My center stone in my e-ring is an uncerted diamond, purchased without any input from me and way before I found PS.

Anyway, I got a new job in February in an office with lots of flourescent lighting. I started noticing a "cloudy" area in the upper left hand corner of my diamond when I turned my hand from side to side.

What could this be? I''ve scrutinized this diamond from all angles and lighting conditions and know it like the back of my hand (well, probably better than the back of my hand) and hadn''t seen this before in the two years I''d worn it.

It''s supposed to be an H VS2, but it is uncerted. I know it''s not a fake because there''s an inclusion that I can see with a loupe from the side and there''s flouresence in bright sunlight.

What could this be? Could I have damaged my diamond somehow? Is it a cleaning issue (although I am very good about that)? It''s driving me crazy.

Thanks for any help.

Perhaps your stone is really an SI-1 or SI-2. It sounds like you are seeing inclusions in your stone. Many SI stones are not "eye clean". You probably just didn''t notice it before. Have you had you diamond appriased from an independent lab? They can evaluate the color and clarity of the diamond and it doesn''t cost very much. I don''t think your diamond was damaged. You could try cleaning your diamond but chances are you will still see the spot. I recently bought a 1.5 ct uncerted diamond myself. The color is Y-Z and the clarity VS2-SI-1. The jeweler said it was a "weak" VS2. I louped the diamond and can only see two tiny black dots to the right side of the stone just off the table and nothing else. My stone could be a VS2. I am taking it to be appraised/evaluated soon at AGA. BTW, how large is your stone? and about what price did you buy it for? The bad thing about buying an uncerted diamond is that you could have overpaid for it.

It's .90. I have no idea how much he paid for it. We were both very poor graduate students at the time and he had 30 bucks left in his checking account after buying it.

I really doubt he spent very much on it.

I don't want to bother getting it certed because I've never been a big fan of this stone, apart from sentimental value, and eventually we will replace it.

I was more concerned that I had done something to it, since I really haven't noticed it before. I had my diamond re-set last June and really scrutinized it after I got it back to make sure it was the same one and you'd think I would have noticed it then.

I can't see it looking straight down at the diamond. I can only see it when I shift it from side to side and noticed that the other side looked different. It's not black at all...just a misty cloud.

It was sweet oh your husband to buy an e-ring even though he was broke.

My husband did the same for me when we got engaged. He bought the best he could for little$$$. It was a .59pt round brilliant E SI1. I was proud to get it! A lab like AGA doesn''t cert a diamond, but rather gives an independent evaluation of it. I am going to get mine done soon because I am afraid of a possible diamond switch if/when I need work done on my ring and because I want to get it insured. It''s probably not worth it to you to get a reportif you will be upgrading eventually. The cloudiness does sound like an inclusion. They are not all black spots. Sometimes they are white spots, lines, and cloudy spots. I always loupe my diamond too.

Potentially has medium to strong fluorescence which is a bit more evident in lighting situations (sun light) you’re speaking of…..

try cleaning it. Sounds to me like you have some sort of film on the stone.

i''ve had the exact same thing happen. i was looking at my stone one day and horrified to find a huge cloud i had never noticed! turns out it was some sort of lotion or film under the stone! you really have to get in there and clean everywhere. i use a teeny tiny little paint brush. hopefully that''s the case with yours.

Yes I have had this cloud before also! I freaked out. I took it right to my jeweler who promptly steamed it. Poof, the cloud was gone. I thought I had done something to my ring. I almost cried over it. My DH had the wisdom to take me and the ring to the jeweler to see what happend to the stone.

Darn that hand cream!
