James Allen Photos Questions

Hello, I have two questions about the photos on James Allen.

First, some of the diamonds have areas of blue on them but are listed as having no fluorescence. Is this just the way the light hit the camera or will the diamond actually have blue spots on it when I receive it? Here is an example: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI2-Excellent-Cut-Round-Diamond-1505928.asp

The second question is how people have judged whether or not the diamond will be eye-clean. When I use the magnifying glass online I can often find inclusions on VS2 and SI1 diamonds. If I can't see those inclusions on the thumbnail picture (image that displays when doing a loose diamond search) is it probably a pretty good assumption that the diamond is eye-clean?

Thanks!

Even diamonds that fluoresce blue do not have blue spots. Blue in the arrow shafts like that are a sign of deep proportions, while blue under the table or at the arrow tips will be a sign of shallow proportions.

In real life your diamond will not be magnified 100x (or whatever the magnification is on the JA site). The thumbnail is I think 40x. You should check with the gemologist about whether something is eye-clean, do not rely on photos.

The blue is just the reflection, and how the diamond was positioned when the photo was taken. If it says it doesn't have fluorescence, then it doesnt. To answer your second question, they do have gemologists on staff that you can talk to and can send you additional photos and may even be able to do a video. You'd have to talk to them. The absolute BEST way to judge a diamond is to see it in person.

They actually have different cameras and different photographers, so you cannot tell color from their images.

While most VS2 diamonds will be eye-clean, JA has images at 10 magnification and another 10x with the loupe, so you're seeing more. Plus, you have to take into consideration the actual size of the diamond in comparison to the enlarged image on your screen. Typically, a 1ct round will be the size of a pencil eraser, so while you're seeing a huge inclusion in the image, it will not look like that in person. Definitely request a gemologist inspection if you're unsure though, as they will review the diamond in person for you.

Diamond looks nice. The only thing that bothers is the inclusion at 12 o’clock but its not a big deal, it can be easily covered under the prongs. Ask them to get the diamond checked by their gemologist. If GIA cert says Fluorescence is none then it should be accurate, however, you may ask them to get the diamond re checked if you have any doubts. Also check the HCA score of the diamond… https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca
