I am waiting on quotes for a ring I would like made BUT I am not sure how it will look when done. Its not a standard design--is there anything out there that I can do myself to pre-view a basic design? I dont want to waste the vendors time if what I want isnt going to come out weird.

Rhino may be a bit spendy for what you want. You could try MOI which costs a couple hundred dollars: MOI
Google's plain version of SketchUp is free and can be had here: SketchUp

I use Rhino, but have heard good things about both MOI and SketchUp. In MOI you're working with NURB's surfaces just as you are in Rhino so transferring files is easy to do, should you want to download your work to whomever will be making your piece. Some things are easier to do by just drawing a sketch and asking someone if it will work. Remember when designing jewelry that you have to make the parts so that they can be cast, (assuming that you're planning on having it cast and not hand made). This means that they have to be thick enough to not only cast, but to hold up in use. It's very easy to spend a lot of time drawing something that can't be made or that will collapse the first time you bump it of grab something hard. If you run into a brick wall, drop me a line, maybe I can help out.

Rhino has free evaluation for 25 saves. As long as you do not safe over that it is free.

The first link on the download page.
