International Blue Nile upgrades

Hi all, i was wondering if anyone on here has experience with upgrades from Blue Nile and especially non US customers.

My engagement ring is an ideal cut 0.68 I VS1 purchased in 2012 and i am upgrading for our anniversary. The strange thing is that Blue Nile keeps talking dollar prices and exchange rates while i've purchased the diamond in EU on the EU site and will pay in Euro aswell. The original Dollar price they quoted for my stone seems really high en spending double means i am spending way more than double what i paid. They still need to give me an quote for a stone but any UK,AUS, European scorers have experience with this? Do they try to discourage you to upgrade by charging for an exchanger rate while the set price paid was already and fixed euro price?

I'm not familiar with purchasing from BN but I find this odd that they quoted you on your stone. Wouldn't they go off of your original receipt and what you PAID for the stone? Then you have to double that?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding...

Yes, this is what i thought. The Diamond price is paid excluding VAT. Asked a few times because is found a stone i liked and they kept telling me it was not enough. Then they told me i had to go by the dollar price. Really strange.

Hmm..I hope someone else will chime in that has experience. Maybe @rockysalamander could help or would know of someone that can?!

Ahhh crap. I just saw this disclaimer on the BN upgrade program page:

*The Blue Nile Diamond Upgrade Program is available for purchases shipped to the US. Upgrades for other countries may be eligible on a case-by-case basis. Upgrade purchase must be made in original currency. Colored diamonds are ineligible for this program.

It sounds like you're at their mercy :(

No it's definitely an upgrade, they give me 100% of my original purchase value. They just want to use dollar value's including exchange rates while my purchase was made in EURO, so i guess they want to make money out of an non existing exchange rate. Can't really do anything indeed because of the case by case basis thing and i should be happy they let me upgrade.

I'm sorry, that's disappointing. BUT, let's talk about the upgrade diamonds! What are you looking for?

Just curious what your original stone cost and how much they want you to spend now?

Yes, i am very curious off the size but it sure will be bigger.

i paid 1798 euro ex taxes, no special discounts. BN says the stone costs 2342 dollars and have to spend double that amount. Instead of 3596 euro i have to spend 4684 excluding taxes, according to xe.com that is 4017 euro. ex 21% taxes in Holland. Now i am awaiting to see the final offer they come with.

I also noticed the diamond i saved got 400 euro's more expensive in a week, is that normal?

I think prices change on Friday or Saturday each week as new rapaport price lists are released on Thursday.

I guess they want to do everything in USD. That's a bummer but it does make sense. :(2

I still think it's strange since i buy from an euro site. Any fees and exchanges are already taken into account when setting the euro price.

I think the BN model seems to be to give the buyer the advantage of buying in euros when you buy the diamond, but they get the advantage of buy-back in USD -- as they have structured this program. I do feel it should be more explicit to the buyer as, like you, I would assume a Euro-facing website would be buying/selling in euros.

Crafted by Infinity has dealers in two Eurozone countries (Belgium and Finland). You might see if they would be interested in buying your diamond from you. Then, you can buy an CBI diamond and enter into a very reliable and generous upgrade policy after the initial cost over your diamond. So, this upgrade may be into superideal with a small size jump. Then, a future upgrade could be bigger...

If you post the one you liked, maybe we can help you find something similar on BN.

Thank you, the stone is om hold for me until the finalized their offer so i can not view it at this time.

The answer is simple. Back in 2012 the EUR-USD exchange rate was approximate 1.3
This means you paid EXCELLENT price buying in Euro, because you paid LESS money in Euro.
The current EUR-USD exchange rate is approximate 1.15
If you have to buy the SAME diamond today, it will cost you approximate 2000EUR. Buying this diamond in 2012, you saved 200EUR.
THIS SITUATION WORKS IN YOUR FAVOR!
I would advise you to follow the BN requirements about this diamond trade. BN calculate it right.

Based on the BN upgrade policy language quoted in a post above (maybe 4th post from the top??), saying "Upgrade purchase must be made in original currency," if your order/invoice/payment of your original diamond was all in Euros (and not converted from USD), then I'd follow up with BN and point out their own policy language to them and remind them your original purchase was in Euros... first, though, doublecheck the upgrade policy on the BN website you use and confirm it has the same language. Then request BN follow their published upgrade policy.

There was never any exchange rate used. I orderd on the Dutch Blue Nile site where all prices were already fixed euro prices.

yes i did this but they say my new payment will be made in euro but they still want to use dollar amounts to calculate, even though the stone will be send to Dublin for the exchange. I've been in contact with them for two weeks and it keeps getting weirder. After my last call i get an email to agree with the terms and after that they will send me a return slip.... but i never heard the total price including a new setting.

There is an internal (invisible for visitors) exchange rate, customers only see the EUR price. It's integrated web script, it gets customer IP location and shows the prices in local currency. The EU low obligate the prices to be in EUR. However, in the BN archive data base the diamond price is in USD.

I wanted to give an update. All calculations were strictly done in euro, only the determining of the amount needed to be spent was set in dollars. My old ring will be picked up shorty and then the waiting begins :)

Here is my old ring, size 9.
