I made FI's hammered rose gold wedding band today!

This is just lovely if bought from a shop. The fact that its not just lovely but home made is super special! Well done. He must be delighted. Good luck with your own and congrats on the marriage.

I never would have known that you didn't purchase the ring at a store! You have a wonderful talent.

so lovely & special. what a talent you have!!

that is so beautiful!! it's the perfect personal touch to a wedding band. love it!

It's beautiful! I love hammered pieces, and the rose gold is gorgeous.

Thats is so cool that you made his band , it turned out great

Thanks again, everyone!

It's so nice to read such great feedback, especially since FI is encouraging me to take this hobby to the next level by opening an Etsy shop. That would be a big step, but I do really enjoy making jewelry, and it could be nice to share my creations with others! ::)

minmin001: What a coincidence, my FI had a dream about it too! Thanks for the compliment!

Lady_Disdain: How cool that you noticed the hammers! I deliberated a long time before spending the money, but quality hammers make such a difference. You must be a jeweler yourself--have you posted any of your creations here?

princesss: hee hee, me too! It's a funny but very accurate term for my FI. I love big hands on a guy. :naughty:

Smith1940: Thanks! It really was the sentiment that pushed me to try my hand at working with gold. I love that the first gold piece I ever made was for FI :)

I LOVE the band - good for you! There are places now where you can go make wedding bands together - I think I read about this in the NY Times. What a great, fun & meaningful idea!!!

Soooo awesome!! I think that when I retire I will make jewelery and someone else can garden. :naughty:

Ganesha: I love the ring you made. You did an excellent job! May I ask where you learned how to make a piece like this? I'm sure some of the tools are expensive but I'd love to learn how to make a few basic pieces for myself as a hobby.

I love hammers! Most of mine are pretty basic, since I had to buy a lot of tools at once, when I decided to quit my office job and become a jeweler. But I have a Fretz (the heavy chasing hammer) which is my number 1 hammer - I use it for pretty much everything, except chasing 8) I was showing a student today how a good, balanced hammer moves metal faster and with less effort than a heavier, unbalanced hammer - he was amazed that the little Fretz worked better than his big, manly hammer. I really want a couple more and a couple of forging stakes as well.

Because of PS rules, I can't post my work here, but you can see it in my site (the link is in my signature, below). I started on on Etsy (I am still there) and, last year, started my own site. If you want to try it, go on and open your own Etsy store. It is a lot of work and the beginning is very slow, which can be frustrating, but it is also very rewarding. I would also recommend that you join the Aspiring Metalsmiths team. It is a great bunch of people, always willing to help, and the members range from people who are just starting out to very accomplished folk.

Brownie, you can get started on jewelry making with some very basic tools, depending on what techniques you want to do. If you like wire work, then some pliers, a basic hammer, shears and a steel block can get you started. Or, if you want to solder, a small butane torch (the kind used for creme brulle works fine for smaller pieces, like rings, earrings and pendants), some tweezers, a soldering surface, a jeweler's saw, a hammer, a steel block, a ring mandrel and a couple of pliers will get you started.

Even better - take a few lessons at a community center or local arts college. You get to play with all the tools, have a teacher show you how to do stuff and meet other people interested in jewelry making. Then, you can start your own collection of tools, based on you use in class.

Let me know if you would like the name of a few good beginner level books on jewelry making.

Lady_Disdain: Thank you so much for the information. I'd love to know the name a few good beginner books but I'm very new to Pricescope and can't figure out if it's possible to direct message you in order to avoid hijacking Ganesha's thread. Any help is appreciated!

There is no PM on Pricescope, but we can head over to the Hangout forum and create a thread there.
