i just read about infinity diamonds which are manmade but GIA certified ! What's the story with this?

AFAIK, Infinity Diamonds, aka Crafted by Infinity, does not deal in man-made diamonds.
The diamonds they cut are fully natural in that they are mined from the earth and not treated in any way.

http://www.infinitydiamonds.be/web/about/

I believe them to be among the best-cut diamonds in the world.
Their founder and Managing Director, Paul Slegers, posts here on Pricescope.

BTW, GIA does not "certify" diamonds.
They grade them.
Even then, the grades are subject to the disclaimer fine print on the back of the report.

Certify and certificate are commonly-abused terms in the diamond world.
The document is called a grading report, not a certificate.

That said, a GIA or AGS report is the best "paper" a diamond can have.

Also GIA will issue a grading report for a synthetic diamond, but those reports are yellow so they are not confused with natural diamonds.

Kenny, thanks for clearing this up. I am new to PS, and when I looked up infinity diamonds, I got a weird webpage about diamonds made from a "carbon footprint" of the customer. It sounded very much like a scam, but then I read that Gia grades them. Won't use certify again! I went onto the site that you provided, and wow, what a difference a correct link makes ! Thanks again.

Google sometimes produces funny results and that may be something that has nothing whatever to do with the Crafted by Infinity folks but I'm sure they would love a link to what you found, whether or not it's something of theirs that's confusing or something else with a similar name.

I did a search on yahoo for "infinity diamonds" and the first listing described the following: "Infinity Diamonds are made from your signature carbon, gathered from a lock of hair. Your personal diamond is the ideal way to celebrate your life and memories." I know what you're talking about, babs23r. I looked beyond this first listing, I saw a listing for another Infinity Diamonds, which looked to be a more traditional diamond company. Interesting.

I saw that too when I googled Infinty Diamonds---the world is full of frauds I guess--

So I feel better now that I wasn't imagining it...... Thanks everyone. Maybe someone from the real infinity diamonds should address this!

There's an Infinity Diamonds that is NOT Crafted by Infinity - I think that is what OP was talking about. I don't know anything about that company.

Apparently they're lab-grown from carbon (as opposed to some other material, like cubic zirconia) so they are considered "real" diamonds. The schtick is that the customer provides some of the carbon material - i.e. a lock of hair - that the lab turns into pure carbon which is then used in the stone. (I'm guessing other carbon material is added in most cases.) So the end result is a "personalized" stone. The white stones can be more expensive than comparable real diamonds, but - yoohoo, Kenny! - you can also get colored diamonds made this way.

Not to be confused with Crafted by Infinity diamonds, of course!
