Is a 2mm silver chain too thin for men?

I'm looking to get my brother a silver chain necklace with a very small religious medal. It only comes with a 2mm chain and the medal is circular and about 1/3 of a dime in size. It's going to be mostly hidden with only a bit of the back chain showing.

Do you guys think that should look fine on him? He's 5'8" with an average build.

I'd say it depends on the man.
When it comes to being concerned about the possibility of being perceived as even a little feminine men can vary, quite a bit.
Even though I'm an openly gay man wearing a substantial and sparkly diamond ring, I still avoid many things I perceive as too feminine for my taste, like wearing an earring.
We're all individuals when it comes to this.

Kudos to you for thinking twice, and asking, before buying the chain.
Since I don't know your brother I wouldn't make a call on this.
It's always sad when we select a gift for someone without knowing about what could be of a strong personal preference; then we wonder why they don't wear it, or pull it out when they are going to be with us.

I'd ask his friends and other family members about this.

Agree with Kenny 100%…and would like to piggyback on his insights.

It is incredibly variable.

I am very much a straight man and have zero qualms wearing just about anything - IF I love it.

I’ve been known to wear women’s rings on my pinky from time-to-time and can pull it off, but there is a trick: you have to own it…and frankly just rock it.

If you wear something that makes you FEEL feminine, that’s a different story. That will change how you carry yourself…and the whole thing falls apart.

In a way, that’s what jewelry is all about. Ultimately it's about about what it means to us and how wearing it makes us feel.

How a given chain would feel around your brother's neck is pretty hard to gauge without his direct input.

…oh, and beyond the thickness of the chain, the style of chain can impart a different feel as well.

Just food for thought.

What kind of chain is it? Some 2mm chains look more substantial than other 2mm chains. I think 2mm can be a little
thin for a guy's chain but it depends on the chain type.

Love it! Thank you for the search recommendation.

Apparently it’s also called genderpunk…I dig the term.

Is he an adult? Is this consistent with jewelry that he wears -- or would this be a first foray into jewelry for him? Is this an item that is generally styled like this or is it a petite version of something that is often more substantial (like a cross)?

Probably too petite for my taste as a tall, unpierced, uninked (and un-young) straight man who is not overly secure in his masculinity. :cool2:

I got it. Thanks for your answer.

I did the same for my bro, got him a small-ish Belcher chain with a simple cross. The chain matched the cross in proportions. He is not used to wearing jewellery and already "complained" he is not used to it, imagine having gifted him something substantial...

I think the only chain that looks a feminine is the loose type rope with diamond cut patterns that sparkle( not the normal rope), the flat and wide snakes or Bismark models.
IMO as long as the chain is something more simple like a medieval style (Belcher is medieval style btw.) or flat links, it's fine. Round snake chains are cool too and oxidized brushed styles are awesome.

HI:

Does he wear any jewellery? Would he want this?

cheers--Sharon

Make sure the pendant shows a religious image that your brother will like
