Is this a good quality purple sapphire?

I do not know too much about sapphires. I have tried to do some research on the net and have looked at pricescope for a couple of months now. I am currently looking for a 2 carat purple sapphire for the centre stone of my future e-ring. I want to set it in the tiffany legacy style setting. So I am looking for a cushion cut purple sapphire.

I have been looking on The Natural Sapphire Company for a purple sapphire, because they also have the setting I would like. I would appreciate if you guys could help me figure out if this stone is any good. Does it have a large window? Will it close when it is set? Please give me your advice.

Here is a link to the sapphire

The colour is pretty but yes, it has a medium sized window. The stone is too shallow to close up with a retouch (recut) of the pavilion as well at only 58% total depth. I don't know if the window can be "closed up" in a setting. The other issue is that if you try, the colour might darken too much in an enclosed setting so you could be trading one problem for another.

That said, and as usual I agree with Chrono, if accurate the color is very pretty and the price is good for a 2+ carat untreated purple sapphire. I bolded that part because there have been multiple folks who have bought from them and not been happy with their stone, and have felt that the color was sufficiently different than the photos to warrant returning it. I would also make sure that the stone is completely untreated as they state.

Is the setting design alike to the Tiffany Legacy? I've seen quite a few "knock-offs" (for lack of a better word sold) elsewhere, so don't feel tied down to NSC just for the setting alone.

I am a poor reader today - it IS a Tiffany Legacy inspired ring as stated in the original post.

Thanks for replying. I am not dead set on having my stone come from NSC, I have looked at other sites, but have trouble finding a 2 carat square cushion cut purple sapphire. Also, I really like the setting at the NSC. I have seen other Tiffany inspired legacy settings, but I like the one from NSC best.

I adore purple sapphires and finding just the right one is a challenge because of the different shades of purple. It took me years to find "the one" for me!

Personally I wouldn't buy from NSC because of their business practices - which are shoddy to say the least. I also agree with Chrono that the sapphire you've picked has a very large window. Some of it may close up in the Tiffanyesque setting but I doubt it'll totally close up and that may marr the beauty of the ring. If it's for an e-ring I would suggest carrying on looking because you want the absolute best.

Have a look here http://www.planetarygems.com/rare_gems.htm They have a large number of purple sapphires and you may find one you like. What I would say is try to compromise on the size if possible. Whilst 2ct is lovely, if the compromise is the cut and you can get a 1.5 with a much better cut, it's likely to out perform the larger windowed gem every time.

Definitely windowless but will it being off-symmetry bug you?

In a Legacyesque setting the lack of symmetry will be awful I'm afraid. It may even appear more wonky because you'll have the clean (slightly rounded) edges to the setting and then a central stone that doesn't follow the same lines.

That is a beautiful emerald. But I do have my heart set on a purple sq cushion cut sapphire. I would have just got the one I saw at Tiffany's, but it was $10,800 CAD for 1.47 ct and from what I see online -- I can make it for half the price. Just going to have to keep looking until I find the right sapphire for me. :)
