I just got married on Saturday and my wedding band is a thin plain 14k rose gold band. At least, I think it is. Now I'm a little worried. Today I went through a metal detector and it went off. When the guy scanned me with his hand held detector my belt and ring finger went off. I know it wasn't my white gold engagement ring because I've been through detectors before without that going off. I thought gold wasn't supposed to affect metal detectors. Is there some reason why rose gold would be different? I bought the ring from an etsy seller who claims to use recycled gold materials and now I'm worried it may not be real.

Does anyone have any input?

I've worn my 18K rose gold ring through plenty of metal detectors and it has never gone off. I'm interested to hear what the experts have to say about this!

Best wishes on your wedding!

That is weird. I would ask the Moderators to change your Subject to: Does Gold set off metal detectors? So that maybe the vendors who have experience with this will see it right away.

From what I understand, metal detectors have settings, so it's as much a matter of the machine as the metal. I've read of people wearing Cartier Love bracelets having trouble, but that's a lot more metal mass ... and the major additive in rose gold should be copper, which I wouldn't think would affect things either way. Anything we say will come down to speculation - stop by a jeweler and have them test it for you, it'll take less than five minutes. Fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for all the input. Yeah, I'll have to take it to a jeweler for sure. This is probably a stupid question but, does anyone know if rose gold fill would be able to be tested by a jeweler? The seller also sells jewelry made from gold fill wire and I'm worried it could be that that she gave me. Also, how do I get a moderator to change the subject title? (another stupid question lol)

Hit the "report concern" button on your topic post. :-)

I work for an airline & fly about 8 times per month...
The metal detectors measure cumulatively...meaning it won't go off unless the TOTAL metal that you're wearing is more than the machine's setting (which can be adjusted). So, if you have an underwire bra, rings, belt, etc...the total might be enough to set it off. It's not about each individual piece.
Hope that helps,

thanks BeachgirlG - that's very interesting! I usually do seem to set things off - would glasses add to that cumulative amount?
I would have a bracelet, rings, underwire, zipper on jeans/pants, necklace and earrings... is that enough?

I go through airport metal detectors a few times a week. My rings (platinum or gold) never triggers it. My underwire bras do though :P
