Hi - I bought this ring last week with the prettiest green stone and trying to figure out what it could be landed me here (and drooling over other pretty gemstones on the forum!). Can someone help me identify the stone? It looks liks a jade of some sort (jadeite? nephrite? no idea) and is semi-transparent with some Chinese markings on the band. I haven't found any jade cut in the shape of an octagon though (cabochons, yes) and I know that there are other green stones out there so it might be something else entirely? I just love the color of the ring and would like to find out more about it, if possible. Thanks!SAM_6409.JPGSAM_6410.JPGSAM_6406.JPGSAM_6407.JPGSAM_6408.JPG

What kind of metal is it set in? That often gives a clue as to whether the atone has value or not. I know my bracelet is jadeite jade only because it came with a GIA report; you may need to get one unless you find an appraiser familiar with jade.

No idea if it's jadeite. It looks a little bit waxy so I think it could be chrysoprase if it's not jadeite. It's definitely a lovely saturated green, so congrats!

It's not the right color to be nephrite.

@doberman: It is set in 22k gold which is a bit unusual because I haven't seen prong set rings in 22k before. The ring itself looks completely handmade and has two Chinese marks stamped on the band (haven't a clue as to what they mean). I bought it at a vintage resale shop so it didn't come with a lot of information.

@voce: Chysophrase was the other green stone that I couldn't remember the name of, thanks! It's not my ususal style but I got drawn to the pop of green in an otherwise kind of stodgy (?) little ring.

I love that belcher setting. See if you can focus on the stamp inside the ring. You might try thru a magnifying glass. Someone here might recognize something.

It’s really a cool looking ring!

It’s quite probably jade being set in 22kt gold and with Chinese hallmarks.
I’m no jade expert but the thing about jade (and no one can tell from a photo) is that there 3 grades of jade.
Grade A is the top quality, basically cleaned and polished with no artificial enhancements or process. This quality is very expensive and high prized.
Grade B is mid range, still jade but it has undergone more intrusive treatments including fillers.
Grade C is technically Jade but it has been highly treated. It can be bleached, dyed (any colour you care for) with stablisers and fissure filled. This is basically of no true worth or desirability (except people who know no better) as it is so far from being “natural”.
Grade A jade is so valued and so revered because fine colour without any treatment is extremely rare.
Top colour Grade A Jade can be worth more than diamonds and rubies!
You could send it in to AGL or GIA and they can give you a report.
