Hello! I am a longtime lurker who finally decided to make an account to get your opinions on this.

My boyfriend and I have been looking at e-rings and he wants me to decide between a few different stones, once decided they will be set in six prong solitaire. All are round brilliant stones. My choices are:

2.56 Ct. VS2 F Excellent cut
2.03 Ct. VVS1 F Excellent cut
2.85 Ct SI1 H excellent cut

I am tempted to go with the biggest stone, you cannot see the inclusions it is totally eye clean.

We are both 28 years old, working professionals. We won’t be the first, but will be among the first of our friends engaged. The stone is bigger than most of my friends, but not absurdly so. We’re both working professionals. My question is is 2.85 carats too big? Would you look at someone our age and assume it’s fake?

Thanks in advance for the opinions!!

Here on PS, most folks are more concerned with cut quality vs. size since a well cut diamond will appear brighter and oftentimes bigger than a poorly cut one. Can you post the lab reports for these diamonds?

I can ask my boyfriend to send them to me!

Size is up to the person.

Many people buy diamonds and upgrade in size. Some go smaller and realize the stone is not good for their lifestyle or it's too much.

Have you tried on multiple stones? Did it feel too large or too much? Only you can answer that question.

I don't think it's a matter of what someone might think is fake. It is what you would actually comfortably wear on a daily basis. In my metro area, that's quite big FWIW.

I'm interested in seeing that size on your finger (what size is your finger), because 2.8 ct is what I'm upgrading to for our 20th anniversary. I do plan on keeping my current 1.8 ct, in case I find that the 2.8 is too much for certain occasions.

The reports are important, because cut is what most of us agree is the biggest factor in how good/sparkly/lively a diamond looks

That makes sense! I know all 3 stones are graded as “Excellent” cut on the GIA scale. We have been told not to go with anything lower than that for cut.

If we go with that one when it is finished I can definitely share a picture :) I have a size 6 finger!

Unfortunately gia XXX isn't enough to guarantee an excellent performing stone. Some GIA xxx are great, and others are pretty awful. The gia range for what gets an 'X' grade is enormous (unfortunately).

I don't think that the 2.8ct would be too big and I wouldn't worry about what other people think! Ultimately as others said, it will depend on the cut. You can check the HCA score with dimensions and/or a GIA number. You'll also want to check to see if there is florescence.

NO, I have a similar sized finger and I definitely don’t think it’ll be too big, it’ll be a great size with a great presence, but only you can decide If you feel comfortable with the size.

My ring size is 3.5, 5'4" and I would totally wear 2.8ct - amd wouldn't think twice about it being too big. Right now I have 2.13ct but we are already saving up to get 2.6ct.

Does it really matter what others may think if your ring could be fake?

You know it is not, and that's what truly matters.

If you can afford it, and like that size, then go for it. I am confident that you have worked hard to gain your professional qualifications, so why not treat yourself to something nice?

DK :))

Good to know thank you! I probably should add that we are in a unique situation with a family friend in the diamond business and I trust him to steer us in the right direction on a well cut ring at a fair price :)

Your replies have all been so helpful!! Thank you so much!

I am only going to voice an opinion your size question. If you can afford it and this is the size you want, you love the stone and you love how it looks on your finger, no it is not to big.

Enjoy this wonderful time in your life and make wonderful memories with your fiancé.

Congratulations on your engagement. Finding the right person is and always will be the most important thing. The ring is the icing on the cake.

May be to give discussion a slightly different twist. While we do not know how the stones are cut, and that could change priorities, but judging from the other CS, I love how balanced they are in the 1st stone. Very high color, high clarity and weight above 2.5ct. CHECK, CHECK, CHECK.

Also which the different between 2.8+ and 2.5+ plus might be visible to careful observer and ideally in comparison, the lack of color and inclusions will always be a huge plus. (all that said, of course specific stones should be inspected for cut and also for eye-clarity. There are some unlucky examples when VS stone might end up being less eye clean than a lucky SI stone)

Whatever stone you get, there will be a lot of hubbub about it when you first sport it! The attention can feel nice but also weird sometimes :)

But what I like about these bigger size stone options, is that on PS they often suggest “buy the last stone FIRST” lol. So many of us (myself included) upgrade as the years go by... it is not usually the best way to spend haha with money lost along the way sometimes...

So I say to you- what ring do you want to wear when you’re 45? Buy it now! Enjoy the heck out of it! Let friends admire and be jealous and try it on :)

And congrats on finding your loved one <3333

This is a pretty small data set and probably dumb to base any decisions on but I'll throw it out there anyway for the sake of this discussion. I think stone size is super personal and totally dependent on your finger size and the look you're going for, but if you're specifically worried about how the size might appear to your peers and how people might judge you (though I agree with other posters that this shouldn't matter), I can provide some (admittedly pretty silly) anecdotal evidence. My social circle consists of primarily working professionals (doctors, lawyers, bankers, managerial level tech professionals) in metropolitan American cities around your age (give or take literally a year or two). Some of my friends who recently got engaged received or bought stones in a range from 2-3 carats. One of my male friends who most recently got engaged bought his fiance a beautiful 2.83 round stone. No one has mentioned anything other than how beautiful it is and how happy she looks wearing it, which is all to say, people who love you won't give a hoot so long as YOU are happy!

Thanks @MRBXXXFVVS1 and @bibliotheque_ that describes our social circle as well! I think given the rest of the specs we will likely go with the 2.8. The jeweler we are working with has indicated that he prefers it over the other two as well.!

Around here, 2.85, while it isn't small, isn't too large either. If you go on other sites that rhyme with "sleddingbee" you would have some people tell you that at that size they would think it's a diamond simulant.

The point is it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks - not your friends, your parents or your next-door neighbor - all that matters is if you like how it looks.
