sometimes it is !!!!! and sometimes this..........

OMGah, DF, I LURVE Hello Kitty!!!

I overuse words. Especially the word "and".

Exclamation marks (for the same reasons as Thing2 and WishfulThinking). Parentheses. Ellipses.

I am militant about commas. I studied German for a long time and commas are intrinsic to German grammar. The introduction of a comma can actually change the way a word is spelled auf Deutsch. Anyway the upshot is that now I'm hyper aware of them and every time I see a sub-clause in a sentence in English my head screams out for commas to delineate it. A sentence that's missing commas is like nails on a blackboard to me!!!

I overuse and abuse smilies :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D way way way way to much at any given time so much so when writing letters to lecturers in the past I have had to edit my emails to remove said embarrassing expressions of randomness.

It is a sickness that I cannot help

Parentheses (I guess).

Definitely exclamation marks. I seem to have at least one in every post.

I over use these........... and I''m trying very hard to stop!

Oh gosh for me, it''s exclamations. Nan asked me why I always do three. I dunno!!!

Another thread talked about using the word WOW. I love using that word, but since that thread, no wows. Booooo.
11.gif
Oh I keep using Wow and now extra Wow''s since life is too short not to have Wow''s
25.gif

I am also a huge eta: now person because I hit submit and then I think ''oh yeah, one more thing.''
Ok, I''m using my WOW''s again. WOW to me, is a positive thing. I know some can be like, wow, and it''s not positive. But people that know me, know I am excited for them. So my Wow''s are a good thing.,
9.gif

As are your''s Miss Skippy!!

i agree! i''m still using wow

Oh, goodness. I am a big lover of parenthases and elipses. I love them (I guess I just love how they look...). I''m also a big "P.S." user, and I''m impressed that it hasn''t driven my boyfriend up the wall. I also use a lot of letters to empasize something reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally important. Probably shouldn''t, but oh well...

I love my ellipses......and you''ll have to pry my cold dead fingers from them.

In informal written communication I definitely overuse commas, exclamation points, CAPS, and (embarrassingly) acronyms (LOL, BRB, etc.). In formal written communication I probably overuse commas and dashes. I overuse words in general as well; there isn't a word count in law school I haven't gone over and then spent hours deleting my precious work to meet the mark! In spoken communication I know I overuse the work "like" probably dating myself, "P.S." like OUpeargirl, and "just so you know" when I'm talking to SO haha. In life I overuse my hair straightener, blowdryer, debit card, PS...
2.gif

I also overquote movie lines (anyone else do this?).

I'm a bit of a merry maker.

I am laughing, because this is the truth!! You''ve done that to me so many times, I''m on to you now.

I don''t know what I overuse, smilies maybe?? I''m sure someone could point something out.
9.gif

I use the words "So" and "Like" way too much, but that was the norm growing up in California. And, even though I haven''t lived in Cali for many years, I haven''t been able to rid myself of the nasty habit.

I overuse exclamation points, especially in e-mails! I think I sound mean if I don''t use them! I don''t know why! I also overuse ellipses in e-mails...
I do this too!!! I''m just an overuser -- there''s a made up word for you, deco, and some dashes for you, Gypsy, oh, and some commas for me -- I guess. I love a good semicolon too, so I probably overuse them.

I''m with you Kimberly. I overuse ( , )! And reeeeeeeepetitive leeeeeeters! And !!!!!
You''d think there was going to be a comma ration and my use of them was an attempt to get as many in as possible, before they''re taken away.

Bwahahaha! Thanks for my morning laugh, MB, I almost spit tea on my laptop (that could have been disaster).

I wish I had that problem. I am always at the other end of the spectrum, adding words in to meet my word requirements. Being succint is good and all, but it happened almost every time I had a paper due.

As for the movie lines, my husband quotes them on occasion, but because I''m not a movie buff I usually don''t pick up on it and he gets annoyed that I don''t understand what he''s referencing so he''s kinda stopped doing it around me.

OMG!!!! Toooootes shorten words unnecessarily ... and use ... too often ... and USE CAPS TO STRESS WORDS when I''m too lazzzzeee to bold something. Also, misspell for comic effect. Or misspell out of pure dumbosity. Invent a few weeeeerds too. Or, SQUEE, use the colorful slang of other fine peeps ''round here. Or southern abbreviations. Though most of them are so MEH! Blerg.
2.gif
You invented the word Squee. I just love it when you say that!!!
3.gif
I love SQUEE too, it''s fun to say, although I''ve never used it in real life, or on PS for that matter, because it seems like copywright infringement, almost.

''Squee'' is actually an incredibly common term on the knitters'' social networking sites. It''s quite simply the most appropriate reaction to one''s first encounter with the most beautiful yarn one has ever squished!!!

I think I over-use italics too

As a non-knitter I would have never known. I like thinking deco invented it, though, so I''m going to pretend I don''t know that.

Italics, I don''t use them, or boldface, much at all, but I do think they''re pretty for some reason.

In writing: parentheses and dashes.

In real life: paper towels! I am addicted.

(DF: I didn''t even "recognize" you without your smiley face avatar!)

I am a rabid comma and exclamation point user!!! I just love me some!!! Of course, in my IT world, they have a name. They are called BANGS. BANG! BANG! BANG! So I say Bang when I''m typing. !!!=BangBangBang crazy, eh?

I have a friend who is so excitable that every email I get from her has about 900 exclamation points in it! And it''s always signed xoxoxoxoxo. And she sends them to EVERYONE! so my DH and I, when talking about her, will say OMG!!! Did you get the message from ___? xoxoxoxo!!! It''s really funny to hear him say that in a high-pitched squeal, which is how I always read her messages in my head.

Haha - it''s actually frowned upon to be anywhere near the word count in law school, as they think you aren''t being concise enough. They actually like shorter papers so bad news for me.
7.gif
You''d think I''d learn, but sure enough the night before a paper is due there I am scouring my paper for any words I can delete. I always loved writing and feel so constrained in legal writing with all the word counts and citation rules, but I guess I''ll have to adjust. My SO & I love mostly the same movies so we quote them in common conversation and afterwards feel like nerds.

Oh ''fraid I can''t claim "squee" ... may have been the 1st to use it on Pscope ... not EVEN sure of that (Lysser, maybe?) but I do love it so. The word I was inferring I may have invented was the much less catchy & unfun "dumbosity".

Ditto ditto ditto!!!

I totally overuse exclamation points - I think that people will misinterpret my intonation if I don''t use them - I''ve been told that it is a good thing I am a girl, because men couldn''t get away with that. Ha. Men also don''t seem to care about how people interpret what they write! haha (yes yes - generalization based on the men I know)

Mine are !!!!, Purell Hand Sani (it's an addiction really), and the word "Dude".

Delster, I'm also a huge stickler for grammar and punctuation. My mom wouldn't answer our questions when we were growing up if it wasn't gramatically correct.
