OK, first let me say I don't know very much about jewelry. Well, I do know which finger the ring is supposed to be on.

My girlfriend and I are avid swing dancers. So I want to get her a ring that fits anywhere from the 20s to the 40s.

My girlfriend also really likes my mom (Yeah, I'm lucky in so many ways). My mom's wedding ring is an orange blossom ring (from 1946) so I thought that would make a good starting place.

My mom's ring looks like a heavily worn version of this - http://www.portero.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/699x681/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/2/-/2-11607-232529--antique-art-deco-18-karat-white-gold-traub-orange-blossom-embossed-flower-ring----c4594697.jpg

I've been to Jewelworks.net and their orange blossom rings are much more ornate than I think my girlfriend would like.

Orange blossom seems to be a whole range of styles. So maybe I'm not as narrowed down as I thought I would be.

I have time. I'm probably going to propose on our first anniversary dating in January

So please help me. What kind of engagement ring would go with the style of the picture I posted? And where could I find it?

Hi jt and welcome!

I love Swing, in fact, I am playing more of those old numbers and jazz on the piano nowadays, lots of fun!

I see our lovely Gypsy is on the boards, I am sure she will have lots of good advice for you plus she is a settings wizard, we also have others that are brilliant with settings so with all the collective PS heads together, I am sure you will end up with a fantastic ring! :wavey:

Ok well, you can get a nice orange blossom TRUE VINTAGE piece. That might be a great fit for her. And we can help you find that.

Do you want new or would a vintage piece be okay?

If you want new:
There's also this one, which is dogwood blossoms, but is close and just plain GORGEOUS: http://www.greenwichjewelers.com/shop/designers/van-craeynest/products/van-craeynest-dogwood-engagement-ring

So Traub is the brand that is going to have the band most like your moms: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Art-Deco-18-Karat-White-Gold-Traub-Orange-Blossom-Embossed-Flower-Ring-/291178478155?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43cb96fa4b

http://www.rubylane.com/item/480330-14401x20Decox20Traubx20Blossom/Art-Deco-18-Karat-White-Gold

You can do a number of things with that. You can do a plain solitaire. You can BUY a band and have it custom made into a setting. You can do a deco setting that would pair well with a band with that pattern on it.

This is what a setting from the 20's would look like that has orange blossoms and would pair with that band:
It's GORGEOUS, but it is going to be VERY hard to find. You can work with a really good custom vendor though (and we can help you with that) to do a reproduction:

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

THIS gorgeous solitaire from ERD reminds me a bit of that orange blossom setting. The head is similar. And as you can see it is floral.
http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/fleurette-6-prong-bouquet-inspired-solitaire-engagement-ring-bpid-70-18.html

If you want to BUY a true vintage Traub band that is in her size you can send it to ERD and have them modify the shank width and height of this (maybe) so that it would pair well with the band. They would need the actual band though.

This one is in FANTASTIC shape: https://www.etsy.com/listing/176894347/traub-orange-blossom-18kt-white-gold?ref=market If it's her size it would be a great buy.

Hi jtdavies. Welcome! :wavey:

Please don't be offended by this. The orange blossom ring sounds nice, but your GF is NOT your mom. You GF may like your mom, but it doesn't mean she wants the same things.

In fact, I think you may risk sending the wrong message. I would be very careful - you don't want her to think you are just marrying her to take the place of your mother.

So you've been with your GF for less than a year - I would say that you should go shopping together, find out what she likes. Even if you just go for a stroll by some estate jewelers windows, it would be better to find out what HER vision for an e-ring would be.

This is what you Mom's ring would have looked like NEW. By the way.

I see what Staryeyed is saying. I ADORED my MIL's ring. And I would have been thrilled with a setting like hers though. IF ultimately that had been what my DH had gotten me, I would have been very happy.

Just make sure she really likes it FOR HERSELF. Not that she likes it but FOR YOUR MOM.

I like a lot of things. But I don't always like them for ME. KWIM.

Also that Dogwood ring, would be a great way to get something CLOSE but not exact (still unique to her, not a copy of mom).

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

I'm going to have to agree, you need to ask her to look at rings for the future and show you some she likes. Many of us love our MIL and wouldn't want the same rings. I also definitely would not want old rings that had wear unless it was a family heirloom.

