Last summer I was on this crazy hunt for affordable hair pins with actual gems in them. I wanted something set in sterling silver. I searched and the only ones I could find that had actual, larger, genuine gems were from one etsy seller, who makes jewelry and costumes for role playing. So the hair pins are kind of "loud" style-wise, but they are set in sterling, handmade, and though the gems are pretty cheap (huge windows, etc), they are "real": garnet, citrine, and blue topaz.

I think these are fun so I thought I'd share. I have pretty long hair that is actually quite nice looking when down, but I never ever wear it down, so it's kind of fun to stick these in a bun for a little dressed up feeling, even though I wear them with my super casual clothes.

I actually purchased two sets of three, but one of the garnet/citrine combos has a loose gem so it's not pictured. The third blue topaz pin is a trillion, you can see it peeking out of my hair (just snapped these pics, it was a bit difficult). For both sets I think I paid a total of around $120, the garnet/citrine set was around $75 and the topaz $50, I believe, I'd have to go back and look to be certain.

If anyone knows of a place to buy more of something similar - and by similar I mean anything at all vaguely fitting the description "genuine gem hair pin in sterling silver", please let me know. I think these are so fun and I'd like to pick up more in different styles if I could find some. I just like the idea of having a precious metal and actual gems in my hair, lol.

I wish I still had long hair! Those are really fun -- you're creative even to have thought of them. Very neat!

Thank you so much, JewelFreak! I actually felt kind of silly posting about them, it feels like a very "young" thing to buy and wear, and I think maybe I should be more mature by now (I'm turning 33 soon)...but then I thought, where else could I show these and maybe find someone who gets why I like them? Plus I do hope that if anyone knows where to find something similar, that they will post it.

I love jewelry so much that I thought my hair needed some too, lol!! I love my long hair, it's my one physical vanity, it's the only thing about me that I think is actually really nice. I cut it super short when I was 25, after my first son was born, kept it short for awhile, but I'm enjoying having it long for as long as I can now. I'll cut it short again when this style gets too young for me, but for now I love it long, no plans to cut it anytime soon. And I love putting my hair jewels in it and feeling like a princess :)

I think it shouldn't be too hard to request these from someone like danielm. They look like silver wire welded with a setting so maybe put a pendant setting with the hair pin wire?

Yes, it's just silver wire with a (basket?) setting. I think it looks pretty simple to make also but then I don't make jewelry ;). I have actually asked two of the jewelers I buy from frequently about making something similar, but neither seemed to want to do it, they were both kind of dismissive about it, so I dropped the idea for awhile. It's not something I want to spend a lot on, but maybe I will ask DanielM - I've never had him do anything for me before, but I've read many many good things over here about him. Thanks for the idea! I would like to see one of these with maybe a nice large moonstone.

I like those!

I've wanted a jeweled barrette for a while but I wouldn't do pins... they never stay in my hair and I feel bad whenever I lose anything more than the most basic bobby pin.

thanks for sharing!! I also have been hunting for jeweled hair accessories with very little success. I've run across pictures of jeweled Victorian hairpins, and I have made some jeweled hairsticks in the past, but haven't really been able to find jeweled hair clips. My hair is much too fine to be able to use the pins like yours- they'd never stay in. If you have success finding more, please share!!

I did happen to run across this diamond pave headband on Fred Leighton's site earlier today if anyone feels the need :naughty:

I have to be kind of careful with these, they aren't intended to actually hold hair in place like bobby pins do. They're just decorative, as in, get your hair in place and then gently put them in. I think they're fairly sturdy though. I've had them for almost a year and worn them quite a lot overall, and 5 out of 6 of them are fine. But I did have one gem pop out of a setting. I didn't lose it, just need to see if I can get a garnet reset on it (it's not pictured).

Wow, that is beautiful!!

I really have searched, and the selection for this type of thing is slim. I think it could be a great idea for a niche etsy store, but since I don't know how to make jewelry, I won't be starting such a store myself. I really wish someone would, though. It would be great to be able to find jeweled hair sticks, hair pins, and barrettes, all with genuine gems but still affordable, don't you think?

I mean I know there are a TON of decorative hair pins out there - but pins with genuine gems set in sterling - those are hard to find.

The photos of the one in your hair are magnificent! Your hair is such a pretty shade of chestnut brown that the stone really glows in your hair! I am also very impressed as it looks like you managed to take those pictures yourself, with your hands raised over your head and behind you?!! :o

LOL!! Yes, that's what I meant in my original post about the pics being hard to take!! That's exactly how I took them, just as you described.

Thanks so much for the nice compliments :) I usually wear two or three at a time, but I just stuck in one this morning - I didn't know if I could stretch my arms back far enough to show any more than one in my hair, what with that particular style of taking pics. The topaz show up better in my hair since they're so bright and blue.

I guess I clearly had too much time on my hands today, didn't I? The kids are home for Spring Break right now, and my husband was at work - so the kids and I had a lazy day around the house. I had plenty of time for hanging out on these boards and taking pics at odd angles. ;)

Whippersnapper!

I love your hair pins. I've been toying with the idea of a diamond hair clip. :Up_to_something:

Ooh, a diamond hair clip - I like the sound of that!

Very pretty.

Oh, I LOVE these. What a clever idea! I wonder if it would make it more feasible to hold hair if you attached the jewels to one of the sturdier wood or plastic hair forks ....

I would think so, I'd love to find something like that. I need to start looking around again, see what I can find...
