What is the difference between invisible and channel settings? I understand invisible settings are often used to hold princess cut diamonds in multiple rows, whereas channel settings are in one row. Is this the main distinguishing factor?

Here's a good link that describes the different settings

ETA: I've been told that invisible settings aren't very secure because the diamonds fit together like pieces of a puzzle, if one falls out, they can all fall out. I'm not an expert so I'm not sure if that is in fact true, but I would ask a jeweler or other professional about the security of that type of setting if I was considering it.

That''s what I''ve heard. I''m not considering invisible settings, but I''m just curious in an academic way how they differ from channel sets. Would you ever see "channel set" princess stones set 2 per row, or would you ever see "invisible set" princess stones set in a single row the way channel sets are normally seen? Do they both have the holes on the underside of the shank?

the way it's held is different.

you'll never see a single row illusion, because it's pointless.

I''ve never seen two rows of diamonds between channel rails. I guess you could put one row of princess diamonds next to each other and have them still be channel set on the top and bottom. Cleaning holes in the inside of the shank are a design feature of a ring and as such can be included or not at the designers discretion. I would think that channel set diamonds most likely would have holes underneath for cleaning. Invisible settings I would think maybe not as you might accidentally punch out a stone in the "puzzle", but I really don''t know.

I''m not a jeweler nor do I have any jewelry making experience. Hopefully someone who does will answer you.

I have an old yellow gold ring with a princess cut center stone and ruby baguette accents. Down each side it has two rows of small invisible set princess cut diamonds set inside channels. There are holes underneath for cleaning. I''ve had it for years and never had a problem with losing a stone.
