Hello everybody,
I plan to buy my wife a 1 ct princess cut diamond ring. Thankfully to this forum I have almost made my mind regarding the stone (1 ct, H, VS2). Setting, however, is a different story. I want to get her a simple solitaire, but am not sure about the style of prongs. I mean, I like V-prongs for their rectangular appearance (as viewed from the top of the stone), but dislike them for their "bulkiness" (if looked from the side, they cover a substantial part of the stone). Also it looks as if with V-prongs the stone sits higher on the ring (which I do not like) than with any other ones.
On the other hand, X-prongs look more elaborate and less "bulky" on the sides (they appear to cover less of the stone than V-prongs). It also looks as if with X-prongs the stone sits lower on the ring. So it sticks out less and has lesser chance of being lost or damaged during accidental impact. I very much like all those factors. However, what I do not like about X-prongs is their round shape. I believe that shape looks OK with round diamonds but not with rectangular princess cut.
So, my question is: Is there a combination of X and V prongs? I mean, I like everything about X-prongs but the fact that they are round. Is there a ring design that would have those two merged (X-prongs-style ring with prongs themselves being of the "V" shape)?
Thank you in advance.
