Importance of Cutlet on a Cushion?

I am wondering how important the size of the cutlet is on a cushion. I am looking at a cushion diamond as follows:

Cushion Brilliant
7.64x7.05x4.19
1.70 carat
F
VS2
VG - Polish
VG - Symmetry
Fluor - None
Girdle - Med. to Thick faceted
Cutlet - Large (GIA report, gemologist believes closer to medium)
Table - 59%
Depth - 59.4%
Other Comments - crown angles greater than 40 degrees, additional clouds not shown

The diamond looks great and I like all the other characteristics of the stone, but I have read not to buy something with a large cutlet.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

I believe this is a matter of personal preference. There''s a thread in the SMTR form right now with a cushion that has a medium culet. Myself, I like the look. What do you think?
 
I am buying it online so I have not seen it in person. The picture I received via email looks great but you know how that goes.
 
This is def an issue of personal preference. I personally don''t prefer a large looking culet, to me it can give the effect of a hole in the stone. Someone actually called me an anti-culite in another thread...
That being said, I do understand why some people prefer it bc of the antique look it gives a stone. Keep in mind that the cert grading of this may not be how you really see it. I recently looked at one that was slightly large on the cert, but in person it was barely visible. You really have to see it in person or good pics. The stone I just got has a small culet, but Leon said he would have called it medium... To me it''s just a nice small rectangle in the center.

lloyd, it's a personal preference but having an "open culet", which is what you're referring to, tends to come on those cushions with more of an antique style cut because that's how the old antique stones were cut. The open culet is usually not really noticeable until one gets to a certain size but, if the stone is well cut, it's well cut and an open culet wont take away anything, I know mine certainly doesn't detract from my stone's performance. You can get a really cool effect called the "kozibe effect" and it's when you get reflections of the open culet refracted all around your stone. It's very cool. If you do a search on it, you'll find a bunch of threads with some great photos of that unique phenomenon. You really should look at the different cushions out there at a local B&M just so you can see the difference. It will make buying one online a lot easier for you.

I agree, as everyone has pointed out it''s totally a personal preference. Just one word of advice, don''t read to much into the lab report when it comes to size. The GIE report lists the stone I bought as slightly large, but I would have called it medium when I viewed it in person. Good luck, sounds like a really pretty stone.

cushions are a crazy stone and can vary stone to stone etc. however, just plugging your specs into the search most in the size range, F, VS2''s are priced lower, all 11-12K range.
 
Can you post a picture for us? Sounds like you might be looking at an antique style cushion, which I think happen to look great with a slightly large culet.

Looks like a really pretty stone, and the culet doesn''t look too big to me. I can''t quie tell if it''s very chunky or kinda inbetween... I would check the price again, I didn''t search it out myself, but MrsS knows what she''s talking about...
 
I love the shape of that culet on that stone - it is one of the chunky faceted cushions that I think can handle a little culet action if you''re into it. Looks pretty. Is the stone with a PS vendor?
 
Not sure who PS vendors are. Talking to ERD. $15k was a lot higher than other stones I had looked at but didn''t know if the chunky look cost more as they are harder to find. Thoughts on price?
 
It looks like a very nice stone and the culet does give it that vintagey look...very pretty. ERD is probably the referred to PS vendor as they''re the "go to" folks for cushions around here. FYI, I do remember that when Boston Jeff was looking for an antique style cushion, he mentioned that it was difficult to find the new cuts that look like that so that might account for the extra price.
 
If it''s an ERD-approved stone, I would totally trust Mark & Gary and give that baby a chance. It''s really tough to find a VG/VG antique style cushion in the colorless range, so this is a total score. ERD''s photos often leave much to be desired and the stones are usually way better in person than they are in their photos. I think it''ll be fab in person. For photos of cushions with slightly large culets, check out, Boston_Jeff''s, DMarieLevin''s and Silverlily''s cushions - those are some good examples of cushions with culets that are shaped like the one on your stone.
 
ooooooh, I don''t know much about cushions but I am really diggin the picture of this stone!!!
 
It is an antiquy style cushion and so the open culet is entirely appropriate

Well, you didn''t say it was from Mark before!!! GET IT!! LOL. Having just bought my cushion from him last Monday, I can attest to his eye for these stones. I agree with Pixley about their pics though. When I got a pic of mine from them I immediately made it not an option, bc to be honest, it didn''t look so great. I was in NYC anyway so I went to see it and within 2 secs of holding it I knew it was my stone!! The pic you have is far better than the one I had received of mine. I would trust him. As a matter of fact, we considered not buying our stone (size issue, whole other post), and my BF said that he would totally trust Mark to find exactly what we want and that he would buy it without going back to NYC. So, if the specs meet your criteria,and they look great to me, I would say trust Mark...

I remember this too surfgirl and agree. I would trust Mark 100% on the stone and if it''s the vintage looking cushion your are after looks like this stone is it. I''d trust mark''s eyes over the pics, like others have said, his aren''t always the greatest and it really is difficult to get good pics of cushions or tell much from them. snatch that puppy up if you can. what are you thinking about for the setting?

Sorry... I should have commented on this before! Yes, it is extremely difficult... BostonJeff started a very challenging trend around here with these antique looking cushions. Mark had about a month to look for us, and within a sizable budget and a an whole ct weight to work with... In the end we had one option to pick from with Mark. This was briefly discussed in another thread with Rhino, bc it''s really amazing how difficult these things are to get a hold of...Apparently, there are only a few cutters out there that are recreating this antique look...
If he says he found you one, I would believe him... I can guarantee you that in person it will far surpass its pics!

I would not call it a "good price" but rather a "fair price for a nice stone". $15K is "list" more or less and nice traditional cushions can be found 15-20 back, but they''re often hard to come by. Perfectly reasonable to pay a bit more to get a nice stone and to get what you want. Good size color clarity and outline on this one; I''ve seen "large" culets that look larger than this.
 
I think I saw this stone in person. If it''s the same stone I''m thinking of, it''s stunning! And from what I remember, Mark told me there is a mark-up on these particular type of stones because they are so difficult to find and something about the rough being slightly more.

Ugh...wish there was something new. Going back to take another look at his original recommendation. I''m thinking it still won''t be chunky enough for me though...

wow, that is a gorgeous cushion! i hope there is more supply for them in the future.. they are absolutely beautiful and the type of cushion i prefer, too. i say go for it! in a micro-pave setting, it will be stunning..
