this process can take up to a month, so if you don''t want to wait, that red spinel is AMAZING!!!

I love coloured stone e-rings, mine is one too!

I LOVE those royal-asscher cut stones...with a pave'' halo and maybe a split shank too, that would be so drool-worthy

Oooohhh yeahhhh.

One of my favorite little rings, ever - and it''s because it has color. When I posted this pink diamond fantasy, the consensus here seemed to be that a halo of French cuts looked nice.
