Is there a combination of X and V prongs for princess cut?

Hello everybody,

I plan to buy my wife a 1 ct princess cut diamond ring. Thankfully to this forum I have almost made my mind regarding the stone (1 ct, H, VS2). Setting, however, is a different story. I want to get her a simple solitaire, but am not sure about the style of prongs. I mean, I like V-prongs for their rectangular appearance (as viewed from the top of the stone), but dislike them for their "bulkiness" (if looked from the side, they cover a substantial part of the stone). Also it looks as if with V-prongs the stone sits higher on the ring (which I do not like) than with any other ones.

On the other hand, X-prongs look more elaborate and less "bulky" on the sides (they appear to cover less of the stone than V-prongs). It also looks as if with X-prongs the stone sits lower on the ring. So it sticks out less and has lesser chance of being lost or damaged during accidental impact. I very much like all those factors. However, what I do not like about X-prongs is their round shape. I believe that shape looks OK with round diamonds but not with rectangular princess cut.

So, my question is: Is there a combination of X and V prongs? I mean, I like everything about X-prongs but the fact that they are round. Is there a ring design that would have those two merged (X-prongs-style ring with prongs themselves being of the "V" shape)?

Thank you in advance.

I like the W style but maybe that's what you mean by X?

This is what I mean by X-prongs:

and V-prongs:

As you can see (at least that's how it looks to me), V-prongs setting appears to be a bit "bulkier" than X-one (when viewed from the side). The diamond sticks out more and there is too much gold (well, technically, it should be platinum) on all sides of the stone, which leaves, probably, only half of its surface visible.

On the other hand, X-prong setting appears to be much more elaborate and delicate. The stone doesn't stick out from the ring (at least, visually) as much as with V-prongs. I like this type of setting (X-one) very much with the exception of the shape of prongs themselves. I think round prongs look somewhat blunt when used with the princess cut (especially when the ring is viewed from the top). Geometrically, rectangular V-prongs, in my opinion, are a much better match for a square stone (such as princess).

Hence, the original question: is there some combination of V and X-prongs setting? If so, can someone recommend a company that sells it. By "combination" I essentially mean X-prong type of the ring with prongs themselves shaped like "V".

Have you checked WF page on prong styles? http://www.whiteflash.com/about-diamonds/news/what-could-go-prong-choosing-a-solitaire-setting-778.htm

That will give you an idea for the variety of prong styles. Sorry I can't comment on what's best for princess cuts. I like the W style but maybe that's what you mean by X?

If you visit the page I included, you can decide for yourself if there's a variation that appeals to you. In my opinion, either the W or fishtail prong setting are a combo of the V and X.

You see, both W and fishtail prongs look round-ish, when the diamond is viewed from the top of the ring. In that sense they are no different than X ones. Again, I very much like the X setting. Just wish the prongs could be somewhat flattened and bent rectangularly (may be even not for entire length but only at upper tips).

You could ask them if they will custom make it for you.
