Hi all. So my partner and I have procured a beautiful center stone which we saw today in person at our jeweler’s showroom. Partner selected a setting while I browsed bands, and he let me know afterwards that he requested it be 1.8 mm. I had told him general parameters for the setting but he wanted to make the final choice and surprise me, and one of the parameters I gave him was I liked bands between 1.8 and 2.3 width. However, now I’m a bit concerned that 1.8 will be dangerously thin. I love my stone so much, never plan to upgrade it, and would be devastated to lose it.
After some research online, including this board, it appears to me that the general wisdom is that this is not a binary issue, as in, a certain width is not safe or unsafe just by virtue of millimeters, but rather it’s contextual to the specific setting and treatment. I’m curious how risky you all would find a 1.8 mm in my case, so here is some relevant context:
- As mentioned, the stone is 2.5 carats.
- The ring will not have pave on the band.
- I plan to wear the ring very often, only remove for showers, working out, and sleeping.
- I don’t really work with my hands (unless you count typing up endless emails!)
- The jeweler is very legit and universally well-regarded, so I assume that he is taking structural integrity into account, though obviously two good people can have differing opinions on structural integrity.
- I do not want to feel stress and pressure to baby my ring, but I don’t think I’m particularly hard on my jewelry.
- Once I’m married I plan to only wear this ring next to a 2-3mm band.
- Setting is platinum.
I’m contemplating asking partner to either ask for 2mm, or at least confirm with the jeweler that 2mm would not be game-changing-ly stronger than 1.8mm… I would not want to go over 2.2 max, and would prefer 2.0 or less, visually.
Penny for your thoughts?
And as a reward for making it through my novela, here is a pic of my gorgeous 2.5, VS1, E beauty (please don’t judge my weird nail polish, I was going for something that didn’t quite work out, haha):