Van Craeynest is not producing rings right now, so that is not an option.

I'd use Caysie van Bebber or David Klass as they should easily be able to cast rings like that for you....that is, if you find out that is what your girlfriend likes.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

I appreciate what you are saying. I would never had attempted this with any previous girlfriends. I can just imagine the blow up that would have resulted.

But she is different than anyone I have ever met. (Of course, that is probably why I am looking into rings<g>)

When she hears that this is the same style that my dad gave my mom she will melt.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

Gypsy-

Vintage or new...Hmmm...

I can't say it matters either way. Is one vastly more expensive than the other?

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

I realize you are not asking me, but I will tell you that I would want a new engagement ring and wedding band that was made just for us. Let me put the wear on the ring over the years. I don't have a problem with antique rings for other purposes, and you could even set an antique stone in a newly made antique setting. But I wouldn't give her a set of worn rings that don't have any family connection.

Beverley K makes settings that are repros and similar style to the time period you are interested in. There are some pictures here:

http://www.greenwichjewelers.com/shop/designers/beverley-k/1/viewall

Here is an example of a ring made by David Klass:

Another set by DK (engraving can be more floral if that is your preference):

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

What is your budget and what do you want for it. Let's start there.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

I think this is an orange blossom setting. And I see nothing wrong with getting her a True Vintage Ring. And this one is lovely (though I'd ask them if they can do anything about those prongs): http://www.loveaffairdiamonds.com/0-95ct-old-european-cut-diamond-ring-i-j-si1/

I get what you are saying about her melting over a vintage piece. It's the continuity. It's telling her you want with her what your parents had. And that would (and did, with my DH) melt me too.

I think you should go for what you want. You know her. We don't.

What's your budget.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

What I would do, in your place.

Budget depending, I would send this picture to David Klass. Tell him you want a reproduction of that ring.
Get a quote. In platinum, if your budget can afford it. If not then ask for Stuller's X1 allow of 18kt white gold instead, so it never needs plating. (You may want to ask for the quote to a matching band at the same time).

Then we can work backward to a stone budget from there. I think either a true antique OEC stone or an OEC faceted new stone (budget permitting) would be the best stone for that setting.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

Depending on your budget then... you could go for something like this for the center stone: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/12279/

With setting you are probably looking at about 7,500 for the ring, including the custom setting.

If your budget is less than that, we can go to a true vintage stone or drop in color easily.
If you budget is more than that we can go with a larger stone.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

LIoness there are a few on there that would work.

http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=5491 Same type of orange blossoms and elegant.

If you budget is higher and you like this setting better, you can ask David Klass to something similar but with nicer/deeper engraving execution.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

Another option! Buy this: http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=5035 And have it made into a setting by cutting it open and adding a basket. I think it would be done and made to look good with the right jeweler. And I can think of a few that could do it for sure.

Re: I need help with picking an orange blossom engagement ri

Sorry, I disappeared for a bit. My girlfriend was around each time I had a chance to check the computer.

I was hoping for something $2k - $3k

Thank you for all the help.

Here's what I recommend:

Get THIS STONE now: http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/loose-diamonds/68ct-old-european-cut-diamond-gia-h-vs1.html#.U7HSGLHrDYs AGAIN BUY THIS NOW, is my advice, and we'll help you find a setting. This stone is GORGEOUS and perfect for your budget. And it's a true antique and I think she'll appreciate that aspect of it!

Also, I still believe David Klass CAN do an $800 14kt setting for you with the orange blossom engraving like this one here, so it is still worth sending him an email that says:

"Hello David, I was referred to you by Pricescope. I have an $800 budget for a white gold hand engraved solitaire setting like the one below. The orange blossom engraving is the most important part of this for me. It can be done on a stock setting, if that's what needs to happen. The center stone is a round diamond with a diameter of 5.5mm. Also if possible I have a preference for Stuller X1 white gold so that the ring doesn't require plating. Is this something that you can help me with? Thank you!"

You can reach David Klass through the link below: http://www.yelp.com/biz/david-klass-wholesale-jewelry-los-angeles

Then you would have the completed setting sent to Grace and she would have the stone set into it.

That will be the way to get the nicest ring for your budget. And she will feel SO special that you put so much effort and thought into it.
