Jergens Natural Glow... have they *changed* the formula?

I have used JNG for several seasons, and it seemed like before I would put in on religiously every morning and get the barest hint of color over time. This year I put it on for the first time, got dressed, and when I took my clothes off that night I was ORANGE. From one application. YIKES. Had anyone else noticed this or do I just have a weird case of jaundice from the hips on down... ?

I've noticed a difference too. I used to love the color and hate the smell. This year I found a "less odor" version and doesn't have much of the self-tanner smell but it does look more orange to me.

I was just reading up on self tanners! I still have the tab up on my computer.
The blogger on maskcara.com said they fixed the smell on Jergens, but didn't say anything about the formula.

She recommends a self tanner from sun labs. Here's her post on it:

iluvshinythings - do you think it smells *less* or *less* AND *different*? I actually never minded the smell, but this year I consciously said, ewwww--I can smell this and I don't like it!

house cat - thank you SO MUCh for that link! I just ordered the Sun Laboratories stuff. Hope it comes before the PS GTG next week or I'll still be walking around with orange streaky legs in Vegas!

Which one did you buy? I used to use firming one, then just the regular one, but then stopped altogether because of the smell. I see now that they changed the odor so maybe I should try it? They also now make an accelerated version. Hopefully you didn't grab that one by mistake lol!

sonny, just looked at the tube and OH YES, I got the *three day version*, LOL! No wonder I'm all oranged up!!!

Seriously, I have got to get this stuff OFF. I tried some exfoliating scrub on one spot on the top of my foot today and it didn't even make a dent. Good lord... what have I done?!? Now I'm afraid to try anything else. Of course I WILL use the Sun Labs stuff the moment I get it out of the package when it comes (who am I kidding?!) so I hope I have faded enough by then that I don't create some sort of mixed tanning product disaster.

Ah; the love/hate relationship with summer...

Oh no!!!!! I would say in the meantime use regular body lotion and a hot, wet wash cloth and just keep applying the body lotion and rubbing off with the cloth.

Nivea has a moisturizer with self-tanner for terminally pale people like myself. The Fair to Medium version gives me a nice glow, with no icky smell, no orangey tint, and it dries fast! I highly recommend it; I believe I found it at Target.

Hi DeeJay! :wavey:

I did the same thing; made myself all orange with a self-tanner!

I got it all OFF with Lava bar soap. It's an old-timey brand, it has pumice in it and REALLY scrubs. I like to use it once a year for a good exfoliation, but it also worked great with the self tanner removal. Lava is hard to find, it's sold mostly for garages and industrial supply, but if you hunt around for it, you can find it. I found mine at a small family owned grocery store that has been around forever.

It totally worked. After one hot shower, scrubbing with the Lava, and I was back to my old self. But I did do it right away, when I saw the orange, so that might make a difference. Good news is that self tanners do fade as you skin sheds the layers. Use the lava to get rid of the layers faster.

I'm going to try this! :appl:

Holly, thank you for the Nivea recommendation! The other stuff I ordered hasn't come yet (hell--hasn't even SHIPPED yet) so I will be getting this from CVS tomorrow.

iLander, I took a bath tonight and scrubbed my legs with a washcloth... Of course I used a WHITE one that my never be white again... The "tone" is starting to look better, but the color is still orange.

Oh, and not only did I get the accelerated version--I also got medium/dark. I'm Irish for god's sake--medium/dark?!? I can't explain how I made such a bad choice here... Good thing it's only 47 degrees in Chicago and still very much long pants weather!

Lol read those labels carefully next time hahah! And at least you didn't (hopefully) put it on your face lol!

DJ, I used to use Jergens too, but oy, the smell. Target makes their own brand that smells a whole lot better and is cheaper. I'm a white chick from the word go and it works pretty good on me. My only complaint is that it tends to dry your legs out, but that seems to be the nature of the beast.

I'll have to check this out! Jergen's never worked for me...it always turned me orange. I am horribly pale as well, and while I don't need to be dark, I'd like to have enough natural glow color so that I could wear a skirt without blinding people!

Sonny, THANK GOD I didn’t put this stuff on my face! HA! I would have had to take a week off work!

Texaskj, hm, I haven’t noticed the self tanners drying out my legs. I will pay more attention to that and maybe alternate one day with the tanning stuff and the next day with regular lotion.

Orbaya, I know what you mean about blinding people, especially in the very beginning of summer!

I've tried many different brands, but my go-to has been St Tropez for about 2 years now. It's more expensive, but the smell is the best I've found (I hate the tell-tale scent of sunless tanners) and the color is realistic and gradual.

Speaking of exfoliating,

http://www.saluxshop.com/

This is the best exfoliating towel on the market. Others have made them, but they don't compare. You use this before you "tan." The towel is really big, so it makes it very easy to do your back. I usually buy mine on Ebay, but you can get them all over the net.

I use mine every other day.

This product goes way beyond simply "scrubbing" the skin. It's amazing. Before turning on the water, I step in the shower and slowly rub the product all over my body (not my face or my "sensitive" areas). Then, I turn on the shower and rinse. It's the perfect exfoliator before applying sunless tanner.

momhappy, I've read that is great stuff but it's expensive!! I'd go through one jar in no time!

^You're not supposed to use it daily - once or twice a week is fine. The jar is quite large and it doesn't take much product to be effective. I use a scoop for my arms/chest and a scoop for my lower body.

Blinding people with skin - BAD. Blinding people with sparklies - AWESOME! :Up_to_something:

Just threw out my Jergens, the smell,. ick, Just ordered the Sun Labs, hope it works

So I got the Nivea last night and I put it on before I went to bed (I did let it dry for an hour or so first!). Really no result at all this morning, but I put it on again after I got out of the shower. I am going to try morning and night for the next few days in an effort to get *some* color before I have to bare my legs in Vegas...

At first I LOVED the smell of the Nivea (kind of like a pineapple-y umbrella drink!) but now that I've had it on for a while I'm not quite as in love with it. I don't HATE it though, so that's a bonus!

So I felt like I should circle back and report on the self tanning adventure.

The Sun Labs stuff made me look as orange (possibly even more so!) than the Jergens did, plus it was streakier.

The Nivea light/fair (I think that's what they call it on the bottle), after applying it day after day after day, did nothing... Nothing. I looked for the medium/dark version to try but I haven't been able to locate it anywhere.

So, as a last resort, I mixed 1/3 Jergens and 2/3 regular lotion and applied that a couple of times. That seems to be the best result yet; i.e., *some* color and no streaking. I have gotten enough "tan" though that I need to go back and put some on my upper legs becuase there is a marked contrast between my lower "tanner" legs and where I obviously stop applying around mid thigh.

A lady in my office likes the Sally Hansen spray on stuff, and here legs do look nice, but since I've now got three full tubs of stuff on my counter right now I think I'll save that for NEXT summer!

So did you try the regular Jergens new formula or are you just mixing the strong stuff with lotion?

sonnyjane, since I already have a tub of the strong stuff I'm just mixing that with lotion. My bad for buying the strong stuff in the first place--I would never have done that if I was paying better attention!

I 2nd.. (3rd?) Nivea. If you google beauty blogs, a lot of gurus swear by mixing the nivea with the jergen's. I used that last year. I don't really do well with self tanners, though. Tan legs + pale everything else isn't a good look for anyone.

I got the Sun Labs and it's awesome!
