westjenn- have you really been waiting for Jeff to find " your stone" for 6 months? That seems like a long time! In the meantime has he been in touch with you with different options or possibilities of something similar, or do you have to keep calling him?

Love your stone,Dianabanana. How complicated was it to import to Canada? Did yours also take many months to find? Good luck with your setting!

Yes, it has to be light enough but don''t confuse that with the saturation level or vividness of the colour. That must be as strong as possible so that the sapphire will be eye popping.

chrono, neatfreak, harriet, violet, gene, flygirl -

thank you all for your comments. i'm actually feeling a tad discouraged. let me summarize and see if i'm hearing you correctly.

an asscher sapphire is not out of the question so long as i have it large enough (gene), light enough (chrono, flygirl, neatfreak, violet, harriet), and perfectly cut (losty and ellen)

i should say that i had an emerald cut sapphire for my 21st birthday with side diamonds. i no longer have it, but i loved it dearly. it didn't flash in all lights, but i actually liked that about it - it was like a mysterious woman who only dropped her mask in the right circumstances.
Whitby,
Don't be discouraged. We're here. Here's my $0.02:
- Yes, it must be large enough because asschers are deeper and sapphire denser. But, Jeff will guide you.
- Yes, the sapphire can't be too dark, but it doesn't have to be light either. If you like the look of your dear sapphire, then go for that shade.
- With Jeff, you will get a perfectly cut stone.
- Another factor is material. Since you've chosen sapphire, that's covered.

Whitby...I agree with Harriet, don''t be discouraged....just be patient!

Spirit - um..no...it wasn''t complicated to import to Canada. I sent it to my Dad in Seattle and then it snuck its way into my purse and it didn''t say a thing when I crossed the border! Not something I''d normally recommend....

If you have a cutter ship the stone to you, all you pay is the gst (on the converted amount) - usually Canada Post will collect the total from you or UPS or Fedex, depending on how it was shipped. It took about 3 months from my first conversation with Jeff to the time I got the stone...not bad at all!

Thanks, DB. Thought you had to pay both gst and pst but good to know that if the cutter sends it , then just gst!
Whitby- don''t be discouraged. The right match will come your way in time!

Hi Spirit. Yes its been about 6 months. I do believe its taking this long because I''m very specific with the color of asscher sapphire I''m looking for as well as size (not larger than a 1.5) According to Jeff he doesn''t come by these often at all, hence the wait.
He has been in touch with me, I''m on his email list and get notifications of new stones he has available. He sent me an email a few weeks ago but unfortunately the stone he had in mind for me, wasn''t for me. I really don''t mind the wait because I know I''ll find one someday!

The one thing I''ve learned in researching sapphires is that it takes a lot of time & patience and lots of research! --but fun research!

well, i just went and bought a couple on ebay to see what sort of thing i liked. they''re only cheap and it was really to just get a feel and hold a couple on my hand.

i''m looking now at one on wildfishgems. - also to get a feel. it''s not an expensive gem in the general scheme of things, but i quite like it and it might make a nice pendant. it''s much lighter than most people seem to like, but it reminds me of places i''ve been and water i''ve swum in, so it''s kinda cool. it''s poorly cut, tho; does anyone have any suggestions on who might do a great re-cut?

the stone on wildfish that i love is sold (bummer!) so i''ve emailed jeff white and will call him on monday to get on his waiting list also. my budget is *not* huge (think around 3k) so we''ll see if he''s able to help.

fingers crossed!

All the cutters I know no longer offer recutting services due to risk they no longer wish to assume.
