I or J diamond for an engagement ring?

Tiffany's diamonds seem to be not lower than I color, and many of them do seem to be I color. J is too tinted for me.

As a woman, I would choose a 1ct center over a smaller center and two sidestones. If the budget allows a 1ct but not with sidestones, I say get the 1ct, in a simple and inexpensive solitaire mounting and then change the setting later. When I got engaged, I received a .8ct that was 5.9mm diameter, and to me, there's a significant difference between the 5.9mm diameter and the 6.4 - 6.5cm of a full 1ct. So, I would be willing to give up sidestones and fancy setting to get a larger center and then build on that later. Actually, I bought the mounting for my diamond, later.

eta: That Brian Gavin "I" with strong blue would be great. It will face up very white. Some tint will be visible from the side, but just very slightly.

Ok, just an update from last night. We passed by a Tiffany's store last night and I asked her if she wanted to go inside... I made up an excuse that my sister wanted something from there and I'd probably get it for her bday.

As I subtly pushed her to the engagement rings section... I noticed that she was looking at the classic Tiffany setting. I casually mentioned if she liked them and she said, yes... then pointed to the 3 stone ones and said that she likes those too!

Ok, as a guy, asking you ladies... can you decode girl language for me? I'm really tempted to just ask her flat out what she likes.

Oh, she was also looking at the rings which looked 1 carat above... even with the side stones. My girl has expensive taste! Will she be bothered by the color (I or J) then if she's likes them big and sparkly?
Not a single woman wouldn't want to look at the largest tiffany e rings lol
An I color doesn't have any effect on the sparklieness
Go for the 3 stone! Its going to have more of an impact than going .1ct higher and going to a solitaire

But he can afford a 1ct

This is about the point where I'd suggest getting the biggest diamond in your budget and then upgrading the setting later. That way she gets a bigger center AND she can have an input in the setting later on for an anniversary or something.

I'd suggest this..it has a very nice looking brown tint (which you might not like but only really visible from the side), almost looks pink or purple, anyways, it scored a 1.7 on the HCA and on her finger it'll definitely cover a lot of real estate! It's beautiful and after the PS discount would come to about 8k and they have a simple tiffany setting

**Forgot to post the diamond!

another option is to go a smidge smaller: HCA .9 1.27 I VS1 (which will still look big on her):

and maybe then this will leave room for this tiffany setting:

The 1.27 diamond is really amazing! If I do go with a solitaire setting, I could get that instead of a three stone.

The prices at Tiffany's were just ridiculously expensive.

I guess I just have to decide if I should go with a smaller center diamond with side stones or a larger center diamond in a solitaire setting to fit my 8k budget.

Thank you so much, ladies! Your help is greatly appreciated by this guy who is definitely clueless!!! :twirl:

Right!!?
And they cant even promise a precision cut stone

They have great sales people though... I felt embarassed walking out of there with nothing  but I can't bring myself to buy those things knowing that there's a better deal elsewhere!

Well, Tiffany is selling their name and that's what you get. I'd prefer getting a bigger stone that performs better and a similar setting and pay 1/2 of what they're selling. If money was growing on my tree in my back yard, things might be different.

I would get the bigger now and then have her get what would make her happy later. I think it's a fair compromise. That way you will be 100% she'll have what she loves ;))

**Oh, and if you're serious about the 1.27 put it on hold ASAP (you'd be surprised at how fast people that are lurking steal what we do all the research on!!!), anyways, put it on hold and get an idealscope.

haha im still holding on to that 3 stone idea, but if its a 1 ct compared to a 1.1, that would be my choice. a 1 compared to a 1.25 though is different. Make sure you get a quality solitaire setting though, its the little things that make the big difference!

Ok, just one more nit pick on my part. the 1.04 is a bit deep.

But since you still are struggling with which route to go just my last 2 cents. if you took her to Tiffany's to try on rings and you said the rings she tried on were bigger than a 1ct if she's anything like me, she will hold on to that. So from my perspective in this situation, bigger is better. Not only that, but you will score HUGE points if around an anniversary you tell her that her gift is getting the setting she wants (with more diamonds!). Just saying.

You like it? LOL! I absolutely love it, but didn't know what OP would think about that tint. Is it me or does it look more pink/purple?

I love my J diamond, looks white to me! I would go for the larger J :naughty:

still waiting...

I didn't have the 1.47 reserved anymore. I will be picking from just the two :)

That's ok. I think the 1.27 is a great compromise! Keep us updated

I like the 1.27. Much smarter to get the larger stone now. You can always buy sidestones and make a three stone for a future anniversary!

Moving forward, I think it has the best value. Will post the light scope images when I hear back from James Allen. Thank you for your help ;)

Hi ladies,

May I get your opinion on this Idealscope image?

flippin' gorgeous!

Thanks, Julie! This is what James Allen also recommended on the diamonds that I sent. I'm going with the three stone engagement ring for my gf. Hopefully, she says yes!

Perfection!!! Is this the 1.27???

Yes it is. I'm going a bit over budget, but she's worth it!
