JannPaul Oval diamond size is significantly smaller. Is it worth it?

Hi all, I need help making decison on whether to purchase the JannPaul Oval diamond. It is to replace current oval diamond ring.

My current oval size is 2.25ct 11.03 x 7.49 x 4.51mm.

They offered me with the following options:
1) Oval X 1.35 ratio 2.65ct 9.43 x 6.99 x 5.8mm
2) Oval Nova 1.4 ratio 2.65ct 9.52 x 6.8 x 5.76mm

The L x W of the 2 are significantly smaller than my current Oval even though the carat weight is bigger. They said to get the similar L xW to my current one I will have to go all the way to nearly 4ct which will cost too much.

I am struggling to decide whether I can live with smaller L x W to trade it for better shines and brightness.

Also why the Depth of these diamonds are so deep!?

Should I go ahead with either the options? Has anyone here ever been in similar situations and what have you decided?

Have you used the diamdb.com webside to get a visual on how much smaller the stones will be?

The depth has to be deeper to get the right angles to get the "good" light return. Its all part of making the sauce.

Only you can decide if its worth it to go smaller to get better light return or to look for a typical oval with
the best light return you can find. Tough decision!

Yes compared the sizes on diamdb.com and they look significantly smaller. See attached screenshot.

When I had my video call with them they showed me the comparison of a 1.09ct normal Oval vs 1.3ct Oval Nova and 1.3ct Oval X, that’s when I first realised how smaller they are. See the second image below.

If you are in my situation what would you choose?

What is the goal of your replacement?
For some folks an increase in performance is worth it, however, dependant on your wants, there may be ways to find a unbranded oval that has good performance

To increase the performance yes. Is there any good unbranded suppliers that you know of?

4 mains tend to have better light return and less "mush" IMO but you have to do a lot of hunting and pecking to find
them, especially in a lab. See the grading report to see how many mains are on the pavilion of the stone (if you dont
know how to spot them). There are good and bad cuts of all the different cuts of ovals. Each oval has to be evaluated
on its own merits.

They still wont be as good as the Jann Paul stones but they will most likely be less expensive (and bigger).

Can you post an up-close picture of your current stone and the grading report?

What is your budget for a new stone if you decide to go that route?

Seconded. Do you want "perfect" or is some small amount of bowtie ok?

I would prefer the better light return but it would be hard to go smaller after I've already had "bigger".
I would be afraid DSS (Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome) would set in really fast with a JP stone after already owning
a larger stone. I would look around for a non-JP stone to see if I could find anything with really good light return
then go from there. I don't have a definitive answer for you because it would depend on what I could find.

Have you looked at distinctive Gems August Vintage ovals...they will also be deep to get the best light return however,
less expensive than JP??? Not sure to be honest. DG cuts stones to order I believe.

Yup, if i were looking at ovals I would be considering JP or DG.

Posting to mention that Brian Gavin has a proprietary oval cut diamond as well. He has limited natural inventory and no lab inventory, but I do recall that he takes custom cut orders. Might be worth reaching out to ask for a quote.

I took a look at JannPaul's Oval X and Brian Gavin's oval to compare them for you and here are their stats:

1.58 carat Oval X: 1.35 ratio, 4.88 mm depth

1.54 Brian Gavin Oval: 1.22 ratio, 4.57 mm depth

So Brian Gavin ovals are less deep, but not to a huge degree I think. Unfortunately, diamond light performance is all a matter of geometry and sometimes, a deeper cut stone really is necessary to achieve the best light performance.
