JBEG OEC on hold - help me pull the trigger?

I've been searching for a while through reliable vendors, as I'm not brave or knowledgeable enough for Ebay adventures. I have this OEC on hold, to be placed in a Sholdt semi bezel inspired setting. I had posted previously, asking if anyone had attempted this and it wasn't until Audball's creation showed up that my instincts were confirmed. Thanks, Audball!

How does this stone fare? Your thoughts, please? Any reason why I should not go for it? My parameters for the stone are that it have a higher color (I know many prefer warmer OECs), few inclusions from the top and North/South sides (as they will be exposed in the setting), close to 7mm, and of course, budget (9k). Erica says it's gorgeous and I of course believe her. She and Grace have been tremendous help.

It's GIA certed as a 1.42 H, SI1. There's a cavity at the girdle that can be almost entirely polished off. If not it can be hidden by one of the bezels. The extremely thin portion of the girdle will also be made better for the setting's sake. Otherwise, it shows as:

Cut grade: G, which I'm told for GIA is quite good in older cuts
Polish: VG
Symmetry: G
Fluor: None
Table 57
Depth 61.5
Crown 36
Pavillion 42.8
Culet: slightly large
(hope I read the GIA correctly)

I assume that you are paying a premium since it is Tiffany's. Are you concerned that you are losing the Tiffany's name (and associated value) when you get rid of the setting?

I'm buying the stone only, actually. I've always been a bezel / semi bezel admirer. Prong and halo settings don't work on me.

For some reason this one is not jumping out at me like most of the beautiful OECs we see. I dont know if its because
it is mounted or what but it is very difficult to see the faceting pattern. Its a personal opinion but i'm not big on this one.

Funny tyty, I agree with you. Something's not grabbing me...

TYTY, that is the one thing that has me stuck as well. A smaller table would have given it a higher crown, which I would have preferred. I've been searching for perhaps a month, mainly through folks / vendors who are recommended on PS and this is the closest I've gotten while staying within budget. The reason I prefer a higher color is because after seeing OECs in person, it's my gut preference. Especially so given setting I want, made of white gold and one which exposes the stone (and its color) completely on two sides (north, south). If I were going for an antique setting in unplated white gold, or rose or yellow, I would go lower. But I've always liked the Sholdt. So there we are.

I also agree that I've seen more striking facet patterns. In a way, it's a mix of an old cut and new in that the crown is not as high, the table is larger and the color higher. And yet it's not a transitional. It's pretty but not WOW.

There's a big part of me that feels badly even posting about it as I am / was just a breath away from wiring the funds. The vendors have been so helpful.

Is it worth it to have it shipped to see in person? I don't think that will change my gut reaction re: table, crown, faceting, especially since I've had a chance to see some lovely ones in person recently. And I'd rather save the shipping costs. Even small expenses chip away at the stone's budget.

What would you do?

Honestly, I don't care for the looks of it all that much, sorry. :blackeye:

There is nothing particularly OECish about this except for the short lower girdles.

Looks leaky.

I know JBEG is wonderful and I dont really want to steer you away from them but have you talked to the guys at
old world diamonds. I believe they have a lot more then what they have on there website.

They do you just have to email them.

As far as the JbEG diamond I wouldn't actually give up on it. I would ask if they could send it to you and if you could see it in person. For some reason I feel it is an OEC that doesn't photograph well but could look much better in person. I would still contact OWD though.

I don't love the facet pattern on that one. Hard to know if it's just the pics, but it doesn't grab me.

If you're looking for a more classic OEC with a high crown and small table, what about this one? http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.c...amond/24326572_xqZjFc#!i=1981555808&k=5vfPGnP

I was also going to suggest looking at Dreamer's stone. Here's her Loupe Troop listing:

I have to agree with the others on the 1.42ct stone. I haven't bought from JbEG but they were awesome when I contacted about something that didn't come through in the end. You could still stay with them, just buy another stone... I'm guessing the 1.36 I-color faces up quite white from all sides. Worth asking JbEG about it I think.

Have you asked JBEG if they have anything else not posted on the website?
I gave them specific things I wanted in a stone and mine was pulled from a batch that had just arrived that day.
Even the pics of my diamond(although much smaller) too my breath away as being wow, this is exactly what I wanted.
Yours should do the same:)

I agree with the others that a LOT of the value of that ring is that it is Tiffany. The minute you take it out of that setting, the stone goes down in value forever. So don't do that!

I know you are trying to avoid ebay, but this one was purchased from Doyle, has an EGL report, and is H/I in color. One of the OEC experts can tell you if if it is cut well.

Also, even to a novice like me, the pattern on this one is gorgeous.

Thanks, everyone. I also emailed Erica to ask that she keep me in mind as new stones come to her attention. I hope she's not disappointed as we really were about to seal the deal. I confess I'm a little relieved not to go through with it. My plan was to sign off from PS for a good while and just enjoy my ring. But in my heart of hearts, had I bought this OEC, I already saw myself back, scrolling and thinking "what if". Does that make sense?

I've only really been looking for about a month. More patience. How long did it take to find your stone? Thanks for your honest opinions, they confirmed what I was feeling.

If in your searches you come across "my stone" on eBay or another place, I would love to hear from you!

Ruby, you have a good eye. The faceting on that 2.5 is really something. But both are out of price range and I don't think I could pull off wearing something so substantial (read: big). I'd probably go as far as 7.5mm but not more. Even that is more than I would have wanted a few months ago. In this regard, I'm taking everyone's stories of DSS to heart and planning in advance ;).

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd prefer to be as colorless from a profile view as I can afford-ably get. So G/H/I by GIA standards? Or F/G/H by EGL USA standards.

Don't settle, the right one will come along I promise! :)

I'm one who pulled the trigger when that little voice was whispering in my head and I no longer have that stone or setting. Trust yourself. Be patient (this from someone who has learned the hard way not to be hasty)...the reward will be worth it!

I know you said you didn't like prong and halo settings, but if this setting appeals to you:

Also could consider this, though it would be shipped internationally if you're not in the US, but has a return poilcy

I agree with the others, if it doesn't speak to you, then hold off. You'll find your perfect stone!

I will happily be the odd one out on this one - I think that some of the other photos show a beautiful stone. :)) But I also agree that it would not be a stone I would purchase for the purposes of taking out of the setting - much of the value is tied up in being an original Tiffany. For that reason alone I would keep looking.
