I was poking around eBay looking for a small cardboard ring box to match an old designer piece -- more idle curiosity than anything else. And I stumbled across what looks like a whole cottage industry in "real" Tiffany, Cartier, etc. boxes and packaging -- inner box, outer box, bag, folio. You can even get a kit that comes with a "registration number" with an embossed seal -- and all you have to do is fill in the specs. (My guess is this will be like the Woolworth Social Security card 
.) And they are getting tons of attention on eBay. I could see if you had one dirty box to sell it could be legit, but these outfits are selling hundreds of brand-new "authentic" boxes.
Provenance really matters! We have some vintage Tiffany that was sold to us as "can not confirm; no one can," but it is a one-off and they put it in an old Tiffany pouch because that's how it came to them but they could not even confirm that the pouch was genuine. We paid a non-Tiffany price for that.
