It helps to use the right sized stone

So, here's the story...

I bought two trillions, a nice chryso and spinel. They're 6.5mm and 6.2mm respectively. I also bought a 6mm trillion mount from tripps.com that I had hoped to set either of those in... MYSELF

It became painfully obvious that the chryso just would not fit. The spinel, had I more experience and tools, probably would have fit. Alas, I just couldn't finagle it.

What was I to do???

It helps to have a stock pile of unmounted stones!

The only other trillion I have is my tsav. It measures in at 5.97mm

One horribly mangled setting job later and I have this to show



Don't worry, the top right prong looks like it's not making contact, but it is and the stone is secure Albeit sloppy

Good for you, Davi! The tsavorite really, really pops in that setting. Unless you chryso was really neon, I think the tsav is a better choice.

It looked good sitting in the setting too. I'll be heading to a jeweler soon to see about setting this and a new spinel I bought from Dana (there may be a thread on that if I feel like resizing the pictures)

I still think it was fortuitous that the tsav fit and the chryso did not. The color of the setting enhances the slight bluish cast of your tsavorite and it looks great.

As always, I'd welcome any new pics you'd want to provide.

I've used their silver mounts and noticed they run a bit small, I think they shrink somewhere in casting. I have taken to ordering the next size up. The gold is pretty true to size. But the silver settings are so cheap (under $20), it's not a big loss if it doesn't work for me.

But that's a tough shape/style of mount, that requires a precise fit, so with it running small, no wonder it was tough. I have only used regular solitaires and that type of thing.

Did you use the fancy special Tripps plier-thingy? The big red thing that comes in the kit? I've found that works a lot better than regular pliers.

Are you going to polish it? I understand that you are supposed to rub it really hard with a stainless steel spoon to polish it up. I've never bothered, though.

i like the texture of the setting! i think it makes your tsav really POP set in that metal color.

Not only are you daring, you did a pretty decent job! It turns out the tsavorite fits the setting in terms of overall appearance as well.

Yep, the red thingers. I think I have the hang of them now, so future projects (if any) will be a bit easier I hadn't read about the spoon, I'll have too look that up

I'm impressed. I set a couple of really inexpensive stone (ovals) in simple inexpensive silver solitaires a few years ago to see how they looked.... they looked like someone (who didn't know what they were doing) set inexpensive stones in an inexpensive mount

That was pretty much the end of my gemsetting.

I would too, if I were more confident in the security of the stone. I'll have to loupe it really well before I take it for a spin Which will be soon... after all the gardening is done

Usually those settings are better with exact or smaller stones, a little big and you are usually out of luck.
Never heard of the spoon idea but it makes sense. I use a tool called a burnisher, it used to be a worn out file. The texture was completely removed and it was polished like a piece of jewelry. Rubbing it on a piece is called 'hand burnishing' and makes a very high polish when done after all other polishing. I polish my burnisher while in the process of polishing jewelry with a piece of 1200 grit paper and some red polishing compound. Best regards, Lee
