Just a Quick Question About Ebay Setting Sellers . . .

So I am finally thinking of springing for a setting by beyondjewelry3, and have asked for a price with full cut diamonds (they are listed as VS, G but I want them to understand that I want good stones), yellow gold, different head size and different ring size. All the extras added $40. Fine.

Now they just want to send me a Paypal invoice, without doing an auction, a listing, or anything. Is this how it usually goes?

Ebay is so emphatic about not going outside the ebay system, that it worries me a little. But all correspondence has been through ebay messages, so there is that record.

I know a lot of PSer's have purchased from this group of sellers, so I thought I'd double-check.

Thank you in advance :wavey:

I've purchased rings outside of ebay from beyondjewelry3 and other similar ebay setting sellers (Lanbo, diamondmounts, jewe2004, LOGR, etc. . . ), and never had a problem with getting my ring. The most important thing is that they understand your measurements properly, and any other customizations. Have them send it in an invoice in writing.

Thank you, TL!

That's a great tip, I had them write out the changes on the invoice. I think that should make things clear. Cross your fingers!

You're such a great resource! :appl:

I have purchased a few LOGR settings on eBay and have done all 3 of them through Paypal only. They would give me a quote and I would send a best offer of a lower amount and they said they would accept if we did a Paypal only transaction. This way they avoid eBay fees and can pass some of that savings to the customer. I even had to return one of the settings and was able to do so with no problems.

Sigh . . .

Well, I ordered a setting that needed to be made to fit a 7.5 RB, from beyondjewelry3. I'm pretty sure they sent me the standard 8.5mm setting, because my stone falls right through. I think they just forgot to customize it.

It is very sparkly, the band is pretty thin, though, probably because they sized it from a 6.5 ring size to a 7. Diamonds are good, I ordered an upgrade to those.

So, I do think a standard, non-customized setting is good, but like others have said, customizing might just be too much to ask.

I received it DHL, so I'm supposing that is the best way to return. Does anyone have any suggestions/tips for returning?

I took it to a jeweler, who said nothing could be done without major work. While I was there I looked at a very similar setting. He wanted $4500.00 for it!

I think my $300 setting is a pretty darn good deal! :appl:

No experience for you, iLander, but Yow! on pricing. Kind of makes you sit up, doesn't it!?

If they haven't customised it then you should send it back for a full refund or replacement. Do you like the ring? If so, then go for the replacement rather than a refund.

They may ask you not to put diamond ring on the shipping details or put the full value - items do go missing and having those on the package make it a potential target for thieves. I've always followed their instructions and haven't had any problems in doing so.

iLander,
So sorry about the bad experience. Did you get confirmation of the customizations in the invoice to you? If so, he should recreate it for no extra charge, and be responsible for the return shipping. Just curious, which setting was it that you obtained, if you don't mind showing us?

Hi TL!

I don't mind, it was this one, but I got it for $300, not $360:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Round-8-5mm-14kt-WG-Gold-0-43Ct-Diamond-Semi-Mount-Ring-/270875064318?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f116977fe#ht_3867wt_822

I asked for it as a 7.5mm, but I think they just sent the standard 8.5, since the stone fell right through the opening. There was no way to adjust anything, and when I took it to a jeweler, he said that he would have to build an inner circle to hold the stone. He actually said it would need a 9-10mm stone, but I think he was a little off there.

As for a critique of the setting, the diamonds were VERY tiny, I'm not sure they were even 1 pointers, but they were all white and sparkly. If I were designing a setting this delicate, I think I would use a smaller center stone, it looks a little unbalanced with the tiny diamonds. I got it in yellow gold, and the diamonds still looked pretty white. If it were in white gold, I think it would have been even prettier. For my own future reference, I think I'll try to find a setting with slightly bigger diamonds, a 7.5 mm (pale yellow mali garnet, looks like a fabulous yellow diamond, from Litnon ;)) ) stone is kind of hefty. Any suggestions?

I know, right?

I'm pretty sure that particular jeweler has given up on ever selling me anything, because I always ask pointed questions about beryllium and lead-glass filling on his rubies. He claims that he doesn't have any stones like that, but I can tell he's not really sure. ;)

Thanks, LD, I followed their instructions to the letter and sent it back. They did offer to set my stone for free if I send it to them, but that just seemed a bit scary to me. The setting is covered under ebay and paypal, but not the stone.

You know how HARD it is to find a good stone!

Which settings did you return, and what did you think of them in RL? If you don't mind . . .

Sorry you had a not so favourable experience. I ordered both thru eBay and outside of eBay, and had good experiences both way. Hope your situation resolves positively!

Well, thank you. I hope so too.

If I was ordering a non-custom setting, I think it would have been fine. Crossing my fingers that it gets there. . .

Wow, it looks like their prices went up again. Not too long ago, for $300, I could get a more diamond encrusted setting with 1 pointers, or larger. That setting is very lightweight in gold and diamond work, but in this day and age, I suppose $300 isn't that much to pay. It makes me sad because have a HEAVY platinum (with 18K accents) diamond setting that I'm trying to unload, and pawn shops only want to give me $300 (no way!!), so I'm keeping it. LOGR prices are even higher and through the roof. I no longer buy anything from him, and haven't in over a year. When comparing LOGR prices to the other ebay sellers, I think he's smoking something. My jeweler would charge similar prices to LOGR for his custom work, but he's in America and does the work himself. Try looking for second hand settings too, which might be more cost effective.

Well, put that puppy on DB and sell it on the preloved PS thread! :wavey: I'm sure you can get a decent price, we are full up on folks that need settings!

What other ebay sellers have better prices, other than the ones mentioned in this thread already? I am looking for some settings and ebay is a mess to wade through without guidance.

LOGR seems the highest, but all the remaining Chinese manufactuers on ebay seem to have similar pricing.

I really can't get more than $300 for it on DB, maybe $400 tops, but I just rather keep it because I think it's a nice setting and I thought I could at least get more at a pawn shop than on DB. DB is a great place to sell precision cut gems, and GIA certified diamonds, but not mounts so much (unless they are designer mounts). At least that's been my experience.

Well... now we are all curious about the setting so put it on there! it's free so you don't have anything to lose to try =)
Yes I know, I took the that set of 2 diamond and sapphire WG bands to the pawn shop (the one on the TV show in Vages) when I was there and they offered me like $80 for the pair... I was in some serious shock...

I believe it, I just think they try to give good prices to people that appear on the show in order to chalk up more business for themselves.

Anyways, that being said, to the OP, check out DB from time to time because people do sell settings at a great discount. I know pawn shops may sometimes have good deals on settings too because Freke had mentioned it, although I never bought a setting from a pawn shop.
