Is it OK to wear a diamond ring ALL the time??

I wear mine 24/7, including when I''m working in my saltwater tanks, when I''m working in and on my outdoor ponds (including heavy rockwork) and when I''m gardening. Yes, it''s insured and I clean it often.

I''m curious -- why do so many of you take it off to shower????

Sue

I wear mine 24/7 except for the days when I swell up like a blow-fish!

Damn hormones!!! Bling and bloated sausages for fingers is not a great look

I don't wear mine often for a multitude of reasons - a main one is that it's currently set in white gold, and as I have become allergic to nickel, I wear it only on special occassions so as to not wear off the rhodium too quickly (daily wear, which includes lab work, wore of the rhodium in 2-3 months). I hope when I save enough money to reset the diamond in platinum/palladium I will wear it more often again (DH does too!).

Even then, I'll take it off when exercising (my hands swell a LOT when I am active) and showering - that's when I clean it!

I have a really bad habit of leaving stuff around, or at least I used to. When we first got engaged I always took it off to shower or wash my hands but I would leave it laying around and my husband would take it and hide it from me. I guess he was trying to prove a point.

So I basically only take it off for cleaning and serious messy cooking.

So I go to the gym almost everyday and workout with free weights. I would be afraid to wear it during any training for fear of scratching the metal and discomfort but at the same time I would want to wear something on my finger to symbolize marriage. I dont think a necklace w/ my ER would be an option because I wouldn''t be able to stand it clanging against my chest. My BF also requested that I don''t wear my future bling to the gym because he fears it would get damaged.

Out of experience, I did wear my first ER to the gym everyday and the metal (platinum) was destroyed!! SO whats the option??? I see all the girls wearing their rings but my future bling is (according to some close sources

, not one to wear to the gym. What does one do? DO I get a "gym ring"?? Is that ridiculous?? I''ve sincerely considered it! Am I crazy???

I wear mine every day, but I also got in the habit of taking it off when I get home every night. I don''t wear my ring when I exercise because my fingers tend to swell during exercise and I really don''t like the look and feel of "bling and sausage".

I do have insurance with a $0 deductible, but I still don''t sleep, shower, clean, lift, or sport with it. In my opinion having such a precious gift means I need to be aware of it in the back of my mind most all the time. Obviously I can''t do that when I sleep and the other activities are just physically hazardous to it.

The insurance does give me a financial state of peace, but I still don''t ever want anything to happen to the ring because I just love it and there will probably never be another one like it. So I''m very mindful of how quickly I''m moving my left hand, where I am, and any potential hazards. I am extremely careful on top of having insurance. And I NEVER leave it anywhere except its home: my jewelry box and soon to be 200 lb. anchored safe.

There have been times when I''ve walked into the bathroom for a shower and turned right around to go put it in its box because I forgot. I am militant about it only existing either on my hand or in its home. The one time I did fall asleep with it on I saw that the delicate prongs had caught some fibers from my blanket. Although, sleeping with it on doesn''t concern me too much because I don''t sleep walk. I still get plenty of enjoyment out of it despite not wearing it constantly. I also examine it daily to monitor its condition.

Wow - I am going to be much more meticulous with my new setting when I get it - you''ve now all got me very paranoid! I can''t believe how rough I was with mine - ponding, fishtanks, at the gym, cleaning, etc. I never took it off! And in spite of all the activities I did with it the separation of one side of the cathedral from the prong occurred when I was drying my hands and my ring after washing my hands. I heard a "pop" and checked the ring and there was the slight separation. The stone itself was still secure but I obviously got it off right away and took it to my jeweler.

Anyway, I will definitely treat the new one with much more respect, but I''m still not clear why people remove them in the shower? What damage is occuring there????

I''m one of those who removes my rings (except for my w-ring) as soon as I come home. However, when I have been in a position where I''ve had my rings on prior to taking a shower I *still* take them off first for two reasons: 1) the heads catch in my hair when I''m washing my hair which is annoying and 2) I just don''t like getting soap gunk and conditioner on my rings.

I don't wear my ring for cleaning, showering, cooking, sleeping, gardening or any activities that I consider messy or potentially damaging. That being said, I do wear my ring much of the time--even at home. I still love to look at it in different lighting conditions and watch the fire it produces.

ETA: Yes, it is insured!

24/7

I am surprised how many 24/7 wearers there are. I take all my rings and jewelry off as soon as I get home!

Showering I used to wear my ring 24/7 but the shower deposits a tonne of gunk under ther pavilion that is hard to clean off. I have an US and clean my ring regularly, but could not keep up with the shower soap gunk

Sue777 If you like wearing your rings all the time then wear them all the time! Who cares what we all do, lots of people never take theirs off and just maintain the rings if anything happens.

I usually wear mine in the shower, but I often wish I''d stuck them in the cleaner and taken them off... after I''m in the shower of course

The soap and conditioner and water tend to make my rings, which are loose, even looser and so I spend the whole time struggling to keep them on my finger. It''s less of a hassle in the bath, at least- since we got the Super Deep Awesome Jacuzzi Tub (which I adore and would marry if I could, and I''m fully capable of pickling myself in it for hours at at time) I don''t shower much. I dunno why they don''t get as loose and spinny in the bath- I guess for most of the time I''m reading whilst marinating in the tub, and my ring hand is out of the water anyway. I use a pretty heavy duty conditioner and I don''t find that my ring is particularly dirty after I use it- I suspect I don''t usually get the conditioner actually on the stone or under it.

But yeah- totally 24/7 for me. As an inveterate loser of things, I would be a hazard if I got in the habit of taking my ring off for much of anything except cleaning it.

I think the reason I never take my ER ring off is because the stone is set so high on four prongs, it''s really easy to clean. However, when I decide on and receive my new halo setting, it may be a lot more intricate and more prone to collecting "gunk" and possibly harder to clean. Guess I''ll decide when the time comes, but it''s fun to hear what everyone else''s habits are.

The primary reason I take off the rings is for comfort. For the 24/7 wearers, are your erings really comfortable?

I really don''t wear mine 24/7. I do take it off during cleaning and some excercise, and messy cooking. I also don''t shower in it, or sleep in it. But other than that, I wear it all the time.

People here in Colorado don’t do a lot of frolicking in the ocean but salt water won’t hurt your diamond, gold or platinum. I would avoid taking silver into the ocean. I would also be careful if it’s loose enough that it might come off. Your hands can change in size and get slippery in water and if it comes off in the ocean, it’s unlikely you’ll find it again.

I would recommend taking it off at the gym if your routine involves weight lifting. It won’t hurt the diamond but the bar can bend and dent up the metal and it can give you calluses on you palm that you probably won’t care for.

my band is pretty narrow and channel set and the e-ring has a narrow knife edge shank so yes--i dont really feel them

I wear mine when I''m going out of the house, and will leave it on until I go to sleep when I always take it off. I don''t shower with it on or do dish-washing. I will wear it working out because I pretty much only do yoga and the treadmill... I don''t use weights or anything requiring much use of my hands, etc.
