Hi folks I was wondering if I could trouble you all for a more expert opinion :) I recently bought this ring from an ebay seller and they had it listed as an aquamarine. Do you think it could be? I also wonder if it is an older cut stone? Thanks so much I have a lot to learn :read: :wavey:

That it's a pale blue faceted stone is unfortunately all that can be said from a photograph.

You would need to take it to a gemmologist for testing to be sure what it is (most jewellers are not gemmologists btw so be careful if you go that route).

It could be an aqua, topaz, glass or just about anything that is blue. If you are not sure, you'll have to bring it to a gemmologist to get it checked out. I ditto Pandora's advise that not all jewellers are gemmologists. Not only that, even among gemmologists, many tend to be unfamiliar with coloured gemstones.

everything Chrono and Pandora said.

Ditto, but its a pretty and unique looking ring!

I'm not sure it's an old stone either. The cut looks more modern and I suspect the ring is a modern replica. Having said that it's absolutely beautiful!

Thank you for the compliments and sharing your knowledge! :) Clearly I am a novice with the variables of coloured stones who knew!

LD I hope it is an antique I have attached this photo of the gallery which shows some age what do you think? Perhaps it is just a clever repro?

I do not know much about settings but the stone looks very well cut - almost as though it was precision cut! It has all the hallmarks of a precision cut stone from the high crown, very good facet meet points and great symmetry. Do you know approximately how old it is supposed to be? If it is very old, the aquamarine is in superb condition showing no wear and tear, which is unusual.

Hi Chrono thanks for your response It was sold as an art deco piece and it was relatively inexpensive (around $450) so I will not be too upset either way. I think the diamonds are old single cuts...

I'll post close ups maybe they will shed more light?

I think part of the fun is trying to guess at the history of the piece but I hope I'm not boring you guys with more pics!

Thank you for the super close ups! I can see some wear and tear on the stone now so at least you know it's been worn before in the past and it's not a newish stone that might have been swapped in. The design is rather modern though. But whatever it might be, I think it's a lovely piece.

I also think it's lovely and hope that it is an aquamarine - come back and tell us if you get an answer.

My father bought a stick-pin last year for a couple of pounds in a junk shop with an approx 11ct emerald cut stone of a similar colour to yours. It was sold as glass but he was not convinced. I was able to confirm it as a natural aquamarine. It was also in pretty good nick for its age with just one minor chip. He was pretty happy!

Thanks Chrono I'll be sure to let you know when I receive it and will take some more pics :)

Ooooh Pandora I love stories like yours, its like a real treasure hunt. I will definitely come back and let you know- god knows I'm on here all the time reading anyway :naughty: My only challenge will be finding where to go in Melbourne to have a gemmologist look at it. I have a good jeweler who does lovely work, but going on what you guys are saying, I may need a gemmologist to look at it...
