I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m clarity blind! I just sold my ER setting so I sent my uncerted diamond to GIA while I was trying to figure out what setting I wanted to put it in. I was just curious and I really wanted to know more about the angles. I knew the clarity wasn’t great and that it wasn’t eye clean but I was a little shocked when it came back as I2. Honestly, I had never really looked at it that carefully with a loupe while it was loose. I guess the settings have always hidden most of the “junk” so I never really noticed. I can only laugh when I look at the plotting diagram on the GIA report. It looks ridiculous.

It didn’t really matter what came back on the grading, I still love it no matter what. I’ve been wearing it for 10 years. Here’s the back story… When I was 12 I saw my dream ring in the window of a jewelry store. It was (if I remember correctly) a 6ct pear with huge trillions on either side and had a price tag of $676,000. When I met my husband and started talking about marriage I told him that my ring had been picked out for 10 years but because I loved him so much I would settle for anything over a carat. We were really, really poor at the time, living in a 300 square foot apartment in the “hood” and eating a lot of ramen noodles and McDonald’s $1 menu. I wasn’t really serious about the 1ct+ diamond I would have taken a ring out of a cracker jack box. Anyway, he found a 1.07ct solitaire at a tiny jewelry store down the road from us. I think they were asking $1600 or $1800 for it? He ended up talking the owner into letting him trade a bunch of jewelry he didn’t wear plus $100 cash for the ring. He must have felt really sorry for us! There’s no way the scrap value on what he traded in was substantially more than what he was asking for the ring. It meant a lot that he figured out a way to get me what I asked for and I really couldn’t believe he pulled it off. Even as an I2 I think he did pretty well for $100 and some ugly 1980’s jewelry that had been sitting in a box for years!

Here are the specs on my “ugly” diamond -
1.07ct
Color: I
Clarity: I2
6.55 − 6.62 x 4.03 mm
C/P/S: VG/VG/VG
Fluorescence: Faint

When I looked at the GIA charts I was surprised at how close it was to EX/EX/EX when you consider how bad the HCA score is.

PROPORTIONS
Depth 61.2 %
Table 60 %
Crown Angle 34.5°
Crown Height 14.0%
Pavilion Angle 41.6°
Pavilion Depth 43.5%
Star Length 55%
Lower Half 85%
Girdle Very Thin to Slightly Thick, Faceted, 3.5%
Culet None

And the HCA results. Eeek, that explains the lack of fire!
Light Return: Good
Fire: Poor
Scintillation: Fair
Spread: Very Good
Total Visual Performance: 6.1 - Fair

Is there ever a case where an I2 like this could be given a makeover to perform better?

I tried to take some decent pictures when I got it back. Sorry about the black camera reflection, it makes it hard to tell that there are no black crystals in it. Now I see what they saw! Haha

I think it goes To show that what is acceptable to some might not be to others and if this stone made you happy then that's great.

For that sized stone even at an I2 clarity it was a bargain. And the story that goes with it - it is just lovely your husband obviously wanted to find you the biggest most sparkly rock he could afford. I think that is very sweet!!!!

If it has visual inclusions then yes it will come back as an I2.

However I LOVED the story of your DH and trying to find you a diamond  He is such a keeper!!!! I like the diamond and I have an I2 set into a RHR 3 stone that I wear on occassion. Mine has 1 large inclusion that is partial hidden by a prong and then the rest just blends into the body color.

What a sweet story! Your hubby is a keeper!

Priceless!

Your husband's love trumps the hca score, ASET, GIA, AGS cert, everything!

Thank you guys. He’s definitely a keeper! Have you ever seen a diamond this included be recut? I’m curious as to whether it’s even a possibility. It’s very white and sparkly but it doesn’t have any fire. I set it as a solitaire for now but I’m starting to think I need to go back to a halo or side stones to get those rainbow flashes back.

What is important is the love that is put in to the diamond ring. It is all personal preference.

I've authored the re-cut of dozens of SI-border diamonds in the last few years. The question marks here are the extra facet, t-wisps and feathers. Unless this diamond has a magic nine-lives and won't require re-girdling in the re-cut (unlikely) any improvement will cause it to fall below the 'magic' 1.00 ct mark. If you don't mind an incredible performer at 0.9X carats it could very well be doable - subject to an in-hand inspection to verify physical specifics.

For what it's worth, many tradespeople would not go forward, simply because you're likely to go < 1ct.

Thank you, John. I’m glad to know it’s not necessarily out of the question. I’ve always toyed with the idea of using it as a side stone in a 3 stone anniversary upgrade one day. If I went that route it losing a little weight would probably be beneficial.

I had a 1 ct family stone with sentimental value that had poor cut. I just couldn't bear to wear it as it was. So I had BG recut it and it ended up at .80. But I'd do it over a thousand times before I'd leave it as a poorly cut 1 ct stone that I wouldn't love. Now my diamond is beautiful ! So I encourage you to get an opinion on the recut!

I don't know if it could be given a makeover but the story is SO PERFECT that I don't think I'd give up that diamond for anything!

I’m definitely going to talk to BG about it then. It’s so nice that he’s only 30 minutes away from me. Do you have before and after pictures of the stone you had recut?

That is such a touching story and makes the ring / diamond all the more special.

DS, that was an INCREDIBLE transformation! I’m definitely taking it in for an evaluation after seeing that.
