We do both love the ring so much - when I sent an e-mail to my FI, here was his response:

"YOU'RE SELF-CONSCIOUS? NOT ALLOWED.

You are supposed to be happy with it. Just because Dr. Mike failed
miserable at guessing the size of your ring doesn't mean you should be
self-conscious. He's a biologist, not a gemologist. And it probably
looks bigger because it's set a bit high and because the setting is so
beautifully delicate. It looks wonderful on you.

This totally made me smile - such a sweetie! It also helped me feel better - some of the kids in my graduate school class were joking with me about it today and saying that I could take someone's eye out with it if they threatened me, and it somehow made me feel better that it was clearly meant well and not meant to be insulting at all.

I also think my lab director meant well - he is one of the nicest people I know and he was clearly really happy for me. So overall I am back to walking around staring at my hand

ETA: the stone was purchased at and set by my local jeweler.

Congrats, Amber! Beautiful ring (of course I think so -- I have the same one!). What are you doing about a wedding band?

I definitely understand feeling self-conscious and a little guilty when someone notices my ring. As I've gotten older, however, it's gotten better.The reality is: this is your engagement ring and you have every right to have a beautiful, sparkly diamond. It doesn't matter whether you're 22 or 52. You're not less worthy simply because of your age. I hope you continue to enjoy it because it's gorgeous!

Thanks again everyone for the nice comments - especially coming from people with such lovely collections of bling!

I am definitely getting more comfortable wearing my ring, and I have decided that I like the way it looks with jeans (although I may use this as an excuse to at least get some non-ratty jeans and replace some of the really old, faded shirts that don''t fit right...). Its funny how much the ring already feels like a part of my finger - I take it off only to cook/do dishes and to sleep.

I promise I really will post pics of FI''s sapphire stud and watch (his engagement presents), but at the moment the digital camera is out of batteries and I need to find the charger
