I purchased a 1.27 ct I-VS2 H&A Ideal from BGD and now need to find a nice setting. This is not an engagement ring in the normal sense, but rather a 45 ++ years later (maybe call it a 'Thank You' ring)....I am looking at this setting that BGD has....I sure would appreciate your suggestions.

(1)wider band, this one is 3.5mm

(2)multi side stones, similar to pictured, don't know if pave or channel set is the way to go. This one has channel set.

(3)prefer a 4 prong head setting, this one has 6 prongs

(4)this one is 18k, I don't know if 14k or 18k is the right way to go. Most everything I have looked at is 18k.

Looking at it objectively, the design you chose is sleek and lovely. My gut reaction though is that it's a bit dated looking - I think because of the channel-set stones. BGD's "Peggy" design is similar but without the channel setting.

What is your fiance's objective with asking for a wide band, and how wide would she like it to be?

I love this setting! It does look a bit dated, but I love the sleek look with the smaller diamonds. I'm sure they'd modify it for you to your specifications...

oh good find! I like the idea of doing s ssplit shank vs a wider band. As you get older it is harder to take on and off wider bands (since you mentioned this is 45 years in the making I assume you are not the average 20-30 something getting engaged).

Guys thanks for the feedback, yes I looked at that split shank, nice but maybe a bit over my budget.....so what I was looking at may be a bit dated (see what happens when an old guy like me goes shopping by himself).

Sarahbear.....ya your right, more like a 65-70 something married over 45 years, old school kind of guy, I guess it shows.

My wife does not wear a lot of jewelry, her job limited her doing so, slowing down to semi-retired, just wanted to put a nicer ring on her finger when she did put on a ring. Her original ER & wedding band is tucked away, it is not much of anything (I was young, dumb, in love & broke), but she would never get rid of it, and more importantly, my wife would never ever try to replace or buy herself a nicer ring, so I am going to do it.

That is a good idea, I will get with BGD and maybe see what mods they can do to this setting I was looking at. I first started with an idea to do a custom, but decided to go with what they may offer. I have not asked them if they would set the stone in a setting that is not theirs, will ask. This is harder than picking out the stone.

I missed the 45+ years part of your post... As I said, I do think this is a beautiful setting, and I think "trendiness" might matter a lot less to your wife than it might to the average ring recipient that we see (or hear of) here. The setting you chose also has a nice substantial look to it, and it looks like it would be comfortable to wear. I imagine BGD could replace the head with a four-prong head. You might also ask whether this has (or could have ) a "comfort" shank, which is more rounded on the inside and easier to put on and take off, especially when knuckles are a bit larger relative to the rest of the finger.

Good luck!

ETA I think the 6-prong head looks nice with this particular setting. The two side prongs seem to mimic the lines of the shank. AND... your wife is going to be blown away when you give her a lovely 1.25+ carat BGD diamond!

I'm in my late-50s and I would wear that ring in a heartbeat. Young girls today are into super thin bands. I don't mind a ring with a bit more body to it, and this setting would be a lovely choice.

Congratulations to you two on your long and happy marriage.

Thanks guys...

VRB..I will check on the 'comfort fit', I only thought the 6 prong would cover more of a smaller stone than the 4, don't mind the look of 6 but that picture of the setting has a huge stone.

Fly Girl..makes me feel better, that was kind of my thinking also, maybe a more mature look.

This is a surprise and I really have no idea of what my wife would prefer, whatever she gets she will tell me its perfect...I should know, but really don't, so for a guy to make the choice??...I still have to find her ring size......I need you guys, thanks!! much appreciated

Do you know if your wifes current (but tucked away) wedding set still fits? If so then you can download a PDF from here and then match the ring you have to find her proper size.

I love that you are doing this for your wife! My grandfather did the same for my grandmother years ago and it made her absolutely weepy! He incorporated the diamond from original engagement ring to add more sentimental meaning and it was perfect!

Just a thought, if you were interested in adding the stone from her original e-ring, this would make a beautiful new ring and would truly represent the past, present and future..

Christina, your grandfather sounds like a good man. I really wanted to do this, but the E-ring diamond is such a bad one, cut/color/so small and the wedding band has 2 very very small diamonds, I just don't know how I could incorporate it...I think it may be best as it is, which may be ok.

