So I have started looking into rings with my girlfriend and we are now so confused!!

She really likes the Tiffany Novo ring but Tiffany charges you so much just for the name. So I have a jeweler who''''s related to me who is willing to make me wtvr it is I need and can get me wtvr diamond I ask him for. So at first I thought I had this all figured out but the more I have been reading on this site the more I realized I have no clue about diamonds at all.

First off can someone help me with the diamond. What kind of cushion diamond am I looking for because apparently they have so many different cushion cuts? Whats the difference between all the cuts?

Second, does anyone have any pictures of cushion cut novo rings that are not actually tiffany so I can see how they look and show my gf or even novo type rings with other diamonds just so that she can get a look?

Thanks for all your help.

Click here for a good discussion concerning the different cushion types. The discussion on that thread may help to at least point you in the right direction.

I did a search for examples of Tiffany Novo-like settings but couldn''t find anything during a cursory search. Hopefully someone else will chime in that can find the information you are looking for regarding the setting. Personally I think the actual Tiffany Novo setting is so pretty and well made that I wouldn''t want to attempt to have it replicated. But that''s just my opinion.

I had a Tiffany Novo ring until I sold it yesterday (*sob*). I haven't seen one in person but in my opinion Brian's Gavin's novella setting looks just like it but with more diamonds. The cushion has a particular look which is rare to find but there is one I found on james allen that will give you an idea of what to look for. It has to be a rounded square. This one looks just like a novo cushion...

ETA- if you like that diamond or any other one you see I'm sure Brian Gavin can call it in for you so you can do one stop shopping.

A couple of notes:

1. The thread linked above is useful but outdated. There has been advancements since that thread.
2. That James Allen diamond is not like the Novo cushion. For one, the novo cushion is a 8 thin main cushion and not a 4 main cushion. Most of the Novos are square and not rectangular.

Your best bet is to go for a 8 thin main Cushion Brillant with a 1.0 ratio. Another alternative is to purchase a square H&A from Good Old Gold which in my opinion performs better than the Tiffany Novo.

No photos to share with you. I am not a fan of the Tiffany Novo setting and haven't saved any photos. However, I think there are plenty of much nicer solitaire with pave band settings out there.

You need something with a GIA plot that looks like this.

I know the novo has more facets but I'm certain that diamond is a much closer look to the novo than the ubiquitous crushed ice cushions. I think it looks visibly square. The novo has a maltese cross pattern whereas that one is turned like an X but look how similar it comes off to my novo:

Sorry Kelpie, with all due respect, I don''t think the 4 main James Allen cushion looks anything like your novo. Your novo is much nicer. I have never seen a Maltese Cross pattern on a Tiffany Novo but I don''t own one. I just see them on my friends and in the store. I typically associate the Maltese Cross with a more antique cut stone like the GOG August Vintage.

Kelpie you nailed the fact that you need medium sized virtual facets (medium sized flashes) that you won't find in a "crushed ice diamonds" therefore it is correct to look for a Cushion Brilliant not a Cushion Modified Brilliant.

Charmy you nailed the 8 mains requirement, the shape outline and near square LW ratio found in most Tiffany Novos diamonds.

You are also correct in terms of light performance a Square Cushion Hearts and arrows(HA) is a branded cushion which almost always has a perfect hearts and arrows pattern and has superior brightness and fire as compared to a Novo, they are also cut to much more consistant proportions and faceup a little smaller on average than the average novo.

--------------
A maltese cross is found in 8 main cushion brilliants usually of the vintage variety (e.g. August Vintage Cushion) this term should not be confused with the arrows from 8 thin mains found in the Tiffany Novo or the X pattern found in the mains of a 4 main cushion brilliant. All three have very different looks.

To see the difference between an 8 main thin, Vintage 8 main (one branded line called August Vintage Cushion in shown the video), Square Cushion HA, and 4 main Cushions take a look at this video http://www.vimeo.com/9188543.

Like Charmy I would say the Novo lies in between the 8 main thin and the Square Cushion HA but I think it is still closer to the Square Cushion HA than any of the others in terms of the shape outline, thickness of the arrows, and contrast pattern.

OP if you post your 4 C preferences we can try to find you an 8 main thin cushion brilliant or Square Cushion HA with the closest match to your preferences.

Regards,
CCL

Here is an example of a square cushion H&A, and there is a video comparing it to an H&A. This is what I would get if I wanted a modern looking cushion, the optica rival H&A rounds.
