I went into a gallery and was fascinated like never before. This artist''s photos look as if they are lit from within. They are more stunning in real life, but here''s a sample: www.peterlik.com Enjoy!

Stunning! He really does do wonders with a camera - subjects aren''t bad either but he truly captures them! Thanks for sharing!

What beautiful photographs! I love the starfish picture.

Harriet,

Yes, he does use an old fashioned camera. It is a 8 x 10 like you see in the old west movies. He does it all naturally as you cannot "play" with a photo from these camera negatives. There are no manipulations to his prints.

He has a gallery in Maui that we go to every year we are there. We purchased his book that talks all about how he "sees" the photos and translates it to the large glass negatives. I''d be happy to copy some of that information here for you if interested. Just let me know.

I agree with you that he is an amazing artist!

Julie

Gorgeous! I can''t decide which scene I''d most like to drop into . . .

His work is absolutely breathtaking. I do believe that some of the lighting and enhanced color, is the result of some great photoshop skills. I played around with a few pics I took, and added a "spotlight" or created light where there was none. Very cool..digital photography and post processing is amazing these days!

Great link -- thanks Harriet! His photos are amazing!

Whoa. Thanks so much for the link. Going to check out the Soho gallery.

Beautiful!

Beau,
if you refer to what Jmtomaui has written above, apparently he does not use a digital camera and so everything is "real". Even more interesting this way, imho.

I agree, great link Harriett! The natural world around us is truely an amazingl thing, and what a great skill to be able to record it with such beauty.

The things that make the images so special and appealing to the eye are probably their extremely saturated colors in daylight lighting scenarios, the high contrast, and exceptional sharpness.

Mr. Lik acheives the effect by using Velvia film, which is a color reversal style of film. The process creates a still, positive image on a transparent base (contrast that with the "negative-and-print" type of photography we''re most used to seeing).

It''s a great choice for nature photography. In addition to Mr. Lik, Steve Parrish and Galen Rowell use it.

The first time I ever heard of it in my life was when my fiance was one of the cameramen for a movie called "What Dreams may Come" I think ten years ago? maybe more? He used it to shoot some of the stock "landscape shots" and a few of the background plates for the movie''s special effects.

It''s a very cool product. if you have a 35mm film (as opposed to digital) camera and you want to play with it, they sell Velvia at pro camera shops. I think Fuji makes it, but I''m not 100% sure...

Great photos. Thanks.

I''ve been to his gallery in Lahaina, Maui and Wyland''s gallery is on the same street. I love both their work! I actually own a Wyland lithograph called The Storm. Now I am thinking I''d love to own one of Peter Lik''s works and I may visit his gallery in Miami when I''m down there next month. Hmm. maybe just a book if his prices are tooo much for me.

FI and I are fans ever since walking into his store/gallery in Vegas! Just gorgeous. They change according to the light -- so it'll look different in the morning and different at night...just like it would in nature. His work is so beautiful.

i''m pretty sure he manipulates them too. i saw his pics of the same painted eucalyptus trees i took pics of. his colors are vastly different [as in enhanced] than the actual trees.

You''re right JCROW..the sky, the water..VERY blue..the colors have to be enhanced, the colors are too vribrant (saturated) not to be manipulated. The colors give it that extra WOW factor!

I know that when I photograph with my digital SLR..everything is still "

real"
No matter what camera you use..the raw pic and final pic can look totally different. Again..he is a master photographer for sure!!

Well, they are certainly exceptional no matter how he does it!

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your offer. Which book is it? I bought the "Australian" one, as well as the gallery catalogue.

Thanks for the info! I just received a Canon Rebel for Christmas. Is there any way of taking such photos on it?

You can take some awesome pics with the Canon Rebel...I'm still learning with mine. I play around with photoshop, and the colors are AMAZING!!
This will help you out Harriet

Hariret, here is a pic taken with the Rebel XSi (on macro setting), then I enhanced the color of the lady bug with Photoshop. You'll find lots of helpful info (geared specifically towards Canon users) on the site I just provided for you. The Rebel was recommended to me by professionals, who said it would be "more than what I need" to get started as a semi-professional photographer.

I saw the Plaza one but I hardly ever make it uptown anymore (yes, i consider the 50''s uptown.. lol)
But company would be great, and I''m totally down for the Soho one since I could walk there or take the subway all of two stops.

I just mentioned it to my husband and was told to leave my credit cards at home.. ugh.

Simply STUNNING!

Harriet, FI and I just bought the Canon Rebel XSi. What model did you get? There's so much to learn, huh?

Beau, thanks for the link you provided to Harriet. I've just added it as a favourite and will be referring to it often as I learn to use my new toy.