I think her ring size is 6, but her knuckles are bigger now from working with her hands. Maybe 1/2 size or so...I am going to try to get my granddaughter to help me determine the size...also it was mentioned with the setting I am looking at, that the 3.5mm may be harder to get on/off.

BGD was suppose to call yesterday to discuss settings, got an email saying they were behind, so I guess maybe Monday they will call. I have taken notes here on everything so I will ask on my concerns.

Thank alot for your suggestions...you guys are great.

Thank you new4diamond. My grandfather is an amazing man, and I'm very blessed to be able to call him Grampie. Last year he was diagnosed with Alzheimers and it's now in it's advanced stages. It's heart wrenching to watch this once brilliant man become confused about even the smallest of things. Within the past few months he has forgotten who my grandmother is and has actually placed a call to 911 to have the 'strange women who refused to leave' removed from his home. I'm grateful that she has so many memories of the enormous love that he has for her and hope that she is able to find comfort in them. It's a horrible and cruel disease, but it's taught me to live in the moment and to always remember to tell those close to me how much I love and appreciate them....by word or by action, my Grampie never failed to do that.

My grandmother too has developed arthritis in her knuckles and actually had to have the shank of her rink remade to add a closure so that the shank actually opens to slide over her knuckle and then snaps closed around the base of her finger. I'm not sure what the correct terminology is, but I think that she is probably an extreme case, I've actually never seen this on another ring. Often time ordering a size larger and adding sizing beads to the inside of the shank is sufficient, and I'm sure that BGD will be accommodating if the ring is slightly larger or smaller than she needs. Fingers tend to be a bit smaller in the winter months than in the humid and hot summer as well, so this is something to also consider when ordering.

I think you made an excellent setting choice. I love these types of surprises, and I'm sure it will be a memory that she will always cherish. I'm looking forward to seeing photos of this beauty on her finger! :))

Thank you Christina, I am so sorry to hear about your Grandfather, it is very cruel having a loved one suffer from such a disease. I lost my grandmother when I was much younger and before they diagnosted Alzheimer. You cherich what you can.

Thanks to all with your insight, suggestions, etc....I decided on the setting I pictured, just got off the phone with Brian (BGD) and he assured me that my choice is a good one. I stayed with the 6 prongs at his suggestion, I also found that my wife's original e-ring is a size 4.5 and my granddaughter is somehow going to get her to a jeweler as she needs to get measured for a 3.5-4.0 mm width.

You guys have a fantastic web site & forums...and as someone said...'I'll be back'

I actually liked the one you have posted from BGD..it looks very pretty. Keep the 6 prongs it brings more stability to the setting.

Goodluck. :lickout:

Aww, this is so sweet, she is going to be thrilled. What a lovely surprise for your wife! I think the one you selected will be perfect.

Another vote here for the original one you posted.

I think you made a beautiful choice and what a sweet idea. Please come back and share pictures once you receive it!

Stargurl78/motownmama/Laila619/vishke8/ and all of you....

thanks guys, this was much harder than picking the diamond. I wanted something that was really not too blingy, not too much of a e-ring look, simple with a touch of something (just didn't know) it was just hard for a guy (I know after 48 years I should know her well). I wanted to make it a surprise.

Yes I am staying with the 6 prong, most thought that it was better...I will try to take a couple of pictures, I have not finalized the size, I planned well in advance, October is the month, but I know I will come up with an excuse to give it to her early.

I have read so many posts here on pricescope and you guys share so much, I found a great information & learning tool here....now I find myself studying diamonds, the grading process, the experts here on their thoughts & knowledge, you got me hooked, anyone wanting to buy a diamond needs to visit this web site first.....thanks

One more question: 18K white gold or Platinum?...it is $300 more

Yay! I'm so glad you're sticking with that setting! It's gorgeous! What metal is her wedding band? Or are you getting the matching band to? If her current band is 18kt or platinum, I'd get the one that would go with her current metal. If you're getting everything including the band, then I say it's up to you. My set is 18kt and I love it. Platinum I've heard is more high maintenance.
