It's so nice to read such great feedback, especially since FI is encouraging me to take this hobby to the next level by opening an Etsy shop. That would be a big step, but I do really enjoy making jewelry, and it could be nice to share my creations with others!

Lady_Disdain: How cool that you noticed the hammers! I deliberated a long time before spending the money, but quality hammers make such a difference. You must be a jeweler yourself--have you posted any of your creations here?

Brownie, you can get started on jewelry making with some very basic tools, depending on what techniques you want to do. If you like wire work, then some pliers, a basic hammer, shears and a steel block can get you started. Or, if you want to solder, a small butane torch (the kind used for creme brulle works fine for smaller pieces, like rings, earrings and pendants), some tweezers, a soldering surface, a jeweler's saw, a hammer, a steel block, a ring mandrel and a couple of pliers will get you started.
Even better - take a few lessons at a community center or local arts college. You get to play with all the tools, have a teacher show you how to do stuff and meet other people interested in jewelry making. Then, you can start your own collection of tools, based on you use in class.
Let me know if you would like the name of a few good beginner level books on jewelry making.

Lady_Disdain: Thank you so much for the information. I'd love to know the name a few good beginner books but I'm very new to Pricescope and can't figure out if it's possible to direct message you in order to avoid hijacking Ganesha's thread. Any help is appreciated!
