Is my diamond set too high?

Hello all, fairly new to all of this, so would appreciate all the help and comments I can get!

I've recently received my order of engagement ring from James Allen, which is a nice simple little solitaire ring with an oval diamond center, nothing too complicated as that's how my girlfriend would prefer it (or at least i believe so)!

Aesthetically, I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out and thought James Allen did a good job with the workmanship. That is, until i noticed that my diamond seems to be sitting a little high? Like there's too much gap and spacing between the diamond / pavilion to the prongs / gallery, kind of like it's floating in mid-air. Have attached some pictures to show how it looks:

Now again, visually I quite like how everything looks, and i felt that maybe being set this high helps the center diamond pops and stand out a bit more too. But noticing this had me wondering if this should be any cause for concern in terms of its durability in the long run, such that I should send it back to JA to be reworked? Would the diamond be considered to be more "unstable" and prone to falling out in cases like this? Following suggestions to check whether the diamond is held tightly by the prongs (using my fingernails to gently prod the side of the diamond), currently it still seems to be lodged very firmly in place.

Any ideas from you experienced folks? Or would this actually be something that's fairly common with solitaires? I would be interested to see similar pictures from you guys to compare against my ring! Let me know if the photo / angles aren't clear enough and i'll try to get better ones!

Visually, it is set too high IMO (personal opinion). As long as it is seated well in the prongs I don't think it should be a durability issue.

Looks perfect to me. Not too high. But if it bothers you then by all means get it lowered.

It could physically go just a tad lower but I don't think it looks obviously too high. You want some space there to allow it to be easily cleaned and not catch gunk. ;))

It looks perfect to me.

There’s no one right answer. As long as it’s safely secure in the setting the rest is personal preference. Comes down to your aesthetics. Which do you prefer? Higher or lower or something in between?

It's a little high for me personally but think in part that is due to the style of the head.

I love it! What setting is it?

Not bothering me at all visually, in fact I do appreciate it cause like i mentioned, i thought it helps make the stone stand out a little more. But it's all down to personal preferences like you all say i guess!

Was just wondering if this would make it less durable, but seems like what I'm hearing here is that as long as the prongs are currently holding the stone well (which i believe it is, as it isn't rocking upon prodding), then being set this high shouldn't make it less durable? All good then, this gives me more assurances to enjoy my purchase, thanks everyone for your comments!

It's JA's 4-prongs comfort fit Solitaire (1.5mm), in 14k yellow gold. In hindsight, I should have went with the setting with claw prongs for the flush fit with the future wedding band, but thankfully i still love how this turned out at least!

For me personally, it would be too high.

However, each to their own.

DK :))

From your pictures it looks slightly high but in reality it’s probably not as noticeable. It’s a gorgeous, classic ring!

for me, i think the setting is a little too high.

there are 2 parts to this that i see:
1) the diamond is set a little too high. i would have liked the diamond to sit a bit lower.
2) the head of the ring is best i can describe it. the white metal part looks a little high as well. the whole head could be lowered by 1-2mm- just by eyeballing it.

perhaps by lowering the diamond setting, it may take care of the 2nd issue that i feel it has.

I like high set stones. That to me is perfect. But if YOU are not comfortable with it, have it redone.

ANY idea on wedding band? My u-prong eternity is higher than my solitaire and I think with your ring the sense of “too high” would disappear. Just my 2 cents.

It's set a little high for my preferences. But my concern is that that style of 4 prong head doesn't offer the best security for the diamond. If you bend one prong just enough, the diamond can tilt and scoot out of there. I have done that, but I am hard on my "daily driver" ring(s). I would choose either a heavier weight 4 prong head, or switch to a 6 prong head. The problem I've had with the 6 prong version of that type of stamped head is the base of the prongs at 12 o'clock and o'clock positions have a point that dug into my finger. If you stay with 4 prongs, I'd recommend a different head, something in the weight of the Stuller Solstice. https://www.pricescope.com/community/data/attachments/18/18431-974031abbbbe9c42144fee66efd5fdad.jpg Or one that has a round support ring under the girdle of the diamond, but that might mean changing the whole ring to one with an integrated head. But with 4 prongs, you want the head to be one that's it's difficult to get a prong splayed out on.

The profile view looks perfect to me IMO.

What a lovely ring! Height is such a personal preference.
After your proposal, you could ask her what her feelings are in this regard. I hope you come back with some hand shots!

That's a good point. Haven't really got started on the wedding bands at all yet actually, was thinking it'd be an involved process on that one. I believe she'll want it simple so maybe all she will have in mind is a simple gold band, nothing wrong with that of course but ideally I'd have us go down to some of our local jewelers and try out the bands in person to at least open her up to some other options like half / full eternity, just to get her thoughts and see how they look on her with the engagement ring.

Thanks for your thoughts, might just look into that when we head down to a local jeweler in the future, see what we can do!

It’s a bit too high for me, but I prefer low-set rings. I think @Bonfire’s suggestion to ask her after the proposal is the way to go!

Thanks for commenting, and I'd agree! I do like how it looks right now, but ultimately her opinions on it would far outweigh mine since it is for her after all, so let's see what she thinks after seeing the ring herself :D
