Hello,

I just bought this tanzanite from gene. I want to make a pendant for me, for now i think about something simple, "just" this stone.
Do you have any advice ? I'm a man so is there some kind of pendant style i should "avoid" ? and some i should maybe think about ?

Thanks a lot for your help

No ideas yet, but yowza! That's a beauty! I love the color!

What a stunning stone! Congratulations on getting it.

In terms of design, I think the stone speaks for itself so I'd be tempted to keep it very simple. Being a man do you need something to be "manly" if you know what I mean, or are you okay with something that could be more generic?

How about something like this? You would be able to see all of the tanzanite from different angles? I would be tempted to have a slightly different bale so you could wear it on a leather cord or a chain.

Thanks a lot for your help. yes i'm looking for something Manly but i'm open minded :-)
I really Like your pic, it's a good idea, i searched on the web and i didn't find something really interesting but this is Nice !
I was in two jewellery today and both of them told me about leather cord too. i Like the idea but by the way i also think That it's, How Can i say, "not Like a real jewel" if you understand what i mean...but i think i'll try and if i find That it looks Like it is for a kid i Will change for a chain.
I was also thinking about steel instead of white gold. but i need to find the good pendant model before ! That's the most important thing !

Again, thanx for your help, it's modern and interesting (the pic)

p.s: sorry for my poor english

Noctus - your English is fine!

I fully understand about a leather cord. I would NEVER wear a precious gemstone on a leather cord all the time because they are not durable enough. A good tough one would be okay for when you wanted a more dressed down look but not all the time. A chain is a much better idea. There's also a wire-chain link called Viking Knit (I'm attaching one I've just made) that would look good made in silver. What I would strongly suggest is that whatever design you go for, you have a fairly substantial bale so that you can change what you hang the pendant on - that gives you more options.

In terms of pendant design the one I linked to would look different with a square stone but I think it would look fantastic. You could do it in white gold, silver (but would suggest you get argentium silver as this doesn't tarnish as much) or palladium. Personally I don't like palladium because it looks quite grey even when rhodium plated and I'm not sure it would showcase the gemstone well enough (in terms of contrast of colour).

Do you like Celtic designs? You could have something like the design below (perhaps smaller) but with your stone in the middle? Maybe a square Celtic knot design?

Wow! I have no suggestions at all but wanted to say...WOW! on that stone. Yum!

Gorgeous stone! I noticed that on his site & loved it.

LD -- your chains are wonderful!

Noctus, what about something along these lines -- both from Tribal Hollywood. You could have something made in a similar style, adapted for the stone -- on a chain like LD's they would look terrific:

What about going to Peter Lees and doing something like this? I think it is a unisex design, and could be easily modified for the cushion shape your Tanzanite... with the right chain and maybe switching out the princess diamond to something else, it might work.

Or have you perused the T. Lee Gold website? There's some great designs there that may give you inspiration. (http://tleegold.com/complete-jewelry-collection/neckware-necklaces-pendants/)

You could try getting in touch with Ryan Quantz. He has made a couple of cool pendants, and has some "unisex" ideas. Although his Etsy site is focused on stones right now, you could send him a message if you were interested. He does only do bezel work, not prongs (not sure if that's an issue with tanzanite?).

Absolutely gorgeous stone!!

Thanks NKOTB! :) I'd certainly try to come up with a nice design that is unlike the majority of men's jewelry these days.

Just in case anyone is wondering- I don't have the proper equipment for doing prongs. I can do them and have in the past, but I refuse to risk a customer's stone with improper tools- Especially Tanzy.

LD,
What a pendant! I love it and can imagine it with a square stone. It's masculine yet doesn't look clunky and chunky. It oozes elegance.

Thanks for all the ideas ! I'll have a look on the links and see if there is something i love !
I'm not too interested in the pendant viking style or else, i think That something neutral Like the first pic of LD is much more, what i am looking for ! But by the way thanx for the ideas !

And what do you think about something very simple Like this ring (adapted to a pendant for my stone of course :-))
Just gold around the stone...too girly maybe ? Too simple ?

Not too simple but rather feminine in design. How large is the stone?

Thanx chrono. The stone is 9.3 mm. As you said, and as said a jeweller in my Town, for a more male style, i should pût the stone with no empty Space of gold, i don't know How to say it in english but i,hope you understand. Looks Like the first ring pic you attached.
I agree with That even if i find it sad not see the different angles of the stone (pavillon...)

I do not like the idea of such a large stone to be gypsy set (stone set completely into the metal). Since the LxW is 9.3 mm, expect the band to be at least 9.5 mm in width and that's huge! A stone of that size will be close to 7 mm in depth and I don't think wearing a ring that thick will be comfortable. I've seen some men's prong set rings here on CS. Check out posters who go by KLewis, SleepySpinel, and ChrisA.

You have to be very careful with trillions that they don't become too much like the Superman logo (unless you like that)! For me, this ring verges on that so wouldn't be a choice I would make.

Thanks chrono and LD but i don't want to make a ring ! And absolutely not in trilliant. I want to make a pendant with the cushion tanz, the pic of the ring was just an example !

You definitely threw me off since the example you posted is so different from what you have and what you want. It led me to think that you have a trilliant (another stone) that you want to set in a ring.

Sorry chrono and LD, it's my mistake ! i wasn't clear in my explanation...
i was just thinking about a pendant like this ring. in fact like the way this trilliant stone is mounted on the ring.
And for now i think that à simple gipsy set pendant for my cushion tanz Can be manly and simple.

A ring or a necklace. :)

I very much like your pendant idea but want to caution you to create a setting that lets enough light in. It is indeed a beautiful stone but since its a darker stone, and you are considering something like a gypsy setting, you'll need to do what you can to keep it from blacking out in the setting.

Sorry - I thought you had a trilliant as well!

I would second Minou's post. Gypsy setting is not the most flattering for large stones for all the reasons she's said AND it will end up being a very deep ring. For me, I would want to see as much of this stone as I could to really appreciate it. I also don't know whether you'll find a benchman to set it in a gypsy setting. Typically setters prefer to prong set Tanzanite as there's less stress to the stone. If you do decide to go down this route then please make sure YOU are insured if the stone breaks during the setting process. A benchman is highly unlikely to offer you insurance (which is normal if you don't buy the stone from them).

Most bench would rather prong set than bezel set tanzanite because of cleavage and hardness issues.

Thanks for all the advice !! I understand what you say about the gipsy settings...finally the first pic of LD or a very simple setting not gipsy Will be great, i think

Beautiful stone!!!

I'm a guy too and I'd be comfortable wearing a pendant if it was set in a very understated silver/platinum/white gold setting and the "chain" was black leather.
The leather might have a pair of matching metal "beads" a couple inches from the pendant.

Agree with you, i can't wait to have this stone in my hand, it Still in the hand of uspostal.... Grrrr
