They hasten gum recession in a lot of instances. There was just a thing in NYT about this -- I had been waiting for this to see more publicity. I do not use one. My whole family does. One young-adult kid will need gum surgery to fix the erosion. I have always been suspicious of them. Kinda like scouring your pots and pans with steel wool -- initially, you're amazed at the results but then...

OT, but...is the gum issue because people press too hard with the electric toothbrush rather than just lightly holding it against the teeth/gums and letting the brush do the work? I use an e-toothbrush (and floss daily as well), and the hygienist says my gums are a thing of beauty. <--See?

Back OT.

Yes -- that is my understanding. It is not a design flaw, per se, but more like operator error. But it sounds like operator error is pretty common, in which case it's almost a toss-up. (Not a dentist or hygienist.)

I recommend using it on the lowest setting...it really is a more efficient way to clean the teeth and be careful with your gums by operating it on low and use a gentle touch

I use a water pik! It’s amazing!!

Hey, you gotta be detail oriented when it comes to surveys, otherwise the results may be skewed.

LOL as I was reading the replies leading up to your comment I was thinking the same thing--and then you said it!

What kind of research are you into, and are we your sampling frame? :lol-2: :P2

believe it or not, yes, people with 9m or even 90m or 900m net worth still need to work, because they just bought that ocean front estate in maui, need to get another bugatti, need to buy another yacht. humans desires are endless

Getting Durkheim and strain theory vibes here. :)

Cocofloss y’all!!

The stuff is MAGIC. Legit. Worth every dang penny. It makes you not hate flossing. Heck, it makes you actually want to floss because you feel like it’s actually accomplishing some thing. No more rubbing at your teeth with bits of plastic bag. But also no water everywhere, no stray bits of floss to now floss out of your teeth…

And the scents are actually nice. Not repulsive like most tooth stuff. Just scented - not flavoured. I’m stocked up on apple cinnamon.

I use an electric toothbrush and a water pik! I LOVE my water pik! I have braces..:roll2:

You can brush too hard with regular toothbrushes too. I think its operator error in either case.

BTW, I use an electric toothbrush at night and a regular toothbrush in the morning. I don't do this for any particular reason
its just that I brush in the shower at night and at the sink in the morning. I guess I could buy another power brush.

Edit...do we need to start a toothbrush thread??? Funny how this subject has infected multiple threads. I guess since I use
both I can buy Earth mined and lab grown diamonds and not be a hypocrite! ;)2 Such a weird comparison!

I often use a "manual" toothbrush in the shower, so Yay!, I can also feel relief at owning all earth-mined, and one item (studs) of lab-grown. Phew!

I think tooth talk is becoming the PS pie of yesteryear. Whenever a thread goes south…

I can’t use dental floss, can’t take the feeling of it wrapped around my fingers. So flossers only for me. Anyone else have an aversion to floss around the fingers?

YES. Omg. Okay bear with me. I know I sound like a Cocofloss commercial. But I tried to explain this to my other half and he was looking at me like I was losing it… But you’ll understand…

So literally every other floss I’ve ever used, it’s always a Slippery When Wet situation… And, like, it’s your mouth, of course your fingers are gonna get a bit wet… So you HAVE to wrap the stuff round and round your fingers just to even hold it… Cocofloss doesn’t, though!! It stays grippable even if your fingers are wet. No more finger torniqueting and no more half foot of wasted floss…

I should demand payment for marketing this stuff

Hmmmm. I have been using J&J Reach. It's the only "Goldilocks" one that is slick enough to get between my teeth yet still feel like it's "doing something" (unlike those teflon tape ones which seem better suited for putting on a new showerhead). But the fatal flaw, as you point out, is the slipperiness -- I need to carefully dry my hands before using it. Which is a weird step to have to take in the middle of your routine. Like carefully drying my fork between mouthfuls lest the food slip right off.

I imagined Cocofloss would be ingeniously spun from naturally-rough coconut fibers or something and they even pose the product in a cracked coconut shell. But it seems like it's just plastic. Oh well, I will give it a shot -- thank you! Hopefully they have plain or mint -- not sure I need pie-flavored floss... :P2

You’ll love it. No joke. It’s magic. Never thought I’d ever get this attached to floss. Of all things.

It’s pretty wide… The floss itself, the diameter off the roll isn’t small. At first I thought there was no way it was going to fit between tighter teeth. But if you rub a section against a tooth a couple times it “flattens” into a fibrous tape real quick.

The only downside for me is that it isn’t waxed (or if it is it’s barely so)… I have a bar across the back of my lower front teeth and threading Cocofloss through can be a bit of a pain. Vs. Waxed flosses like Reach where the ends hold up much stiffer. Well, as long as they’re dry :lol-2:

I'm with you @YadaYadaYada ! I cant do floss. I only use flosser pics. It hurts my fingertips to use floss and I cant open my
mouth wide enough and get my hands/fingers contorted enough to get in there. I end up drooling also to make the whole
situation worst. Hence, I "floss" and brush in the shower at night. I can drool all I want without making a mess or having my
husband look at me like I'm broken.

@yssie You could probably sell anything. In that other thread, you made the pearl forum sound like it was a spa! Come on in
and float in tubs of luxurious iridescent globes of goodness!

The pearl forum where we don't have to discuss toothbrushes:lol:

I shouldn’t be laughing but…

That may be a dealbreaker. Well, if it doesn't work for me, I'm sure it will make a cherished gift :mrgreen2:

No, no, it can be thinned out as much as you’d like!! Just, um, rub it back and forth once or twice before inserting. (We’re still talking about floss, people!!). Don’t you worry. Friends don’t put friends in positions of regifting floss. ❤️

@yssie are you sure you didn’t invent Cocofloss, we might have to report you for self-promotion lol!

@tyty333 that is too funny, I’m totally a shower flosser too, it’s the only place I can floss and feel right about it!

For what it's worth, this is what my dentist friends recommend.

Aside from people pressing too hard (you always know when someone does this with any toothbrush as the threads become all bent in all possible directions), an electric toothbrush is just more aggressive in terms of friction. They say what they see in people who only use an electric one is the enamel getting worn out after some years. Using it once a day and a regular toothbrush for the rest of the time is entirely sufficient to keep your teeth clean without causing damage.

I will add one more thing about electric toothbrushes...besides using it on the lowest setting always use the soft brittle brush. And please replace it every 3 months.

Some electric toothbrushes now come with pressure sensors - you'll get a warning alarm when you are brushing too hard.

Maybe we should start comparing toothbrush models so we can see who uses the most advanced model, y’know, given that electric toothbrushes are a proxy to wealth.

I remember during one of the heated political discussions…which I always stayed out of…I mistakenly posted a photo of a pizza that I had just made.. lol Everyone was trying to prove their point and my pizza pops up. It was so embarrassing! My husband and I still laugh about it!

I, too, have now ordered Cocofloss. Thanks, Yssie! I usually use SuperFloss but it doesn't hurt to try something new. :)

I tried it and think it's no different than any other floss I have in the medicine cabinet other than it's pricier.

Mods: Is this OK?!?!

Challenge accepted! I need to try some of this stuff! Maybe it's like edibles and it takes a while for it to kick in... (or so I'm told by my kids.)
