I feel like an idiot.

So I put that wedding set on craigslist this past thursday. Friday morning I get an email from a person who is interested, but is heading out of town that night and can only meet on Sunday (today). He asks me a million questions and has me sent him a million photos.
Friday NIGHT I get an email from someone else asking me if the "item" is still for sale. I write back and say "As of right now, yes".
I don''t immediately hear back from this person.

I mean up with the first potential buyer today. He and his fiance look at the rings and say that they would like to think about it for a day. I don''t think they are going to buy them.

I get home tonight and I finally hear back from the other potential buyer. All the email says is, "How much is the cost of the item? and please notify me with your paypal account immediately so I can make the payment."

Without even blinking an eye I write back, "The rings are _____ and you can find me on paypal by searching my email address which is _____________. "

For the record, this person already had my email address since this was my second email to them.

So anyway....only AFTER I send the email do I stop and say DUHHHHHHHHHH.
This person doesn''t know my name, hasn''t told me their name, didn''t request any addition information on the rings, apparently doesn''t even care if they''re real, didn''t even say the word "ring" in either email, didn''t want to haggle, and wants my information "immediately"....no information on where to meet up or where to send it or anything.

DUH. DUH. DUH!!!!!! Duh!

So now I don''t know what my next step is. I can''t find anything on this type of scam. I still have the rings, obviously. And I don''t have any money in my paypal account that they can steal. Can they even hack my paypal account with just my email?

I''m assuming I''m going to get a fake payment or something. But right now I''m just worried about my paypal account since all of my bank information is in there.

your account should be ok...
but there is a good chance any payment made will get reversed as fraudulent.
I would reject any payment from this person but dont know how to do so thru paypal.
Read thru the help and if it isnt there call them.

No, they can''t get into your paypal account with just your email. You need someone''s email to pay them so it''d be shortsited of paypal if you could hack into an account with just an email address. I''d make sure that your password is unique.

Good luck with your sale!

My guess is that they''ll either sell your e-mail for spam or else try to defraud you somehow (just keep your eyes open). But the point of paypal is that it is secure and non one gets to know your bank info, so it''s safe from that perspective.

As others said, at this point you are fine. Just don't give them any other info and DON'T send them the rings even if the payment initially goes through. It likely will bounce later!

ITA.

Thank you everyone for your responses...and sorry about all the typos in my original message! FI was sick and I was in a hurry.

I went ahead and deleted all of my personal info from my paypal account just in case. I haven''t heard back from the person, so we''ll see what happens!!

It is sick and sad how there are so many scammers out there.

I had the same exact experience when I tried to sell my old engagement ring on Craigslist. I didn''t give them any Paypal information because I couldn''t understand why they were so interested in the ring after seeing only four pictures, but this must be a common scam that people run.

So irritating. You''re just trying to go about your business and make a little sale. Sheesh.

I hope your account is okay!
