I don't really understand it either, I commonly see this type of wear on sapphires but they have normally been worn daily for many years.
I would guess the lapidaries wife's would have great respect for the gems their loving partners have cut for them so maybe they treat them with more care/respect than this client does.
Also I find a lot of clients say they are very carful with their jewellery when the evidence would suggest otherwise, I guess being careful is a subjective thing.
