Hi, PSers:
I have a problem. I was so impressed with the Asscher that Jeff White cut recently that I asked if he could cut an aquamarine for me. He found a beautiful stone and is ready to proceed. The problem is this....I thought a 3-4 ct for a ring would be beautiful but he says that the stone could yield a 5-7ct gem. 5 to 7ct is 10-11mm! That seems huge to me. Should I go for the "greed" and have him cut the larger stone or stick with the original plan? I have a 2.78 ct Heliodor that I had make into a ring recently and that baby looks and feels enormous. I have big hands and can accommodate a large stone, but is 5-7ct too big for a ring? Would I have to take up weightlifting? Does anyone have pictures of a 5-7ct ring? Any ideas would be appreciated. Sundragon

WoW! 10 mm is mighty big. A pendant would be nice but it may end up tacky looking for a ring. Stick to your guns unless you know you can pull this look off. I just took out my ruler and drew out a 10 mm x 5 mm square (assuming an emerald shape) on a piece of paper and it's still pretty huge.

That''s pretty darn big. It would honestly be bordering on tacky IMO. I''d stick with the original plan! Sounds gorgeous!

Actually, I don''t think a 5-7ct, 10-11mm aqua is too big. A diamond that size might be a bit much...but wouldn''t kick it out of my bed!

For reference, here''s a hand shot of an 8ct aqua from Fay Cullen, 14x9mm. Yours would be shorter and fatter.

I think it would be okay, but here''s what I''ve been doing to check- I ordered a catalog from a lab grown diamond site because inside there is an amazing chart- it has I think 12 different shapes of stones, and shows each at sizes ranging from .25-8 carats, and you can look either by mm or ct. size. I find a stone I like, then find the closest relation on the chart, and cut it out for reference! I think you can find similar charts online, I think the natural sapphire company has one....

Lots of food for thought. The chart is a great idea. I will go looking for that chart. The ring from Fay Cullen looks beautiful. Hand shots really are helpful. If I go with the smaller stone I could always have some other things cut later, perhaps. Sundragon

Pinkdreamer, I couldn''t find the chart you described. I have a diamond chart. That might help some.
Another question........are Asschers ever put in a bezel mounting? Would it obscure their beauty? Have you ever seen really large stones in bezel settings for rings? Sundragon

Lauren the Partier has her asscher bezeled: see her avatar. I think it looks great.

Here's a 2.26 carat bezeled asscher in a halo (CAD rendition courtesy of GOG):

I can''t find it either... I will check when I get home tonight where it came from. It might have been a diamond one, which I realize is a little different, but it still gives you some idea.

Chrono, that stone is amazing! You''ve got me on an asscher kick

I have a very similar-sized aquamarine ring that I wear and it is not too large at all. My finger size is 5.5

HI:

I wear a 22ct. aquamarine on my 6.5 fingert that bought from an Estate--and I absolutely love it. It is the one ring I get the most compliments on, more than any other in my collection. But, acknowledged, it is not for everyone. So in answer to your question, IMHO do not think a 5-7 ct. aquamarine would be either too large or distasteful. Have you tried on other colored stones of this size to give you a reference?

cheers--Sharon

I have a 19 ct aqua ring that is absolutely gorgeous. I also have a 29 ct aqua ring that it''s too much, even for my 12.5 finger. One day perhaps I will reset it into a pendant.
I love the aaschers btw, but I have my heart set on a cushion cut paparadacha (sp?) or morganite for my next ring

Chrono, what a beautiful ring. Gees guys I just can''t make up my mind. I guess I will just have to make a decision, some decision, any decision...........Maybe I''ll base it on "comfort." I will have to have the ring made with a wide band because I have big knuckles and waisted fingers. Having a wide band is the only way I have found to keep stones from swinging around and driving me crazy. Is there any other remedy? Sundragon

Sundragon-

I am on the hunt for either a red or green gemstone, and I had a spess garnet sent to me that was 5.5mm by 10mm (2.37 carat) and I sent it back because it was too small.....here''s a link to it: http://www.customgemstones.com/GARNET/ga887.html

I am now considering a larger congo tourmaline and a rhodalite garnet...I have the garnet in possession and am waiting for the tourmaline to arrive so I can compare the two and make my decision. IMO, with larger hands, 5-7 carats is about perfect. I say go for it!

FYI. my ring size is 4.75

Hey guys, Has anyone seen this page of Asschers on Diamonds by Lauren? Check it out. It''s a bit too much for me but aren''t the Asschers beautiful? Sundragon
