Simply STUNNING!

Harriet, FI and I just bought the Canon Rebel XSi. What model did you get? There's so much to learn, huh?

Beau, thanks for the link you provided to Harriet. I've just added it as a favourite and will be referring to it often as I learn to use my new toy.
No problem Pocahontas! I find the members of that forum VERY helpful..and it's very educational, if you're interested in REALLY learning about photography! I knew nothing about aperature, FP, ISO, etc.....there is so much to learn!! Good luck..the XSI is wonderful!!

Whoa. Thanks so much for the link. Going to check out the Soho gallery.
Want company? There''s a gallery in the Plaza too.
I saw the Plaza one but I hardly ever make it uptown anymore (yes, i consider the 50''s uptown.. lol)
But company would be great, and I''m totally down for the Soho one since I could walk there or take the subway all of two stops.

I just mentioned it to my husband and was told to leave my credit cards at home.. ugh.
Haha. Anything south of CPS is downtown to me. I''d like to go to Blick''s next week and could head down to SoHo after that. It would be great to meet you.

I got the EOS. I''m still scared by the thing.

Harriet- We should probably get admin to allow us to send the other an email address. I remember Gypsy''s home was robbed recently, so we should be very careful about setting a date and place on a public forum.

Maybe I''m just being the typical paranoid new yorker, but you never know.

OMG those are so beautiful! I'm seriously considering getting one for my house! (Are they for sale?)
Yes, they are for sale and they are surprisingly affordable for what you get. We're looking at one of a Japanese maple. It's for a foyer -- almost 6 feet tall and if I remember correctly it was about $5k. But you'll keep it forever (the coating is UV protected so it won't fade) and smaller works are much less.

Elle,

As a paranoid New Yorker myself, I agree.

Bliss,
I like your signature.

Boy! Am I an idiot or what. I never realized he had 2 galleries in NY! I''ll be there next week, maybe I''ll stop in. Which gallery do you think is better?

I haven''t read about the photographer, but the images are stunning. I love nature photos. It looks to me that the color is enhanced somehow, but not sure how does it (during the picture taking, film, development, post processing, etc). The fact that it is manipulated doesn''t detract from the beauty, almost looks like a cross between a photograph and a painting. I don''t have any experience with color photography, but when my sister was doing black and white photography, it is amazing the amount of manipulation you can do to an image both during the exposure, and also when you develop the film; no computer required.

Hi Harriet,
I saw his exhibition in Las Vegas at the Venitian. It was stunning but the sales people weren''t very communicative about selling price. I somehow got the impression Corps were their target.
While we are on this topic, I have turned to collecting some art work on ebay. I just began looking through and found some great things, not overpriced as compared to a gallary. There is the son of an impressionist(American painter who is selling his and his fathers works. The fathers work has been collected by Jimmy Carter, Kissinger, many importat people along his life. He is 75 now. Not all his work looks great but i picked up some very reasonably. His prices have gone up lately.
I have gone off of gemstones and this is my new hobby.

Thanks,
Annette

This guy really is brilliant. I do love that his work is completely untouched by photoshop, something I always strive to do myself, and it''s hard! It takes a long time to learn, I usually epic fail, but I can get close. The night shots he has look like long exposures - maybe 3-5 seconds.

You would be shocked at how much darkroom time goes into images like that.
I find it hilarious that people think post-processing started with photoshop.
I once spent 7 hours in the darkroom just on one print.

Karl,

I have to agree with you on the countless hours both my DH and I have spent in the darkroom trying to get the negative to bring out the hard work we put into getting the photo in the first place. One that reflects the long hours in the early morning or late night to avoid harsh lighting that washes out the true color, the hours spent getting someplace before the others to be in the right place at the right time. The miles trekked carrying heavy equipment with multiple lens. Practice using our equipment to the best it can be used. Knowing only 1 photo in 50 (if we are lucky) is even worth spending the time in the darkroom.

Maybe I take it too personally but a photo that has been photoshopped to produce what was not there to begin with (ie color saturation, clarity, focus) is somewhat akin to a clarity enhanced diamond. Someone wanted to take a mediocre stone and try to make it into something it isn''t through filling fractures, heating stones for enhanced color, etc. Things that horrify PS members with regard to jewels... I see photoshop in the same way... Someone taking a mediocre photo and contriving to make it something it isn''t.

I do realize everyone has their own ideas and opinions on some of this and none of us is right. Or wrong. We are simply entitled to our opinions and I always appreciate others'' views in an effort to strengthen my own or educate me in some way.

Peace - Julie

counterpoint :}

sssssssshhhhh big secret... spend 200 hours on an image or 10 seconds it will never look like it did when one was there.
The camera both film and digital just see different than the human eye then you print it in 2d....
When spending the time in the darkroom all one can do is their best to show the image as they interpret it.
The same can be said of photoshop.
One in itself is not more pure than the other as its just another way of doing the same thing.

That said I do like to photos and turn them into art in photoshop but i also did so in the darkroom.
It is not about how it is done but what is done.
There is a time and place for art and there is a time and place for trying to match reality.
A great photographer can make both look awesome every time :}
The rest of us mere mortals will have to make do with getting lucky that one in 50 makes the cut.

Btw I had this same conversation 20+ years ago using different terms with a guy who said that spending more than 1 min in the darkroom on any image was not creating a photograph but trying to make up for a lack of skill with a camera...
He would have called those photos you worked so hard on and did call the ones I worked so hard on fake.
So it really is an age old argument.

For example... art or photo?
Does it really matter? :}

Thanks for the counterpoint Karl! And one I do have to agree with when I think about it with an open mind... hahaha

You are correct - we are all just trying to share our visions with others and how those visions are achieved is a matter of semantics. I guess I just feel sad for the day when it is all art and no photo. Photography will become a lost art to computer generated graphics... Yes, I do know I''m showing my age here... sigh...

I honestly don't think that will ever happen photography is more wide spread today than it ever was.
The vast majority can't edit a photo beyond cropping to print.
Considering I started shooting over 30 years ago I'm not that young either lol

Harriet, awesome link. Thanks! I don''t know what''s better, his pics, or his accent.

jm, I feel the same way you do about altering pics. Outside of changing the brightness/contrast a tad (with mine anyway), I always thought anything else would be "cheating". strm makes a good point, just not sure I could do it.

Idiot here. I never knew he had galleries in NY. Heck, I didn''t even know he has had a gallery in Miami Beach for a year.

Uh oh. Please don't suggest anymore hobbies, Annette.

Incidentally, the sales associate at the Miami Beach gallery implied that the prices are negotiable.

I''ve been eyeing the set of 9, but I just learnt that it''s an open edition. Bummer.
