I''m so sorry, BG, but it really does sound like a blessing in disguise! I hope you can find a new job soon, but at least you have some time to gather your thoughts and decide upon your next step. Best of luck to you!

Sorry to hear the news, BrooklynGirl (I am also a Brooklyn girl =))...BUT, it''s great that you have such a positive attitude about it. Although cliche, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and this may very well be the blessing in disguise you have been looking for. May I ask what industry you are in? I''m an attorney at a large law firm in New York and although we have had no layoffs (yet...knock on wood), it is still a very scary time. The only thing that gives me peace is that like you, I think that if I were to get laid off, it would really just be an opportunity for me to figure out what I really want to do (since it''s definitely not what I''m doing now!). Anyway, lots of dust your way and kudos for having such a great attitude!

Thank you everyone for your positivity and well wishes, your words made me feel much better. The more I think about it, I'm glad they let me go, and hopefully I took the place of someone who actually needed their salary. I'm in a pretty good position to lose a job.

laurel25 - Sending sticky job just your way!

bebe - Thank you

. This will be a great opportunity for me to get some rest before the big day

April20 - I hope you nailed your interview! FI has a bunch of contacts in our area, and there are some people from my soon to be old job who can help me out (one of whom is a Sr. Exec, so it would be great if he can put in a good word for me).

perry - Thanks, I'll definitely check it out! I'm very glad for the separation benefits. When I first received news of my annual review, I wanted to leave right then and there, but a good friend of mine convinced me that it was a bad idea, as in the meantime, the job is paying me a very decent salary -- it was good advice.

hisdiamondgirl - I also believe everything happens for a reason, and I think this was long overdue. I am software developer, and my previous employer was a large consulting company. I like writing software, and I have liked it for many years, but I disliked very much the culture at my company. There was always more of a focus on politics, than getting a product out, and a lot of times, people were not rewarded based on merit. I hope it's not the case with all companies, and I can find a workplace where I'm surrounded by honest, well-meaning people, who treat each other with respect. If I can't find anything like that I'd love a job where I can be around dogs all day

BG - if you love being around dogs, you could volunteer some time at a local animal shelter. I know that many of the volunteers at my shelter end up being hired as staff because they already know people there. And even if that''s not really a career you''d want, it would be a great way to relieve stress and give back

Of dear... I hope everything works out ok for you!

I am so sorry to hear this! Hope you find your perfect job soon!

AG - It''s funny you mention that, because FI and were planning to volunteer at a local shelter once we were finished with the wedding. I''ll have to find one in my area.

Tuckins, Tacori - Thanks for the support!

im just wondering why you have to wait to apply for unemployment. I have a few friends that were recently laid off (with PTO payout and severance) and they were able to apply for unemployment right away. you should def check into that!

MsMisty - There''s no point, because unemployment doesn''t pay you for the weeks where you get severence pay anyway, so you could always apply for that later. This way, if you find a new job before you run out of severece, you wouldn''t have had to deal with the weekly requirements for UI.

I know A LOT about unemployment, as I consulted a state department of labor for 2.5 years. Funny how things work out, as I''d need to apply in that state, and get to see how well (or not) the system I helped create works
